  • Booker Ervin tenor solo starting at 3:37 goes for about a minute. the first sax solo is on an alto sax, so that's either John Handy or Shafi Hadi. the unique sound of the late Mr. Ervin, may he rest in peace, one of my favorite artists for years is easily identifiable. He's on the Antibes version also. He was overshadowed by the late John Coltrane, may he rest in peace, who understandably overshadowed any other tenor sax player from the 1960s or any other time, except for Lester Fucking Young.

  • Who's on the sax?

  • @emuwithrabies Booker Ervin and Charles Handy are on tenor saxes and Shafi Hadi is on alto sax. You are probably referring to the lead sax that has a soulful signifying feel to it, and my guess would be that it is probably the late great Booker Ervin, may he rest in peace. He was Charles Mingus' main saxophonist in the late 50s and early 60s. He led his own groups until his untimely death from kidney disease at the age of 39 in 1970. Mr. Ervin's albums as leader are outstanding. The Book cooks.

  • @salgoudsamoht outstanding! depending on the recording date, you might be dead on :P

  • @MorbidAzagthothDeath thanks, i was just listing the saxophonists on the credits of the Mingus Ah Um album that i have on cassette tape, recorded May 5 and 12 at Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City. actually, it doesn't distinguish between tenor and alto saxes, just 'Saxophone' and the three outstanding players to whom a reference was made. i guess i got that info somewhere else, or i could be imagining things because i thought John Handy played (plays?) alto most of the time. take care

  • "ミンガス・アー・アム"BetterGetInYourSoul"~ミンガスの中でも出色トラック!~"ジャズはこうでなくちゃ"の見本 #jazzm

  • @blackandtanful so desu ne. Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting mo soul ni subarashii jazzu desu ne. Disk Union Shinjuku shoten no jazzu wa ichiban desu.

  • @haupper, he actually re-did this song on his album Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus that may be even more energetic and exciting.

  • I love this, this is great. This is nice with a bottle of good wine.

  • If a more glorious 7.5 minutes of music was recorded I have not yet heard it.

  • I git it in my pants every time I listen to this...

  • I love his parents.

  • Master!!! my favorite jazz song!

  • Behold God created Mingus & He smiled & chilled out awhile!

  • Η Τζαζ στο Τρίτο. Μια εκπομπή με τον Κώστα Γιαννουλόπουλο. Καλησπέρα....

  • He has a unique style..A genius!

  • I would like to echo the words of sunra3000. Mingus and Lightnin' Hopkins are the two greatest musical treasures this country has ever produced, classical, popular, country, jazz, blues or otherwise.

  • wierd Jazz FM wuz playing this when i got home form school! its really good!

    i love Jazz! <3

  • Has destroyed me every time for 49 years....nothins changed.

  • 3:36 on is sublime

  • good god god damn!

  • the greatest

  • love this song!

  • Awesome music!

  • i saw charlie right b4 he died, they wheeled him out on a friggin dolly, i almost cried. he leaned on the bass, didnt play, really, touring like so many genius black musicians had to, they needed the damn money...

a great american composer, still vastly underappreciated

    a national treasure

  • @sunra3000 what does his being black have anything to do with it?

  • In the comment you're responding to? Everything. Genius black musicians in his age had to tour because it wasn't easy for their music to be appreciated nor for them to be taken seriously. They didn't get much money from their work and they usually weren't good at holding on to it. It's not PC, at least not the positive kind, to completely avoid discussion of race when it is contextually necessary.

  • The Master at his best - Charles who?

  • 3:36 is sheer brilliance. Absolutely breathtaking

  • Danny Richmond is the only drummer I can think of whose solos are continuations of previous melodic and emotional ideas, rather than simply drum breaks that plop into the middle of the song. Check out Mingus' "Gun Slinging Bird"

  • Doin this in my School Big Band... Sammy Nestico version though aha :S

  • The version on 'Mingus Mingus Mingus' (Impulse) is even better, I think.

  • I agree with that, and also the one on 'Live At The Antibes' which is my favourite

  • It is. There's nothing lacking in this version. It's amazing. But, the MingusX5 is otherworldly.

  • Nope this is "Better git your soul in it"....i will upload Wednesday Night Pray meeting for you guys in a bit. I do love the clap bridge on this though. AWESOME

  • I was given that music on tape when I was 19(paleozoic era).I read Charlie Mingus autobiography "beneath the underdogs" several years ago and I came to realise that these people no matter how hard their life was they really knew what they were doing and what they were after in life.

  • Great music and great band!

Mingus is one of the best musician in jazz history!

  • GIT!!!

  • If only Real Book could cure my undieing desire to play this. Haha. I've always loved this song andseeing how it was my first taste of Mingus, it's also my favorite

  • I bloody love Charles Mingus. And to think, I only know about him through Family Guy.

  • huh? which episode was this?

  • PTV. Quagmire's show.

  • intense.brilliant trombone,Jimmy Knepper.

    but ends ,AMEN

  • This song is timeless.

  • This is so great but I love, Sunday Night Pray Meeting even better, or is it Saturday Night..they are very similar that's on his Blues and Roots album, I have both of these also on this is his Please don't drop that A-tom bomb on me....in which Charlie sings...!

  • I thought it was Wednesday night? Maybe I'm just crazy. Regardless, this track is bangin'!

  • you're right, its Wednesday.

  • @TJTele52 He sings on plenty of tracks- sometimes it's just to add another voice to the group, and sometimes he does actual lyrics. The lyrics are usually pretty funny (like "Eat that chicken" or "Mamas and babies don't like no shortening bread/that's a dirty old lie/a white man lie")

  • @jazzfreak11 or my favorite lyric of his ever: oh lord, don't drop that atomic bomb on me :)

    viva Mingus!

  • Oh...

    Great composition.

Some of the greatest drumming I've heard also.

  • comment to the song....

    Sounds huge.

  • Goddam. Mingus is amazing.

  • he is the best bassist ever

  • soul-full

  • you can hear chuck in the background saying

"I know what I told him!" Incredible music, Dude hated to be outdone.

  • I honestly think this might be the best jazz song of all time

  • personally parchy, i'd vote for the sermon by jimmy smith but this would be a close second, imo of course :-)

  • ... Η Jazz στο Τρίτο, με τον Κώστα Γιαννουλόπουλο...

    Καλησπέρα...

  • WOW........ what's up with the ignorance here????? what you bleed blue when cut or something??? I thought humans were jus that -- human beings!!! WOW not sure why i even bother responding to this, miseducated, ignorant and "lost" thoughts.....

  • Best to just try and ignore pricks like that

  • Charlie Mingus awesome instrumentalist. Guess it was the late 1960's when this lost its power in the market, but no matter Charlie live on in our soul~

3:40~4:09 is my favorite part. I'd start dancing at that point. No matter that everyone else be watching in awe,

I'd dance, and by 5:18, I would be in the 12th dimension, HEaveN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song KICKS ASS! I can't stop grooving!

  • Great piece of music.. At 2.56 the piano part sounds a lot like Cantloupe Island :p Does anyone agree?

  • It's actually "Better Git It In Your Soul" (You could change the title anytime.)... Pardon me for slightly correcting you here. Anyway, a wonderful track, and anyone who posts such timeless music can be called my friend. For more great swingin' jazz, check out my blog. It's linked with my profile.

    Best, and keep it up!

    Bruno "Brew" Leicht

  • I thought it was "Better Get Hit In Your Soul" No?

  • Yeah, that's it! My LP cover was wrong. It's also written like this: "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul" -- At least on amazon (dot) com LOL -- Mysterious Mingus Fingus, I only say.

  • lolAlright dude.

  • I think both are right. I have it labeled as "Better Git It In Your Soul" on Mingus Ah, Um. And "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" on Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, and Mingus at Antibes.

  • I love it

  • pure genius, the compilations of each genre of music

  • Charles Mingus is one of the saints of jazz .A composer who's innovations and arrangement influenced and informed so much of modern music post Mingus.

  • i don't know what to say....just extremely great is not enough:(

  • When God blesses America, this is the America he blesses. I love this song.

  • not quite sure what you mean, but man i dig it.

  • Charles WAS and is America!!!!

  • If you can find it check out Ronnie Cuber's Version.

Actually anything by Cuber is gold.

    Bari God.

  • i'm just found it

thanks very much for the information

    my sweet friend

  • amazing.

  • This is serious jazz. Thanks for sharing.

  • this shit blows mind every time i listen to it

  • lol

  • Mingus and his band transcend my mind to a place where my body cannot go.

  • The GREATEST

  • one of the greatest, most furious jazz pieces ever.
