This is the most powerful scene in the entire film, because it shows that, no matter what war (or anything else, for that matter) does to a man, nothing can strip him of his basic humanity if he wishes to retain it.
Wow! A war-weary group of soldiers, starving for entertainment and pretty girls, are all of the sudden confronted with a simple enemy girl's voice of a song of a true lover who'd do anything to save his girl. There were tears in the hard-bitten soldiers' eyes, remembering their own loved ones, as they listened and finally joined in--to this simple, yet oh so powerful melody that touched war hardened hearts in it's simplicity and honesty. Well done movie and well done scene.
@movvx Can anyone explain this scene? She is singing a German song...they are French...it appears they would be familiar with the song...but they can't be...since it's not their language....does not make sense. Help!
@samuel17517 The girl is the simbol of the enemy, the have seen their friends die, they have been in the war with a deep hate to all the enemy ( Germany ) represents. But that girl, with a simple song make those warriors full of courage and hate cry. The scene is wonderful because it gets the situation perfectly and puts you in a moment were soldiers became human. The message of the song is not really important, its the situation of the scene what has the message.
@samuel17517 The French before the war would have been familiar with german folk songs and vice versa as they travel and visit other countries and meet tourists, this is why they don't know the words and are humming it because they know the story the song embodies and feel sentimental about their own similar folksongs
A faithful soldier, without fear, He loved his girl for one whole year, For one whole year and longer yet, His love for her, he'd ne'er forget. --- A long black coat, I must now wear. A sorrow great, is what I bear. A sorrow great and so much more, My grief it will end nevermore.
jeechs sais that this song is a "german military song". Thats not true; it's an old german folk song, ein "Volkslied", and it's a love song, ein "Liebeslied". It's very simple, and in german language: "anrührend". It's harmless; in this song and in the heart of the soldier (the "hussar") who is singing the song there is no harm. He is like a child, "mit einem reinen Herzen". That's the reason, this final szene is so "anrührend", touching.

Didn't Kubrick wind up marrying the actress, and isn't she related to Veit Harlan?

I love this version above all others! It truly gives the flavor of the song rather than that of either, a Karnival song or a pro military piece.
It is a song of true love regardless of circumstances...that a soldier should abandon post and martial duty to take care of his hearts true love...

It´s not a carnivals song nor a military song, it is about love and unconditional loyality (for a girl, not a country or shit).
The Husar leaves everything he owns to get to his girl when he hears she is ill and to accompany her to her grave.
Beautiful.
