This must be one of the best dialogues in the history of the moving picture. John McClane must do something so immoral and dangarous, only to save New York City from being bombed and Zeus Carver trying to prevent Harlem from being flooded with "a thousand white cops, all of 'em with itchy trigger fingers" ... I must have seen the scene a hundred times... I still enjoy looking at it.
I love the fact that he starts complaining he has a bad headache even though it obviously just pisses those guys off more. There's a great piece of editing work with the knife throw - it's actually two different shots, closely matched and composited together using fast pans to smooth the transition. Watch the DVD/Bluray and play it slowly frame by frame to see what I mean.
Well I admire the honesty. It's not clear in what you said, that it's a question of courage for you. Perhaps you could save others if you wanted, but you simply don't value life that way. It poses an interesting question though : when the chips are down, when it comes to the crunch, when push comes to shove, how many of us are cowards?
American cinema would have us believe the world is populated with selfless civilians. I'd love to think that most of us have the moral integrity to sacrifice ourselves for others, but I couldn't honestly say I'd have the guts at the critical moment to save a stranger.
An even more worrying question is how many people would be able to take a life to save themselves. I imagine with America's pro-gun culture they may find that a more comfortable proposition than many other societies.
Perhaps love in parenthood or even in a partnership would change that equation - where it becomes more likely to genuinely value another life over your own, but I'm not convinced that regular people are on the whole, particularly courageous.
In any case, within the context of the film, Zeus is not saving McClane for McClane's sake, but because he wants to prevent a violent overreaction from the police. So he may have a sense of neighbourhood community as well as self preservation.
John McClane going to that place with his sign- I would have refused. No way would I go to Harlem with a sign stating "I hate *&^%$#" I would refuse and tell the police department to fuck off. Im not a coward- I love myself more than I love anyone else- I believe the term is narcissistic. I do not make sacrifices for anyone other than myself or my children.
