It pisses me off to see once again the myth perpetuated (at 1:14) that handwashing dishes uses more water than a machine. 20 gallons (~75L)? Only if you are an idiot who leaves the water running full blast the entire time. Our household of 3 people uses about 4 gallons (15L)/day for dishwashing by hand and we haven't got all the embedded energy and water waste involved in buying a dishwasher. The advice to people should be if you already have a dishwasher, go ahead and use it but don't buy one.
The fact that earth is mostly water mislead many to forget that salt water cannot be consumed as it is. So Water Scarcity is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
Thank you for such an excellent video encouraging water conservation.
@Torchic956 That is already being done on an increasing basis. There are major problems with high energy requirements (and therefore contributing to global warming and peak oil problems) and ecosystem damage as the extra salty water gets dumped back in the ocean (killing plants and animals that can't deal with the higher salinity).
I never understood water conservation...I blame what i was taught in school. The basics of chemistry: matter cannot be created or destroyed only changed. So with that in mind we are drinking the same water the dinosaurs did thousands of years ago as my teacher put it. So why is there a need to conserve water?
@FreakyFur there is not need to conserve water, just... clean water. It will eventually clean itself. Sun heating it up and falls down again going through the sediments and so on. But we use waaay more than that. so we need facilities for it. The less water they have to purify the better.
I disagree with dishwater thing, it obviously uses less water then hand washing but relying on it results in higher energy use, the need to purchase a several hundred dollar machine, repair costs, dish detergent costs, and recycling the system should food material on the dishes fail to cleaned off. With hand washing you can personally assure the quality of the job, be more conservative if you so choose, use maybe a few cLs of dish soap, and learn the value of work.
My point was, If I take a 20 min shower or a 10 min shower wont make much of a difference in Sweden and wont really effect the rest of the world.
Areas that will have serious problems with freshwater in the coming years is not really from over use but because of pollution, over population and drought.
And I cant really change that except sending people condoms.
I try to only eat meat from Scandinavia, mostly for the rain forest and diseases.

@swedisagnostic I agree..People are not thinking outside of the box.
Our consumption has no effect on the levels of drinking water since it's an endless (and very fast) cycle of evaporization and percipitation, it's more about how we are destroying this planet.
By polluting it with all sorts of toxins and shit we are fucking up the eco system and shortening the supply of drinkable water. The problem is mostly man made, but people are not looking at the whole picture here...
You know, you should also take the population of other creatures into consideration with this as well...one human and one cow use less water than five humans and seven cows...
Why should we switch from coffee to tea? Do we want South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia to lose a vital part of their economy and let China and India flourish? Of course, much coffee is not fair-trade certified, but something for the farmers is better than nothing. Also, if we're switching from beef to chicken, aside from putting the cattle ranchers out of business, we could all switch to vegetarianism, and I doubt many people would be willing to sacrifice burgers and steak.
The USA used the most water per capita in the world in 2000, (1682 cubic meters) and there is no reason not to believe it still isn't number one in water consumption. We need to take more action to reduce water useage
I guess they are counting how much water is used for that egg to get produced, I guess they count the water that is used during the whole process. Maybe there is a lot of water used on the machinery cleaning, also when they clean the eggs so they don't have excrement all over. We use more water than we realize when we do things.
I'm doing all the right things except washing dishes by hand! Whoo hoo, time to get a dishwasher!
Also turn off water while brushing your teeth. Turn it on when you're finished. There's no need to leave the water running down the drain while you're brushing.
please people, this is the least of our problems right now, we need to focus on the bigger ones like global warming and expanding our food supply.. soon we're gonna be in a famine rather than a drought
i live in a city in america, and of course, the companies bribe us with all this good food. but i assure you we will run out of food before we run out of water..
We are corrupting the water cycle. Only 2.8% of the earths water is fresh water, and over 77% of the fresh water is frozen. We are depleting ground water, faster than it can be replenished. We are polluting water sheds and everything, so dont think we can use all the water we want because nature will take care of it.
i agree ,we do have to save not just water but everything that we've plenty of but we'll never know when we're gonna need just a little bit of it
and btw the world will never run out of water , it goes in cycles , u drink the water u pee the water , it gets filtered by the sand and soil ,runs in streams to river or sea evaporate .. u know the story
Although I completely agree with the video, and believe we can save a ton of water, I think the facts are a bit skewed. When referring to the hamburger's 672 gallon price tag, does the water mean water fed to the cow which made the hamburger? If it's that way, then it makes multiple hamburgers right? (Maybe if you somehow indicated "virtual water use" like you did in the magazine, it would be clearer)
This was a great video, and I hope you come out with more animated statistics like this.
Can't disappear, but it can become unusable (ie. contaminated, ending up in the ocean). Only about 3% of the Earth's water supply is fresh water (and 2/3 of that water is frozen in glaciers).
It takes a lot of money to desalinate salt water and clean contaminated water.
You can think of "cheap" useable water as any another resources that gets produced (or recycled) by nature. So in one sense, if you use more than you can produce, than you are running out of "net" water. We have definitely crossed this line a long time ago.
However, we have also used and lost most of our water reservoir like underground (think LA) and glaciers (to global warming). So in a truer sense, we are running out of the total amount of water available, not just the net.
Honestly - i'm not paranoid about the usage of water - I'm saving as much as I can - but I'm not going paranoid. I won't force myself to eat cereals if I want to eat eggs. What I wonder more about - is the insane waste of water that ppl use for their lawn - or the fountains in some cities (Look at Las Vegas! So much water and electricity going to waste!!! Las Vegas has to import their water from supplies all around it).
yes thats true, but it cost so much money and effort to clean the water. the filter machines cost also water, so that means in the end its a never ending cycle
True, but where can water go when it condenses back down. Statistically (and in reality) into the salty salty ocean as opposed to nice fresh glaciers, moutain top snow, underground freshwater aquifers, close by sources, etc.
Spread the word if you believe me, counterpoint me if you don't.

Grey water is good for your garden (water from dish-washing, showers, clothes-washing, baths, car-washing, house-cleaning) don't throw away your grey water and use new water to water your flowers.
Here (in the Philippines) our household water is from a well, and a good proportion of the public electricity is hydroelectricity. Quite effective really - the further down the well the water is, the further you need to haul the buckets.

swedisagnostic 2 years ago
veganvvarrior 2 years ago
swedisagnostic 2 years ago
veganvvarrior 2 years ago
swedisagnostic 2 years ago

You fools, It's the amount of water used in the entire process up to the point where you purchase the product, not just the product itself.
KileSimons 2 years ago 3
You know, you should also take the population of other creatures into consideration with this as well...one human and one cow use less water than five humans and seven cows...

How does a burger have 672 gallons while a salad have only 31, it takes a tad bit more water to grow vegtables.

Doesn't take 72 gallons to cook the eggs but it takes that many to keep the chicken alive to lay the eggs.

SOTSVideos 2 years ago
how are we using more water cooking eggs as opposed to eating milk/cereal?
swtxwishes 2 years ago
I guess they are counting how much water is used for that egg to get produced, I guess they count the water that is used during the whole process. Maybe there is a lot of water used on the machinery cleaning, also when they clean the eggs so they don't have excrement all over. We use more water than we realize when we do things.

I'm doing all the right things except washing dishes by hand! Whoo hoo, time to get a dishwasher!
Also turn off water while brushing your teeth. Turn it on when you're finished. There's no need to leave the water running down the drain while you're brushing.

please people, this is the least of our problems right now, we need to focus on the bigger ones like global warming and expanding our food supply.. soon we're gonna be in a famine rather than a drought

i live in a city in america, and of course, the companies bribe us with all this good food. but i assure you we will run out of food before we run out of water..
ironmadion55 2 years ago
We are corrupting the water cycle. Only 2.8% of the earths water is fresh water, and over 77% of the fresh water is frozen. We are depleting ground water, faster than it can be replenished. We are polluting water sheds and everything, so dont think we can use all the water we want because nature will take care of it.

Since earth was formed,,, that same amount of water is still here and will always be here.. we never lose water...
Greg78X 2 years ago
Yeah that's true, there is always the same amount of water.
But most of water on Earth is salt water which is not proper for comsumption.
A lot of drinkable water is polluted which make it undrinkable
Also, with global warming, a bigger amount of water is in gas form (vapor)

i agree ,we do have to save not just water but everything that we've plenty of but we'll never know when we're gonna need just a little bit of it
and btw the world will never run out of water , it goes in cycles , u drink the water u pee the water , it gets filtered by the sand and soil ,runs in streams to river or sea evaporate .. u know the story
world4i 2 years ago
gee! I hope the world doesn't run out of water!
Can someone teach these 'tards about a simple little thing called "the water cycle"???
How about you commit suicide and save 1,893,634 gallons of water a day. Dipshit!
lasmart613 2 years ago
They are talking about fresh water dumbass. Once fresh water touches salt water it too becomes salt water.
mikeye9 2 years ago
and then it evaporates as fresh water, rains on land and collects in fresh water rivers and lakes.
like he said - the water cycle.

Do you think we should be using that Japanese bathing method (where you sit down and use a bucket), instead of having showers?
You see it all the time in anime, it seems to use a LOT less water than showering.
(i'm not sure what it's called though)
roidroid 2 years ago
Well it is called sauna, like the "sauna suit". It comes from that word. Lol, anime..
slimbullet96 2 years ago
Although I completely agree with the video, and believe we can save a ton of water, I think the facts are a bit skewed. When referring to the hamburger's 672 gallon price tag, does the water mean water fed to the cow which made the hamburger? If it's that way, then it makes multiple hamburgers right? (Maybe if you somehow indicated "virtual water use" like you did in the magazine, it would be clearer)
This was a great video, and I hope you come out with more animated statistics like this.
iforgotaboutit 2 years ago
The water used
-To feed the cow
-Watering grain for bun
-Watering Lettus
-Watering Tomato
-Water used to make pulp for paper (wraping and box/bag)
-Water used in creating chese (milk, cow byproduct)
-Shipping and packaging products (this stems down to water used in creating oil)
-Water used to cook burger (oils)
Alot more water is used like in electicity generation, refrideration costs ect.

But I always thought water comes back around no? Where does it go? It can't just disappear, can it?
Aniallator 2 years ago

Pural2 2 years ago
Honestly - i'm not paranoid about the usage of water - I'm saving as much as I can - but I'm not going paranoid. I won't force myself to eat cereals if I want to eat eggs. What I wonder more about - is the insane waste of water that ppl use for their lawn - or the fountains in some cities (Look at Las Vegas! So much water and electricity going to waste!!! Las Vegas has to import their water from supplies all around it).

XxnEr0xXxMaNexX 2 years ago
yes thats true, but it cost so much money and effort to clean the water. the filter machines cost also water, so that means in the end its a never ending cycle
have a nice day :)
liberty1211 2 years ago
True, but where can water go when it condenses back down. Statistically (and in reality) into the salty salty ocean as opposed to nice fresh glaciers, moutain top snow, underground freshwater aquifers, close by sources, etc.
Spread the word if you believe me, counterpoint me if you don't.
