Thanks for posting..This song has a very dark, moody feel to it, similar to Mahalia's City Called Heaven song that somebody else posted here on YouTube..at least, to my ears.
anyway marion williams is the only one; je suis français et j'écoute marion williams tous les jours, c'est une des plus grande voix de ce siècle; il est regrettable qu'elle se soit cantonnée au gospel .
This was the first recording done by the Stars after leaving the Ward Singers.Frances Steadman and Esther Ford were the lead singers but Marion added her adlibs as only she could do.The only survivor of this group is"Lady" Esther Ford who is yet alive and well and still singing with the same clarity.
Would you please forgive me. When i first read your comment about Frances, it seemed off, but then i realized what you were saying, and i totaly agree with you. The Ward Singers did have a chauffuer named "Rudy" and that is whom i thought you were referring to. Aqain, sorry. I don't drink anything stronger that pepsi.
so true! they got a rotten deal by clara and mother ward...but they prevailed in the end! while mother ward and clara...well..you all know how that turned out. its true, you reap what you sow! gotta do right by folks.
The group's first release, this Marion Williams composition was heard as an oblique reference to certain "folk," namely Gertrude and Clara Ward. The hand-claps were also note-worthy, establishing that the Stars would NOT sound like the Wards. Marion, the group's composer and arranger, had another vision. Beautiful leads here by Lady Esther Ford and "Sister Thunder," Frances Steadman.
...you know it was really no real reason for clara and mrs.ward to behave that way, the WARDS made crazy money! many years ago while in atlanta, Jessie Rudolph Tucker, told me the same gosh darn thing! "i do all the work, you get all the money" greed, greed, and more greed! but you gotta do folks right! i often would wonder in the 10 years that Gertrude lived after Clara, did she ever sit and think about the treatment she doled out to her Singers....
One of the Ward Singers told me that Gertrude Ward did eventually start regretting how she treated the members, and was even feeling guilty on her death bed. I can't say if this is true or not, because I was not there, but a member who's a part of the Ward Singer legacy shared that with me.
she probaly did have feelings of regret, we all knew that the wards paid their singers very little money for all the fine work they turned out. during my many visits to ruth's house i would often see clara, and she seemed pleasant enough, but i could tell that she really had the "STAR COMPLEX" jessie rudolph tucker related the tale to me. i guess in the end ol'gertie saw she couldn't take any of her earthly conquests with her. and probaly wondered why did i do this in the 1st place????
are you serious! or you trying to be funny? jessie rudolph tucker was one of the quickly assembled singers that clara and gertrude put together after marian williams and the other gals left them back in 1958! and we all know that the 2nd set of wards singer never were as good as that 1st line up! featuring marian, kitty, frances, and the rest of the gang.
have you been drinking? i swear your comments get more bizarre with each posting. i know that frances was a contralto! point i was making is that her strong contralto put a lid on the soaring sopranos that became the "WARD TRADEMARK" do you now understand? hope so!
The harmonies are really nice on here and Steadman better sing! This song is so,so true folks don't care how they treat you. Post on my friend, post on!!!
Beautiful. Long live the Stars of Faith!

Sister Thunder..that fits Frances Steadman!

Frances Steadman was sooooooooooo under rated! she alone held the lid on all those other soaring soprano's in the ward stable.

Aretha recounts a story in her autobiography how Queen Mahalia cheated her out of her first payday.

above comment made in reference to the $ issues in Gospel's golden era (ie the G. Ward under paying the other singers).

Frances Steadman was not a soprano. She was an electrifying contralto.

What about Kitty?
taddyd1 2 years ago
Kitty was a soprano, but she wasn't one of the "soaring" ones like Carrie Williams, Marion Williams, Mildred Means, or Agnes Jackson.
