  • Arguably the best class of loco ever to run in great britain and a wonderful restoration---they did not suffer from Gesleys A4 inside big end weakness----the only fault--they should have had American style automatic stokers----on test 2 firemen could not stoke that firebox to its full capacity!

  • I shall be working maintaing this engine amd running it on the mainline this year! She is being painted black soon.

  • thought her mainline boiler certificate had run out?

  • @bessnbonnie The inspector came around about a month ago we have a years extension.

  • That's a shame, she looks so beautiful with her red livery.

  • @HoorayforOliver She will more than likely look just as good :) happy new year as well

  • I remember an article in one of the railway comics about 1990, when 71000 was in its first season on the N Wales coast, saying how the Crewe North men, who remembered it from before, were very impressed with it now. The enginemen's impressions were that it was stronger than a 47, especially on the climb out of Holyhead. I know some drivers would disagree, but I think, in general, a class 8 Pacific will outperform a "Duff". I think a 47 would find it hard to match some steam climbs to Ais Gill

  • @leeky7 On Oct 10th '09, while climbing Shap with 13 coaches & an idle 47, Duchess of Sutherland's DBHP peaked at over 2700. Not only is that over 600 DBHP more than a 47/57, but it is marginally more than an all out Deltic!

Although several modern class 5 freight diesels surpasses a deltic in tractive effort, the deltic is still in dbhp terms the most powerful diesel electric class ever to have run in Britain, meaning that the Duke & Duchess are more powerful than any UK diesel in rail hp!

  • the smell the noise the experience only word for it mind blowing

  • Like the "Storm Chasers" on the road .

    Warra Beast !

  • STEAM!

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Is that on an incline.....the old girl seems to be making heavy weather of it......"semis" used to pull 14 coaches regularly in the old days....

  • Yes - it's a very nasty 1 in 75, right off the end of the platform! In fact, this is a very good confident start indeed, especially with the "dead weight" hanging on the back...or shouldn't I have said that?!

  • Ah, yes....the dreaded 'tail-end-charlie'.....the old girl wasn't doing so bad, after all, then.... I was standing at the side of City of Stoke on Trent in Birmingham New Street (many moons ago) when her safety valves popped. Wasn't expecting it and nearly had a heart attack. And then the driver thought it would be a good idea to give a blast on the whistle......Blood pressure must have gone through the roof at that point!!! lol! What machines........

  • Yeah....is that supposed to be "insurance" or wot....I know which machine would be more likely to break down! lol!

    I

  • This vid is great. This is one of Stanier's finest class of engines if not the finest class.

47s have been pulled from some recent rail tours because of their unreliability. One tour company won't run them now.

  • Yeah, the old girl is pulling with "one hand tied behind her back"......I think the "Duff" would be more likely to break down than she would!" Sir Bill knew how to build engines!!!

  • Great to see 47798 back at Holyhead after a (very) lengthy absence!

6233 on top form as ever too; guess we'd better enjoy it while we still can eh?

    5*

  • Agree, and ....agree! yes love 47798 as I love all 47s, and 6233 definately did her bit too today, wonderful to see this here, never seen a steam train at Holyhead til today :-)
