What's the point in upgrading the ram if all it does is transfer data? Ram is so cheap, it would only cost them about $10 to put 1gb in, therefore I can't imagine an upgrade would make any difference. pls advise.
If you're a power user like myself you'll be installing quite a few add ons and modifications beyond the home server interface that HP wants you to use. If these are all running concurrently then the server uses more and more RAM. This is the best fix that I know of. Any CPU upgrades ive tried have worked but been a little touchy. You have to get the EXACT voltage and ratings for anything to run stably.
You can upgrade the CPU, yes. There are ways to hook up a VGA connection but it requires more advanced tweaking beyond my scope. The only thing you can hear in the server is the hard drive whirring. Very quiet.
I just checked the up time indicator on the server and it reads over 2 months of being on. I also have a massive battery backup which protects it.
HP's pre-sales website does not answer inquiries regarding whether adding RAM to this product will still void the warranty. Previously it did, though I had heard rumors to the contrary lately. Perhaps this indication of HP's dedication to consumer inquiries is telling regarding decisions to purchase this at all. Also, to the erudite gentleman inquiring here regarding overwriting this box with linux, save yourself the $150 paid for WHS and build a box yourself...much cheaper that way.
how much dose the server cost i want a cheap onethen reprogram it with linux to max out the use its a copmuter thats it. wow amazing seriosly hack it with the specail cablke for kvm and install linux or sumthing else then perfect desktop

Has anyone ever replaced or modified the motherboard on an EX machine?

It would make more sense to use a mini itx mobo stick it inside a case and stuff it full of hard drives. To many screws and clips to wind up missing.

I noticed this unit does not allow you to RAID - if I were to update the OS to 2008, would I be able to RAID?

"safe to be left on 24/7? "
What a stupid question again...sigh. What do you think servers are for? To shut them down when you leave the house or go to bed? ha!ha!ha!

hypershoe 3 years ago
It uses DDR2 667 DIMM unbuffered RAM.
Should be able to pick up a stick from best buy for about $35-$45
kdoubt 3 years ago
i think there is an easier way to do that.

Nope, this is the only way to upgrade the RAM

how much of a performance boast is noticed?
alucard2107 3 years ago
If you're dealing with addins then you'll really notice the difference. For myself, I'd compare it to a 3x-5x performance gain.

Nice howto but very low sound. This machine is very compact but I do like drive bay expansion slots. Really cool !
