What he's doing is a massive skid at 2:55. The bike is definitely fixed. It's a basic building block of fixie riding to lock your leg muscles against the pedals' rotation, and by doing so, to skid. It might appear that they're just going into fancy positions while coasting, but it's in fact much harder- they have to physically stop the wheel's rotation to skid all while moving around the bike's frame.

I rode my buddy's fixie a while back and it got me hooked. I usually ride a cheap single speed roadbike, but my current project is building a decent fixie. I don't even care who says they're hipster bikes, they're a lot of fun.

@yamahonkawazuki I assume you're talking about tricks like the one that occurs at 1:16. if you look carefully you can see that when he stops pedalling, the back wheel stops spinning as well. he just has his weight over the front wheel so he's able to skid the rear tire without slowing down to much.

yeah man whats up wit the skidding so what you did a 20 ft skid your on a tall bike w/skinny tires. leverage an less drag than mtb or bmx. watch quicksilver the movie... that is some tricky shit over 25 yrs old and none did a skid. im building one for that reason gonna run the small gearing so i can bust bar spinning wheelies an the uni cycle move. im a freestyler of 28 yrs i can do alot of rolling tricks, i can ride a uni very well an when i get my track bike rolling i wont be skidding.

@xmotox925 It is actually quite hard to do. While I think the fad part of it is stupid, I used to think the same about fixed gears until I built one and tried one myself just out of pure curiosity. I found that they are actually quite cool to ride, I mean I like riding my mountain bike and road bike too, but its just another cool bike in the quiver for me..
