  • I had this before I had the Master System version It was actually OK

  • who gives a toss if the obstacles and enemies are vector. It was the 80s and NOTHING was going to compare to the ARCADE. Compared to some home versions of Space Harrier, this at least had speed, playability and decent music for it's time. Yes, CPC Amstrad was a kick in the pants and still is. Excellent stuff

  • I lol'd. Needs more ARRRRRRGH death sounds. Thanks for the vid.

  • Never mind sad 'cant get a girlfriend' chat about 16k, 64k ram rom wire graphics or whatever blah blah blah blah blah....... I freakin' loved this game on my amstrad as a kid - and i finished it without a cheat! Bring back 80's games!!

  • can they have used the vector graphics to minimize the rom size

or did they use them to get higher fps

    or maybe both

  • fcuking partial vector grafix, why did the usa decide to do this, it was elite's game!

  • the atari version looks and sounds much better

  • To be fair this must be a 64K Ram version, and perhaps more wires (and a better palette use) wouldn't have hurt.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • I played it on aC64 and bought it for my CPC and was very angry and disappointed.

Space Harrier is shit on cpc, i played it just 2 times on it.

    c64 is the better game-computer.

  • Wow, rasterized vector graphics, that's an intersting route to take. I suppose that was doen toe try to acheive a smoother framerate.

  • i like the hollow trees, too bad you can't fly through them without hittig the outline.

  • Too Bad

  • NO! not the CPC Version!!! I'm going to be blinded by the shit poor graphics! Just bring us the SMS Version and we'll all be happy.

  • omg.........what happened to Space Harrier! They destroyed it on the Amstrad!

  • OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Space Harrier was such an amazing game and this version... Well, I suppose they retained the speed. I recently completed my tribute to Space Harrier - a rail shooter called Antagonism. If any SH fans are interested it can be accessed from my channel.

  • Sprites and 3D are what the CPC is good at, why did they not bother filling the sprites?? You would only need one large sprite per character then apply scaling to shrink it "in the distance" accordingly, something a 4Mhz system could do with ease. Not as if there's 100s of sprites on screen is there??

Looks like a rush job to me.

  • Filling ploygons is MUCH slower. Thats why the freescape games like Total eclipse run at about 2 frames per second.

  • I'm not talking about polygons, I'm talking about using sprites and sprite scaling in a Outrun style etc.

I used to be quite nifty with Z80 and sprites were fairly easy to do on a 16 colour screen, don't know about scaling though. Might have been memory limitations that prevented it, rather than difficulty.

  • @zombiemod

You clearly don't know the CPC specification and capabalities well.

Vectorised graphics or even zoomable sprites are not that easy on this full software machine.

Z80 is not all, the graphics were quite heavy on CPC and too few hardware support.

  • @macdeath69 I do, I used to program the Amstrad CPC in Z80. The CPC, despite having 16K of RAM to shift in full-screen, was more than capable of vector graphics. Castle Master is proof, and thats solid fill polys albeit with a smaller window.

Sprite scaling would be tricky, but not impossible.

    Did you program Z80?

  • @zombiemod

Castle Master is impressive visually but lacks the fastness SpaceHarrier has, but of course SpaceHarrier is quite old and CPC got betterly programmed after this era or nowadays (scene is still active)

Do you go to CPCwiki forum ? we are having this kind of discussion there on mixing 3D/wire graphics with 2D effects...

Would be nice to see you there...

Also halas I don't really code but i'm involved in graphics and discuss a lot with coders..

Sorry I wasn't meant to be rude.

  • This sounds like it was made by the same guys who made the C64 port. And I'm pretty sure it's not just me.

  • Why are the trees and enemies vector graphics :/

  • absolute classic.... love this

Erv and I completed this without cheats a few years back took us forever to do it so many different attack pattern to learn...

awesome fun though and dream to play AA should have given it a higher rating but then again they were rather weak with their game reviews... how can anyone give driller and those other freescape games raves / Mastergames unbelieveable....

  • I thought this conversion was great, kept the speed and the all important playability factor of the arcade. The enemy and landscape objects although not filled in, are easily spotted and do nothing to hamper the game. A really good conversion with good music and sound.

  • This looks so bad it is likely to cause nosebleeds! thanx for posting tho-fascinating

  • Wow, they couldn't even fill the sprites on this one.

  • You have demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of what a sprite is.

  • looks like hes in some kind of football field
