lwears. Who could argue with that. Anything by Anne Sofie is absolutely superb including this aria. If any two ladies are truly beautiful, sing always perfectly, possess sheer class and are just plain nice down to earth people, then they are Anne Sofie and Kiri. God bless these two wonderful creatures.
This is a sad aria: and in spite of what some people say, to me Kiri has always been expressive through her voice and her facial features, inhabiting her roles in a most un-self-conscious manner. On this Volpe Gala occasion in May, 2006, she was probably singing at the Met for the last time: at the end of the aria when she was looking sideways I can feel that she's remembering her career on that stage with a tinge of sad nostalgia. Who doesn't feel somewhat sad at retirement?
A lovely artist. She sounds in considerable distress, though, in the opening "Glück, das mir verblieb, rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb. Abend sinkt im Hagbist mir Licht und Tag. Bange pochet Herz an Herz. Hoffnung schwingt sich himmelwärts." Her top is almost as radiant as ever. If the date is correct, she's doing pretty good at 62.
I love Kiri. What is so amazing is that as she has gotten older, her voice has not lost its strength.

Whoever coached her on Korngold deserves a medal. Beautifully sung.

Lovely, though my favourite performance on youtube of this beautiful aria is by Anne Sofie von Otter.

@swanningaround I wonder whether they ever sang Rosenkavalier together - Kiri as Marschallin and Anne as Octavian. Has Mist Gelobt would be awesome!

@lewars1912 ... yes, me too. It's almost a sort of 'reverence' with von Otter
and very beautiful.
