  • that burst off the first turn will never be duplicated...amazing...and led the rest of the way and was never really seriously challenged (as could be determined by the immense whipping Sham was getting from Pincay while Turcotte just hand-rode Big Red)..wow

  • Excellent tributes to the greatest.

  • Sorry now I see it was paris Kentucky....the Best I have never forgotten the majesty of him and Turcotte and finally Maple...however guys remember...even though this brings me to tears many years later....ALL the Canadian US British Italian human soldiers in Afghanastan and who knows where else.. I guess what Secretariat and Seabiscuit and Northern Dancer ETC did for all of us was to band together in spirit as humans with innocent animals wo taught US a lesson JR

  • I was at Woodbine Toronto Canada Oct 73....Thnks for the info I did not know he was buried in Paris...Why...I thought it would have been vermont janice....I was 15 and will never forget Thnks

  • He will always be my hero. As a 10 year old girl in the grandstands of the Belmont to visiting his grave in Paris, ky 20 year later. There will never be another one like him.

  • Nice video. What's frustrating was the teletimer malfunction, DRF clocked as a record breaker but Preakness failed to acknowledged the clockers timing. Otherwise, SEC's feat of setting the record in each triple crown event in the same year speaks volume for the daunting achievement!

  • @ALYSHEBANDTHEBID I realize your comment is 2 years old with respect to Slew. However, you are completely unable to qualify your statement that Slew is the best TC winner other than that he is your personal favorite. There is no logical comparison with respect to their TC's.

  • Saw the movie today, its good. Its more about the people than the horse tho.I hope it does well at the box office, like Seabiscuit did.

  • Great work!!! Keep it coming. I love the Conan theme, its very fitting!!

  • As far as the belmont you'd have to have a ferrari racing SEC to be any competition. Slew, affirmed, Bid, Dr. Fager, War admiral, seabiscuit, and MOW would have had not chance against SEC in the belmont. He was going at a muderous pace on that day!!!!

  • Also no way Slew beats SEC! Slew always had the lead and no one was able to track him down at the end, some horses almost did but not quite. It was like in the KD when "chucky green" held the lead for most of the way impressively BTW until SEC and SHAM devoured him down the stretch. So I see Slew ahead in the KD and the PK but caught in the end.

  • Its almost like SEC heard anderson say "and secretariat is last" and SEC was like " ohh yeah watch this sucker". SEC must of had a 1000shot of nitrous.

  • He had to scare the crap out of those other horses when he blew by them. Just think what his time would have been if he had not had to take to the oustside to get by them. Does anyone think MOW, Citation, Slew or the Bid could have made a swift move like Secretariat did here. I will answer for them. Nope!(smile)

  • Yes, Sham was a great horse

but due to bad timing he had to run against a legend in the making.

    Any other year...

  • It is hard for the eyes and brain to compute the speed once he takes off. It reminds me of the Richard Pryor line-"Who you gonna believe-me or your lyin' eyes?"

  • Very nice, the Conan the Barbarian theme song!

  • Sham breaks the Derby record and comes in 2nd. He then breaks the Preakness record and comes in 2nd. He was a magnificent racehorse. Sure, we have had Affirmed/Alydar since then, who were great horses but they would have never been able to compete against these 2 in my opinion.

  • Does any one besides me, wonder what the other horses must have thought when Secretariat blew past them. I wonder if they wondered if a rocket was loose on the track.

  • I think they were thinking "this is horseshit" "theres no way he is this fast"

  • Sham must really have gotten tired of always seeing that big red rear end in front of him. Sham was a marvel in and of himself. He just happened to come along when The King of Horses ruled.

  • Secretariat was rather shocking if you think about it. He made the rest of the field look like absolute Clowns!

  • A cruise to victory unhurried and unextended, beautiful to watch. A hero to me and all followers of the equine kind. This horse is equal to Michael Jordan imo and that is a huge compliment, but not undeserved.

  • At 1:41 sometimes I laugh... after they push his butt to get him in he turns around and looks around, just like a little kid... "Oh, we gonna do this again..?"

  • Yeah I noticed that my self, it's almost like he's warning us not to blink, or we'd miss his take off.

  • At :48 sec look at the hoard crossing the track, I assume that;s when the electronic clock was damaged. According to Raymond Woolf in his book near back, a drunken fan tossed a soda or beer can .

  • yeah, I noticed that myself. It seemed like he was warning us to keep our eyes open and not blink or we'd miss him.

  • I think I sent you a message by mistake. Sorry about that.

  • On this date March 30, 1970 secretariat was born.........Happy Birthday big red!

  • Man O' War was great, but he was handicapped by the decade in which he raced. I personally believe MOW is very overrated He would have been embarrassed by Secretariat and there is no doubt in my mind Sham would have beaten MOW more times than not. MOW is as overrated as Sham is underrated. Sham was a probable triple crown winner in any other year.

  • I agree with everything you said about MOW and Sham. You're right. When people compare Secretariat to ANY horse, it's unfair to the other horses. Sham was more equal to MOW. Secretariat was God's way of letting us humans see what perfection is...even if his supernatural creature wasn't a human. Secretariat was truly a miracle of nature....and the only one.

  • Awesome! Look at him aftr the race is finished, he looks like he wants more, almost as if this win was too easy. He may be dead now but is the eternal emporer of horse racing. No horse can match this supreme conquerer.

  • Like a speeding bullet.....

He never fails to take your breath away. Beautiful, wonderful, Sec. <3

  • Secretariat is still the greatest race horse in history and the world:-)

  • Man O' War was the second greatest race horse of all time. Only Man O' War could have given Secretartiat the race of his life. Secretariat only toyed with Sham. You can tell by the way he stayed way behind by several lengths and then overpowered him in a few seconds. In the Belmont, Secretariat decided not to wait...and you saw the results. Sham ended up dead last from exhaustion. He just wasn't physically in Secretariat or Man O' War's league. No other horses in the history of racing are.

  • The Preakness blew it - big time. Every racing fan knows it erred badly with the creditted time. Just changing the official time puts it's reputation at stake. Then CBS makes it look bad. Then the racing form shows it up on every anniversary date by publishing it's own time instead. And of course Secretariat blows the clocker out of the water 3 weeks later with the greatest race ever run by a horse. What a legacy for the Preakness and its bad clock on the most important date in its history.

  • Very well said !! 2813uf. Look at his stride at end of race starting at 5:49.... Nack describes how he didn't climb w/front legs, just reaches and folds the track under him in that beautiful fluid easy motion, that body, that form. I only read a couple of yrs ago that in 1999 10 yrs after he was gone, the MD Racing Commission finally officially changed the time to 1:53 2/5, as well it should have.

  • To state Sham was possibly the second best horse of all time is a bit far fetched but a fantastic capturing of Secretariats greatness in this clip none the less. A very good job indeed Kierkegaard73.

  • My opinion, with respect to other feats in sports, is that you must look at the KD, PS AND the Belmont:for the horse to have run the first 2 legs in record time and THEN to do what he did in the Belmont is unfathomable. Sham was ,also, a large-hearted horse,I have heard 18 pounds.Sham ran phenomenal times in the KD and PS..you see what that does to even a great racer in that Sham was spent by the time the Belmont came. Again, for Sec to do what he did after the KD and PS is otherworldly!!!

  • let me repeat. I think secretariat's win at the belmont is the greatest sports feat of all-time in America with one possible exception: Wilt scoring 100 points in a game. These 2 feats are of the kind that you think they are of a species different from that which they were competing against!

  • I disagree. Wilt was assisted by having his team members pass him the ball. Sorry. No one helped Secretariat set his records. He did it all on his own.

  • Okay, sure, infact; while I am adopting your eloquently stated wisdom, I think I will take it a step further and ask you what you would rather use as a theme. I noticed you like Devo, maybe "Whip It" would be more appropriate???

  • there you go...

  • @Kierkegaard73 that wouldn't make much sense though..seeing as Ron rarely used his..lmao Great video editing, music does this race justice.

  • secretariat was the hero everybody needed and he proved to be that hero,If anyone could tell me people had cried because a horse has won a race would i believe it?yes if it is secretariat.

Seattle slew was true horse lovers horse where we buy a cheap horse and hope he will win many races.Slew did the fairy tale story that we could only read in the books.

There is no comparison as we cannot see pegasus in every horse that raced on the track.

Both were great and will always be that way.

  • Secretaiat will be always something special! Not only that he has won these races, but he did it with grace and style! He had charisma and a great personality! He was a beautiful animal and I hope he will be never forgotten!

  • I say that on June 9th 1973, there was no horse in the entire history of the planet that could have beat Secretariat.

  • 1st things first: "never reply about S.Slew" What's there to reply about? I think Slew was one of the all-time great and love watching his races. What is there to reply about? Do I think he was as good as Sec? No, but that doesn't take anything away from Slew. This comment of yours is simply a smokescreen to deflect away from the fact that I mentioned previously: You've simply ignored the fact that bon and I have responded to your claims with ironclad factual rebuttal.

  • Before you change the subject like a little kid, start with admitting those previous claims you made were wrong with no foundation in fact. Absent that, immaturity and stupidity will have been revealed as the driving forces behind your comments, whereas bon and I have merely responded with absolutely direct factual rebuttal. It's always been apparent that you have a corn cobb up your ass about Sec, blasting him any chance you get. For what purpose, building up Slew or Bid? As if they needed it?

  • He's a Canadian, maybe he resents fact that in winning KD Sec broke Northern Dancer's(I love him there's a wonderful video here on him) 2:00 min mark. Or maybe bec he had the audacity to cross the border into Canada himself in his last race and when he made his move(w/NEW jockey!!)he left the field behind in 2:41+ in 30 deg temp, headwind and rainy/flurries.

  • Certainly that's a possibility, but Spectacular Bid and Seattle Slew, both great horses, weren't Canadian yet he constantly blasts Sec to build up his case for those horses. In fact, Sec had Canadian connections. His trainer and his jockey were both Canadian, which means he had stronger Canadian connections than Bid, Slew, or Alysheba, yet he still persists with his childish antics. Definitely a mystery.

  • Oh yes, and Turcotte is fm Grand Falls, NB, my paternal grandmother was too, came down into Maine to wait tables in lumber camps as a 17 yr old girl. Yes, a mystery, I was just putting bit of a twist on this argument. Is there another thoroughbred that a disturbing number of people want/need to discredit?

  • Slew was a great champion, an all-time Hall-of-Famer. You say that "Sec was stretched" when he raced? He was not stretched in any on his TC races save for 2 lashes at the top of the stretch in the KD; he simply ran on his own, setting records in the process. Running 21 races in 72-73 constitutes more races than Slew ran in his entire career, and he wasn't "lightly raced", so how can you say that about Sec? The whole thing about the fragile bones is utterly ridiculous, not worth the trouble.

  • this aggressive hostile remark is so offensive almost as if he hopes he wld have broken down. Sec had "legs like iron" Seth Hancock, Claiborne. S was NOT lightly raced. He needed 5/8 "zingers" for edge BEFORE a race due to size to pump up big heart. Line on pedigreequery shows Phalaris born 1905. IT ALSO SHOWS FAIR PLAY(SIRE OF MAN O'WAR) AS SIRE OF DISPLAY WHO SIRED DISCOVERY WHO SIRED MISS DISCO BRED TO NASRULLAH SIRE OF BOLD RULER WHO SIRED SECRETARIAT. Aly has not ONE Sec video favorite.

  • First off, Sec raced 21 times in 16 months, a healthy amount of races for 2 years. That's more than Slew's entire career, and I don't think Slew was "lightly raced". Also, Sec was not "stretched", as this guy is implying by saying Slew wasn't; he wasn't asked for anything in the TC races save for 2 lashes at the head of the stretch in the KD. As for the fragile phalaris bones, that is not even worth a response because it's so utterly ridiculous. He's got an ax to grind, and he's grinding it.

  • thanks.. yuh, I know that, it's my thin skin I guess. You know, I hope the Sec movie, writer Mike Rich (The Rookie, Finding Forrester) producer Mark Ciardi (Miracle, Invincible)tells story of 3 W losses and how/why they happened the whole human error story.I hope it gets at S's originality, intelligence e.g. 3 TC performances. Rich says "I can reference any fraction, any workout and he(Nack who will help develop script).. he's like a human internet."

  • "he went back to galloping along, i just kept thinking belmont" turcotte, makes ya think another 1/4 mile he might have fell asleep and fallen off big red. I see why people wreck limos......lol

  • Fantastic video! best line of all ive heard of this animal "turcotte has his whip put away, cause secretariat has em put away" That will resonate forever with me...........

  • The athletic power of one of sports' greatest heroes, and the descriptive power of the man who got me into PA announcing, one of the top racecallers and public address announcers ever, Charles David (Chic) Anderson.

(How I still miss the man, 29 years and five days after he left us.)

  • I am amazed at anyone talking negative about secretariat, can you not enjoy a horse race for what it is. geez , it only last 2 minutes and you get 30 minutes of why he is no good, man of war this , citation this , he is secretariat and he moved like a tremendous machine and that distinction was made becuase television brought big red to our living rooms and gave the public something to watch on a saturday afternoon that they will never see again. Thanks for posting a quality video again

  • I have always been more impressed with this race than the 31-lenght Belmont Stakes. It was unreal for Turcotte to make that brush so early in the race, and on the turn no less....Absolutely eye-catching!!!!

  • Perfect video!

    Thanks!

  • What's your problem? There were reasons for Sec's losses, just as the reason that Slew lost his first race after the TC was because they never should've shipped him west, and they never should've raced him so soon after the TC. You've got a grudge against Sec. What gives?

  • Excellent video and text.

    Thank you Sir!

  • WOW wat is dis about????

  • Outstanding! Great music and editing.

  • perfection!!!

  • Hi Kierke!Just dropping back by to watch the video!

    Great background music!

    Jazzy

  • Poor Sham...In any other year, he would have won the Derby, and who knows.....poured his heart out in three races, unsound for the last race, but he gave his all...no one remembers the also rans...

  • GenuineRisk check out the description in my eternity video ---> click the link in there. That link will take you to a version of that with a section on Sham

  • I enjoy watching your videos!Thanks Kierkegaard73!

  • In anyother year...Sham would have been a triple crown winner..Secretariat broke Sham that day...and the owner/trainer made him, a sick, tired horse run back in the Belmont...he gave his all...

  • WONDERFUL video. Thank you for the great work. I remember seeing this race on TV years ago and watching Secretariat's easy run. What a great horse! You did a terrific job. Loved it.

  • Look at that stride at the end... as Nack describes, he doesn't climb at all.. just reaches out smoothly and low and folds the track under him, with the propulsive power of those big hind quarters.

  • Very enjoyable. Nice touch with "Secretariat has come". Rousing music to "The Run" and terrific musical segues into "The Pass and go" and "Victory".

All in all, excellent work. 5 emphatic stars!

Thanks very much for posting this.

  • Spectacular! Superb! Incredible! 'And Secretariat is moving fast...' Moving Fast? He like passed up all of those horses within seconds! It was incredible! Great Job!!!

  • The slow motion of that stride, finally caught Lucien patting his nose after race, sweet, notice huge mob walking across track, no wonder elec timer was damaged, don't understand why allowed to cross THERE. Very well put together w/music !

  • Wonderful. 5 stars! I look forward to your Belmont video.
