Ive been wanting to see a video (or even still photo series) of then and nows of evanston. I remember this drivers ed video they showed at ETHS had you driving around evanston/skokie in like the 60s it looked like. Maybe Ill put an announcement in the review or the roundtable and see if i can get people to send me photos or movies of e-town back in the day, and ill make a movie...stay tuned. Cities should document themselves photographically every 10 years or so, that would be so cool to see.
Evanston's downtown has changed for the better I suppose. Am glad to see the removal of the world's biggest garage sale parking lot. I'd always thought it wierd to see a big garage in a downtwon central location. It's wierd that this lady would tour Evanston in a cop car. I have zero fond memories of Evanston's cops.
Thanks for the video!!!! It's was great to see Evanston again. I'm a little sad that it has change so much. I went to Miller school, St. Mary's and E.T.H.S Class of 1986. Does anyone remember Nichols night gym? Fun!! How I miss Evanston. Well thanks again and Hello to all the Class of 1986 and for everyone that remembers Evanston. Eavnston is NO.1!!!
Yep. There was a shooting in Beardsley in 1996. The handgun was in some dude's bookbag when it went off; the bullet struck someone in the back but he/she was OK. This video was kind of fun though it definitely had a north-side perspective. How about a little tour of the south and west ends? Certainly took me back, though. The Economous' house was for sale? At $1 million, it's probably still on the market. How's Tom? He was my soccer coach. --JC (ETHS '96)
OK OK. I found the south side video, too. Cool. The whole city seems even more upscale than it was 10-20 years ago. I've only been back once in the last decade. Not nearly upscale enough now...that's for sure.
Actually there was a shooting much more recent than 1984. My boy julius shot someone in school in like 95 or 96 in beardsley cafeteria. not that thats a good thing but it is what it is. Class of 1997 JJ
Just to let you know the shooting that occured the day before you came to E.T.H.S. was not a gang shooting, Shannon (the boy who was shot) was not in a gang and shot for something even more ridiculous than gangs. I knew both of the kids involved, they were both in my grade, and i hate just because it was two african-american kids everyone thinks it is gang related
I thought this video was very entertaining. I'm a 5th generation Evanstonian and I'm also a co-worker of Ofc. Benoit and police officer in Evanston. It saddens me sometimes to see how Evanston has changed (I hate the condos). The old feel of a giving city is fading or is being masked my big city life. I'm still VERY proud this is where I'm from and you did a great job with the quick overview of a beautiful place. Officer. T. Wilson EPD-Graduate of Dewey, Haven and ETHS c/o 96.
I was born and raised in Evanston and graduated from ETHS in 1967. I have only been back to Evanston twice in the 90's. It was like the movie Back to the Future. So much had changed but so much was the same.
I left in 1965 (screaming - an 11 year old kid at Orrington PS). My father quit Seabury Western across from Northwestern) to go to Canada. My brother was at Haven, my two sisters were at ETHS. I really appreciate the camera work and selections. I remember Lighthouse Beach and Northwestern. We used to go the the Varsity and Valencia theatres. We swam at Patten pool. We lived close to frat houses. Noyes Street was the closest store. I have to go back. Thanks for the tour.
aw this is so cool! i got to eths now im a freshman. i love it there! and yea some people still have those beers w tinfoyl but thats done across the street not on the campus. hahaha cool video!
I went to ETHS in the early 70s. Once I snuck out of gym class with a couple of other girls and we roller skated down the hall! I had a great time in HS. On the other hand, I can't believe how much downtown has changed. Nothing stays the same, does it?
Thanks for posting this. I grew up in Evanston, however we moved to Utah when I was 15. I went to Haven, and one year at ETHS. It was cool to see a lot of those landmarks. I went back in 2000 and it was like going back in time. Just about everything was the same. I wonder if Hot Dog Island is still there in 2008 at the top of Central Street? c-ya...
Yes, it's still there, unchanged. I had a wonderful BBQ sandwich there just a couple of weeks ago. Also, Dave's Italian Kitchen is still around, they just moved around the corner, currently located on Chicago Avenue, just south of Church St. The Pine Yard has also re-located, and now sits at the corner of Davis and Oak.
Thanks for the fun video. You think things have changed from the 80's...how about a class of 76er missing Wieboldts, Chandlers, and Marshall fields which seemed like eternal landmarks back then, plus Baskins with the glass wall of live monkeys...in a fine clothing store! You 80's folks don't remember this, all the beers nothwithstanding. But it looks like Gigios Pizzia is still there.
I'm a junior now at ETHS---it's my first year at the school. And I do have VERY MIXED feelings about it. Academically, it's a mile better than the school I previously attended in Fox Lake, IL, but honestly, it's very cold and detached in many ways. Who was the choir director when you were in school? I'm not so pleased with the current one, as I'm in the choir. Great video though!!!
Pine Yard and Dave's are still there, they just moved a few blocks away. The two houses you filmed on Orrington are now owned by the Graham and Gaynor families. Fountain Square has been a haven for bums since the late 90's and no more P.M. Club. Additionally there has been some form of gang violence in front of the school every year since the late 90's
The Dave's and Pineyard issue already came up- they moved- I was referring to where they WERE- the whole building was leveled. I don't know the Graham's or Gaynor's- again- I was referring to who DID live there when we were in highschool. See South Evanston 20 Years Later for an update on PM Club...and gang violence- yes- but a shooting where bullets penetrated bodies causing major harm? Not every year. Maybe more than once since 1984- but not every year.
LOVED the original - and now the South Evanston edition. Sent to many Kits who applaud your efforts! Gigio's, Y dances, 'BMX hot mixes... great memories! Thanks, Jen!
I'm a sophmore at ETHS now and this video shows exactly how life in Evanston is: from (Merritt) saying that everybodys had their 1st beer at lighthouse beach to security guards at ETHS saying in a drawl "Ya got a pass?" Thank you for this very well done video.
This would have been better if you would have shown the west end and how it has changed. Also your racist comment about needing a police escort to walk infront of the school just shows how seperated the northshore population is from the strife and poverty that exsists 10 steps from where they send there kids to school. I guess its cool for kids to go to school, but YOU should have a police escort hu? E-TOWN RUN IT!!!!
racist? someone was KILLED the day before we shot this video in front of the school- and i mention being glad i had a cop with me- and you call me racist?
Racist is a little much. The kid was actually shot a half a block down (north of Church st) and in the alley. Not in front of the school. Close... but not that close. I'm still exited about your video!!! :)
The songs from this video really brought me back (even more than the video). GREAT JOB. Maybe "Part III" of this video series should a "Where are they now" montague of all the Wildkits from the late 80's who never left Evanston. By the way, can someone tell me where the "Evanston bloggers" do their blogging. I would love to read about the Kits from my generation.
Wow this seriously brings me back. How did that much time go by? You guys look great. I will be watching for part two. Hey, what's the scoop on Chute girls? Alison Buehler '88
Great stuff! As a former South Sider, I'm already looking forward to seeing the new video. There might be more new condo buildings (but not units!)south of Dempster or so. I have vivid memories of the Y dances. Oh, and Nichols does lead Haven in former juvenile deliquents, no question about it!
Phifer sent me a message via MySpace to go and watch the video you made-I couldn't believe what I was watching! The last time I was in Evanston was in the winter of '95 and not much had really changed-but now....I have one question since I grew up in Roger's Park and lived in south Evanston for most of my high school years-is the P.M. Club still in existence? And where are all the skaters?Bums have taken over Fountain Square? That's sad....
Incedible job on the video! This brought back some seriously funny memories. Too bad you couldn't get footage of Mike B's basement! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and sharing stories. I've sent this on to other Evanstonians. The only songs you were missing were "Pop Goes My Love" and "Let the Music Play"!
Whoa...that brought me back. Matt Bass just sent me this, and he wants the soundtrack. And I'd like a Popeye pizza. Thanks for the tour of my old hood. Matt Price
you're right- I meant to say "where they used to be" is gone- I am a regular to both spots in their "newer" locations- but I should have been more specific..
