It is just as fine for someone to defend themself against a straight assailant as it would be for them to defend themself against a gay assailant. The sexual orientation, race, or whatever of the people involved are irrelevant to the action itself, and thus should be treated as such.

Regarding civil rights, a number of you have forgotten what is included under civil rights - Civil rights include the individual rights such as the freedoms of thought and conscience, speech and expression, religion, the press, and movement. It is clear that the gay community wishes to use "hate crimes" legislation to make it a "crime" when people merely speak out against homosexuality and lesbianism by pointing out how it goes against the design of the body. This violates civil rights.

Oh shut up. Prop 8 was to protect marriage because marriage is only between a MAN and a WOMAN, plus marriage is not a right it is a gift only given to 1 MAN and 1WOMAN. I do think gays deserve the same rights as everybody else but as i stated before marriage is not a right.

Actually... the U.S. Supreme Court does have say over what religions try to do to other people. Especially if those people are not part of that religion.
One may believe what one wishes and speak it. But to enforce that belief on another person's personal life would likely violate Constitutionally protected inalienable rights.
