THIS was a 'landing' ..and as pointed out, the external fuel tank was jettisoned just before the F-104 impacted the arresting cable..which did not appear to have been set up right, as it did not do its job. If you are going to 'arrest' aircraft, you should get the Navy to supervise.
Everything about this clip sucks and is misleading. Especially the music, which sounded OK the first 80 times I heard it attached to a YT clip but is now getting a bit effing irritating.

The first pass, he was dirtied up with wheels and flaps down, was almost stalling, and was still doing over 170 mph. The second pass, he cleaned it up and hit the afterburner. If you blinked, you missed him.
I miss those days, but wouldn't relive them for any amount of money.

The first ones had vertical ejection seats. But those were all changed. When this film was shot however, they might have still had downward ejection seats.
You're right. The pilot in this particular video did survive, and had a long career in the USAF following this accident, but some videos on youtube are a little sick.
Crazy! It looks like he tried to drop his tail hook but accidentally dropped his tanks. This has to be one of the most comical "crashes" that I have ever seen.
@oisiaa Tailhooks are used on naval carrier aircraft which the starfighter definately is not - here it looks like he dropped the tank deliberately to help him stop - reduced momentum, plus may have still had fuel in it which is a fire risk.
Airforce aircraft (though not all) have tailhooks for emergency stopping just like the Navy and Marine Corp. It doesn't look like the 104 had it's tail hook down which if this was an emergency would indicate it didn't have one. That was a "catch" cable strung accross the runway he ran into. If he didn't have a tailhook then it was probably designed to get caught up in the landing gear, which might explain why Air Force now use tailhooks.
I believe you will find the aircraft was landing and dropped the tank prior to hitting the barrier. From the results of the barrier, they probably designed a better one after that SNAFU. In any case, I hope the pilot survived.

This video is a aircraft recovery trial of an F104 Starfighter for short landing practice.
What it dropped is not a BOMB; it is an empty fuel tank.
I watched this documentary..
They manage to recover the plane successfully at second trial.
