By the way,Jennifer Warnes has been one of the most succesful singing voices in the history of the movies.Three songs from her music catalogue has received Academy Awards. It Goes Like It Goes from Norma Rae(1979),Up Where We Belong from An Oficcer And A Gentleman(1982) and I've Had The Time Of My Life from Dirty Dancing(1987).The last two also were #1 songs on Billboard Pop Charts. So that explains why Kermit The frog couldn't beat Jennifer Warnes.Kermit is a frog,Jenniffer is an awarded singer.

A memorable and beautiful song by Jennifer Warnes(one of her best) from one of the most powerful and brilliant performances by a leading actress in the history of cinema in the movie "Norma Rae".Both, song and role by a leading actress(Sally Field) in a movie received the Academy Awards back then in 1979.

@jordanthewizard It beat "Rainbow Connection" (which is a very sweet song) because it is a beautiful song perfectly matched to the dramatic content of an outstanding movie. It plays over the opening credits, setting the tone and lending a powerful impact to the visuals. Gives me goosebumps hearing it 30 years later...
Beth Nielsen Chapman sounds exactly like this. I wonder if she considers Jennifer Warnes as one of her musical inspirations. Beautiful song, singing and movie.
Gotta be the best original movie theme song ever ... perfect fit ... the film is a classic but wouldn't be the same without this haunting piece ... Jennifer Warnes at her best.
such a lovely song by a tremendous singer -- and the message in this song is as vital today as ever -- and thank you YardleySlicker - for a great post.
Saw this movie in class the other day, we've had a series of lectures about physical work environment.. A very touching movie - and by your posts it seems its based on a real story? I didnt know that. All the same, a touching movie and horrible working conditions.. Makes me motivated for my future work in HRM, making the work place better etc. No matter if its a fabric or an office. Peace.
A Simple Song , totally honest for most of our circumstances and eventual meaningless outcomes in our current lives...How truly important becomes heaven's BEATIFIC VISION, where earthly significance is nothing more than a passing moment!
@beingLarry I mean the song is so well written it could be applied to most of us. My heart skipped a beat when I heard it for the first time. As a song writer, I drew great inspiration from it.
Each time I listen to the ontomaopeic form the composer intended in the meliflouous voice Ms. Warnes has...brings tears to my eyes... thinking of millions like YardleySlicker 's Father... the backbone of the Free Market.

Thank you YardleySlicker for you post. In this time of ignorant union-bashing it is so refreshing to hear the truth told about who union workers are and all they have done for us in this country. Thank you and thanks to your dad. he's a hero.
Every person has some more hope from this wondrous collaboration. I picture the Lovely Archtypal Angelic Ms. Warnes... harp in hand... sitting on a wall at Heaven's Gate ... appointed by the Almighty Great Spirit..singing this perfect arrangment to those who have worked hard and deserve to face Saint Peter and the Pearly Gates.
Our only hope... the main entrance to Real Life... immortality.
Just saw Norma Rae again last night for the first time in years... always loved this song so much.. it just fit the film so well. And all these years I thought it was Linda Ronstadt singing! :D

My Dad worked as a rep for the United Auto Workers in Detroit. I grew up hearing his stories about the back-breaking work of car assembly-the men climbing in and out of the cars doing all the installations, while being timed and told to work faster. Any time a man got fired, Dad took it personally. As a child, I became afraid of the words "got fired". He fought for all his guys, black and white, and even the most hard core anti-union came to respect him. Dad loved Norma Rae. Thanks for post.
@YardleySlicker We could use your Dad today. Not just in the Auto Workes Union. Just in life because he sounds like a good man, willing to stick up for "the Little guy".
@Twom44 Thanks for your kind words, Dad was part of the "Greatest Generation" , and I know there were and hope there are many more like him out there, like people who have responded to my post. Take care.
Thank you so very much! I can't find the soundrack as yet but I adore this song and the opening scene in the film with this song is so elegiac, beautiful, hauntingly simple it has never left me. Thanks very much.
I came away from seeing 'Norma Rae' all those many years ago humming this song. Thanks a lot boswell69! They don't write them like this for movies anymore which is our loss.
" norma rae " was such a salute to unions ; and to working people everywhere . that is why i love this song so much - i worked hard for nearly 30 years , and was a proud union member . but i felt it was also a salute to my family ; who worked hard all their lives . anyone who is a simple working man OR woman can appreciate this song . the film - and this song - are both classics .
I've long thought this one of the most beautiful songs of all time, but there are surprisingly few of us...I've seen it reviewed badly on IMD and in a respectable book on Oscar winning songs. Ah, there's no accounting for taste! It was never available as a single in Australia, and barely available as an MP3 download...which I'm still looking for, by the way. I bow to Boswell for posting.
Thank you so much for posting this song....it couldn't have come at a better time....somehow it is very calming....made me get out my copy of Norma Rae....again....thank you
i dedicate this song to all the working people all there ; and all those people who WANT to work . we're going through a rough patch now as a nation ; but i hope and pray that things will indeed ; get " a little bit better " . god bless ; and peace
I've been looking for this song for years. My family said that time would have been better spent on a career or a relationship, but I had to find this song. 40 hours a week, for years, but finally I got it. Thanks. Now I can have a life.
@Kevin90028 kevin ; you are a man after my own heart ! it took me nearly 2 months to track down " promenade" by peter white ( best smooth jazz song EVER ) ; and i was going insane until i found out the name of the song and who played it . thanks for showing me that i am not the only music nut out there - what a great pair we would make !
I've been looking for this since 1979! I bought the film just to hear the song. THANK YOU for posting this. It still makes me cry......31 years later....
I've had a hard week with having to put my father in a nursing home this week and like this song says, he was a hard working man all his life. I hadn't thought of this song in close to 25 years and this morning I awoke with it playing in my dream. Funny that isn't it?
Exquisite voice of a very under rated performer. This song is often miscredited as well. I always thought it was listed as "Working Man" but didn't find it that way. She is beautiful and the composition is outstanding. I would love to sing this song.

i just cry when i hear this song . my parents worked so hard all their lives ; and my brother and sisters have done the same . i just retired after having worked for nearly 30 years as an r.n. . i loved being a nurse ; i loved knowing i was working hard and ( hopefully ) accomplishing something . here's to working people everywhere ; and to you people out of work - hope you find work soon . bless working people everywhere . this song says it all .
Thanks, this is such a tough song to find in any form, have been searching for years, and only found an instrumental a few years ago on an Oscar winning album. Such a beautiful song, great voice and terrific movie.
