Booker Ervin tenor solo starting at 3:37 goes for about a minute. the first sax solo is on an alto sax, so that's either John Handy or Shafi Hadi. the unique sound of the late Mr. Ervin, may he rest in peace, one of my favorite artists for years is easily identifiable. He's on the Antibes version also. He was overshadowed by the late John Coltrane, may he rest in peace, who understandably overshadowed any other tenor sax player from the 1960s or any other time, except for Lester Fucking Young.
@emuwithrabies Booker Ervin and Charles Handy are on tenor saxes and Shafi Hadi is on alto sax. You are probably referring to the lead sax that has a soulful signifying feel to it, and my guess would be that it is probably the late great Booker Ervin, may he rest in peace. He was Charles Mingus' main saxophonist in the late 50s and early 60s. He led his own groups until his untimely death from kidney disease at the age of 39 in 1970. Mr. Ervin's albums as leader are outstanding. The Book cooks.
@MorbidAzagthothDeath thanks, i was just listing the saxophonists on the credits of the Mingus Ah Um album that i have on cassette tape, recorded May 5 and 12 at Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City. actually, it doesn't distinguish between tenor and alto saxes, just 'Saxophone' and the three outstanding players to whom a reference was made. i guess i got that info somewhere else, or i could be imagining things because i thought John Handy played (plays?) alto most of the time. take care
I would like to echo the words of sunra3000. Mingus and Lightnin' Hopkins are the two greatest musical treasures this country has ever produced, classical, popular, country, jazz, blues or otherwise.
i saw charlie right b4 he died, they wheeled him out on a friggin dolly, i almost cried. he leaned on the bass, didnt play, really, touring like so many genius black musicians had to, they needed the damn money...
a great american composer, still vastly underappreciated
In the comment you're responding to? Everything. Genius black musicians in his age had to tour because it wasn't easy for their music to be appreciated nor for them to be taken seriously. They didn't get much money from their work and they usually weren't good at holding on to it. It's not PC, at least not the positive kind, to completely avoid discussion of race when it is contextually necessary.
Danny Richmond is the only drummer I can think of whose solos are continuations of previous melodic and emotional ideas, rather than simply drum breaks that plop into the middle of the song. Check out Mingus' "Gun Slinging Bird"
Nope this is "Better git your soul in it"....i will upload Wednesday Night Pray meeting for you guys in a bit. I do love the clap bridge on this though. AWESOME
I was given that music on tape when I was 19(paleozoic era).I read Charlie Mingus autobiography "beneath the underdogs" several years ago and I came to realise that these people no matter how hard their life was they really knew what they were doing and what they were after in life.
If only Real Book could cure my undieing desire to play this. Haha. I've always loved this song andseeing how it was my first taste of Mingus, it's also my favorite
This is so great but I love, Sunday Night Pray Meeting even better, or is it Saturday Night..they are very similar that's on his Blues and Roots album, I have both of these also on this is his Please don't drop that A-tom bomb on me....in which Charlie sings...!
@TJTele52 He sings on plenty of tracks- sometimes it's just to add another voice to the group, and sometimes he does actual lyrics. The lyrics are usually pretty funny (like "Eat that chicken" or "Mamas and babies don't like no shortening bread/that's a dirty old lie/a white man lie")
WOW........ what's up with the ignorance here????? what you bleed blue when cut or something??? I thought humans were jus that -- human beings!!! WOW not sure why i even bother responding to this, miseducated, ignorant and "lost" thoughts.....
Charlie Mingus awesome instrumentalist. Guess it was the late 1960's when this lost its power in the market, but no matter Charlie live on in our soul~
3:40~4:09 is my favorite part. I'd start dancing at that point. No matter that everyone else be watching in awe,

Yeah, that's it! My LP cover was wrong. It's also written like this: "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul" -- At least on amazon (dot) com LOL -- Mysterious Mingus Fingus, I only say.
I think both are right. I have it labeled as "Better Git It In Your Soul" on Mingus Ah, Um. And "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" on Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, and Mingus at Antibes.
Charles Mingus is one of the saints of jazz .A composer who's innovations and arrangement influenced and informed so much of modern music post Mingus.
