  • Know what ya mean !!!! brilliant to the end !!!!

  • oh god this never gets old or tired! it is an adrenaline fueled anthem! still nearly 30 years on...i love it

  • This must be the worst song ever! There is no musical material as such. What's that ugly semi-modulation in the chorus all about? There is no style here! It's all a non-musical mess. And those late 80s/early 90s blow instrument riffs (a la Blow Monkeys etc), it's so STALE. OK, in that particular aspect they were 10 years before their time, and respect to that, but it's a shit thing to be 10 years ahead with. Anyway, moving on.

  • @Fnoalle

    You obviously know nothing,

These were the days where people actually had talent with no autotune of stuff like that so think before you talk kid

  • @Fnoalle "Bullshit is bullshit, it just goes by different names"

  • @Fnoalle then why the fuck are you listening to this?

  • @Fnoalle

Oh dear some one else who never lived through a musical revolution , odds on your about twelve and just found justin barber or what ever they call him . Only complete arse holes analyse music and don't listen to it .I lived through the punk era and can say that the Jam rank up there with groups like the Pistols , Ramones ,Buzzcocks,Dickies .And as for the late 80s stuff the jam were a group from the late 70s , so please if your gonna post a comment get your facts in order

  • @fireitup9 i dont think Weller would do that

  • If you are a devotee of eighties' music, then check out the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman

  • @KyKy1997Ere well nicki minaj is shit, and so is every "singer" in the charts to this day.

  • @RediffusionMusic I agree. It's not that music of today is shit, it's that the music in the charts is. Talent is slept on and bullshit is bought by millions these days, it's weird. This x-factor shite isn't talent, it's aload of bullshit.

  • @Hydro2oo9 I couldn't agree more :) especially about X Factor.

  • @RediffusionMusic WATCH OUT! There's this 40-Year-Old guy, abusing kids for liking Decent music. Just own his ass in an Arguement, And he'll come right-Back

  • i want the jam back,i want my scooter back,i want the english way of life back, just like how it was before the immigrant infestation arrived!

  • @coojay666 Fuck you.

  • @coojay666

Too right, this just tears my heart out!

  • @coojay666

Too right, this just tears my heart out!

  • So are the lyrics "surrender to the beat, surrender" with 'surrender' functioning as a verb in both cases, or is it "surrender to the beat surrender" with 'beat surrender' functioning as a noun phrase?

  • @DoctorBohr

that is "succumb to the beat surrender", not 'surrender'. Sorry

  • no the final bit is this;

Wake me up with your amphetamine blast

Take me by the collar and throw me out into the world

Rock me gently & send me dreaming of something tender

I was brought here to pay homage to the beat surrender

  • love this song

  • And now folks, you are about to find out what PW sings on the fade out....."Wake me up with an amphetamine blast, grab me by the collar, throw me out into the world, Rock me gently, send me dreaming soft and tender I am yours and will always be beholden to you, beat surrender".

    With thanks to Becky R....

  • @spikepedestal

Have you tried singing it to what he's saying? It don't match.

  • @whozituseit

I must disagree....I think it does. Namaste.

  • last single..did it get numbr 1..great lyrics that seems to reflect the end....

  • Saw Bruce Foxton's band recently - literally called Not The Jam... bloody good they were though. Not the same obviously, but a great gig nonetheless. Classic tunage :)

  • Saw them at the wembley arena for their farewell tour. One of the best experiences I had. Very emotional. Paul Weller has kept his word about never reforming the Jam unlike many of the has been penny pinching capitalist groups from the 80`s. The very reason the Jam split in the first place.

  • makes you sad cause its the last track recorded...or maybe the bitterest pill

  • I can recall the first time this song came out over 20 years ago, thing is over 20 years later it still sounds great.

  • This song was apparently Number One the day I was born, way back in 82. So two good things happened on that day! The Jam rock!

  • @InsomniacScott So rare to see a band referred to as a band rather than a 'thing' on the internet, keep it up, I salute you, sir! I am sure the only reason people say, for example, "The Beatles rocks" is because they think it sounds cool. It doesn't, it sounds idiotic. Paul Weller ROCKS, The Jam ROCK, it's easy, let's not allow this stupid trend to continue! Not that it winds me up or anything...

  • I saw Paul Weller live when he was down here in Sydney, the way he does all the Jam songs now are a-fucking-mazing. Time of my life that night. It's still funny to me that all The Jam songs are older than me (19 this year) yet they've had a very powerful influence on my life. I'm glad my folks played this for me as a child.

  • paul weller ought to get his star somewhere.. he has written some of the best songs of the last part ofthe 20th century.. this one is maybe not the best, but , still

  • THE MODFATHER STRIKES AGAIN..... PROPER BRITISH CLASSIC MUSIC

  • I'm an American in Seattle and I had a friend who used to buy every single import EP these guys put out. And one after another, we were just floored by what was on the disc. My friend loved the Jam so much he tried real hard to like Style Council, but I didn't bother. I found a jukebox that had the Bitterest Pill on it, and I must've bought it 100 times. You think this song is going to be a one trick, but fuck what a voice. Figures that one of the best bands ever would stop it early. MISTAKE.

  • reminds me of my first and only true love...if i could turn back time

  • @mountaindew1357 What, the Cher song? Sounds nothing like it!

...I really am sorry but I couldn't resist!

  • @mountaindew1357 We've all been there at some point. It sucks major d***

  • I was devastaded when I found out that this was the last :( What a band!!!!! Love them always xxx

  • oh just class, memories of my youth, just love this song, i can listen to The Jam, for hours, and they still sound better than most of the dross thats around today..

  • @BlondeRocknRoll People who say that normally don't know that much at all about modern music.

  • @LunarEcli , Sorry to disapoint you, but I do listen to and purchase 'Modern Music', I was refering to the dross that is X Factor, auto tune, manufactured crap, and that statement 'modern music,' sounds like something my dad would say, i just meant i prefer to listen to The Jam, because thats my choice .., but thanks for the put down.

  • amazing end

  • I have been homeless for 6 months and tomorrow mommie is letting me back in the house. how dreadful. i love diana!!! white and black magic and maJik, all together killing our ties. i remember the sweet surrender

  • too true ...its a bittersweet memory :-(

  • Sup with his eyes? Is it the picture or is it just me?

  • Wake me up with your amphetamine blast

Take me by the collar and throw me out into the world

Rock me gently & send me dreaming of something tender

I was brought here to pay homage to the beat surrender

  • This song is seriously shit.

  • @BenNCM looooooooooooooooool............you dont kno a thing you poor person you!!!...aww bless!!

  • @BenNCM Care to elaborate?

  • ohhh:))))

  • The Jam are great!! <3 Paul Weller Solo is not good at all! :(

  • I saw the Jam at the Whiskey in Los Angeles in 1977...sigh, they were good.

  • Heard this on Absolute Radio this morning and it's been following me round all day. Brings back a lot of bittersweet memories but at least they went out with another single straight in at the top

  • quality !!!

  • just one of the best, from that opening line.. just quality.. The Jam, at their best.. as they always were..

  • the jam kicks ass. Fuck all this justin bieber american idol bullshit

  • what does this song actually mean?

  • paul wellers a douche.

    jam kicks ass though.

  • @minmi9966 You cunt.

  • @DANNYM35 you nazi. bnp prick.

  • @minmi9966 At least you use capital letters.

  • @DANNYM35 what?

for a member of the master race youre incredibly incoherent.

  • @minmi9966

Well thank you very much :)

  • Listen to that horn arrangement. What were these guys -- or the producer -- channeling? Mowtown? Amazing synthesis of hard rock and gospel-flecked anthem.

  • Alot of The Jam's last songs sound like The Style Council, like this. Anyone agree?

  • Trust me kbcmightym Its about blue collar, working class. Blacks asians we all got fucked and all love being British. I click on this link when i need to dance my head off, remember my youth and forget about the bullshit for 5 minutes.

  • Trust me kbcmighty, its about blue collar, working class, end of. Its no different for blacks, asians or anyone. We all got fucked and we all love being British. I click on this link when i need to dance my head off, remember my youth and forget about the bullshit for 5 minutes.

  • lalalalalalalalalalal-put on your Frankenstein shoes...

  • good old "jam" orig brit pop up the "mods"

  • Wake me up with your amphetamine blast

Take me by the collar and throw me out into the world

Rock me gently & send me dreaming of something tender

I was brought here to pay homage to the.............

  • Was in my late teens at the height of the mod revival led by The Jam. Had the same English teacher as PW. Reminds me of long ago days in Bracknell. Drinking, fighting and loving ! Living a shit life in a new town, being scarred for life by that bitch Thatcher. The Jam really connected with white working class kids with absolutely nothing to llook forward to. LKearning a few cords on a guitar in their bedrooms and dreaming of a better life.

  • Lot of the same goin' on now mate...except red wedge has gone....thatcher allowed the workin class to get into debt in the guise of freedom of choice to fuck a'body mate! Now the kids of those in debt think there on a brave new world cos of cheap uni....theres f all left to do

theres no gonny be a graduate job fir abody!

  • Tell me about it... I am due to graduate this year and the jobs are scarce... and this is nursing im talking about..!!!

  • @tes74 bugger me really?? just got out of hospital and god bless nurses but theres not one to be found

  • @dexterccf2 Yip.. thats me qualified... but still cant get a job... :D ... its hard enough to even get an interview.... still at least ....Ive had This is England 86 to occupy me these last 4 weeks,,, im buggered now!! :D

  • it wasnt just thatcher , the left turned into a bunch of politically correct, middle class wankers who were totally out of touch with blue collar , white , working class young men and totally lost them . The Jam and the Specials did much more to connect than any bunch of tossers in wooly jumpers . And im still a leftie and an old mod, just not a pc one .

  • @bucketfiscotland ARE YOU FROM SCOTLAND?

    XXX JULIA

  • Pure class...

    Paul Weller is so talented.

  • An absolute classic been with me ever since i was learning to walk and before i was born and still with me to this day! Long live the Jam

  • Classic tune, Classic Band... The Jam, gone but not forgotten !

  • Come on Boy! Come on Girl! Succumb to the Beat Surrender!

  • brilliant!

  • GOIN TO SEE PAUL ON THE 30TH SHIT HOT

  • knob as in you jacques isnt spelt nob you knob your parents knew the day you were born you would be a nonce hence your fucked up name go listen to your m jackson collection pedo boy

  • Brilliant !!! My two favourite Jam albums have to be all mod cons and sound effects...oh shit, I love em all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanfully saw them live and got to meet them afterwards.

  • the jam,

    in with a shout

    out with a atomic blast

between that it beat everything in its way

what a song, what a band

  • this tune made me a fan a long time ago, have since bought everything i could get my hands on!!

  • i tell you what mate why dont you fuck off. no one listening to the best band of all time want to listen to you talking shit. so fuck off. long live the mods!!!!

  • Even if they don't reform the Jam lives forever!!! WE ARE THE MODS!!!

  • god l remember dancin to this in the youth club in the 80s

  • Passion... pure passion!

  • sounds like bowie

  • @freddybonbon

    yeah...especially on the bridge

  • Reminds me of crazy parties, girls in short skirts, ,raging hormones.....and pushing scooters in the rain

  • Best song ever

  • they will never reform-sorry! Paul Weller pretty much spits at anyone who dares suggest it. bad blood and he wants to leave it well and truly in the past. Sort of keeps it special that way anyway....

  • This song is so good it hurt alittle...great vocals and of course sick bass....The jam are beasts

  • that pleasure an pain thing innit!!! understand completely

  • WHY this song makes me sad? THE JAM broke up when i was 5yo, and like in the u.s.a, THE JAM was not popular in puerto rico where i am from. anyways, i discovered THE JAM in 1993, and this song makes me sad because this was the last song...they left WITH A BANG, A BIG BANG! i am NOT saying goodbye to the boys...i still have hopes that they will get back together for all of us...

    THE JAM FOREVER...

    cleveland, ohio

  • this song does have a sad beat to it.

  • i was 16 when the jam split and i still live in hope they will get back together(but i'm not holding my breath LOL)...paul had also wrote a solid bond (in your heart) at this time but decided beat surrender would be the jams last song,i've always wished a solid bond would have been the jams farewell offering..

  • I might be wrong (I'd have to look and I'm too lazy) but I think there is a demo version of Solid Bond done by the Jam - it's either on the rarities cd or the box set if memory serves...

  • The Jam split up leaving a bunch of great records and not a single bad one. They put out more product in five years than most release in twelve. I was disappointed when they split, but I own every record they released unlike REM or U2 ( both great bands) who I rarely bought anything they have done in the 90's or recently. Good for you finding the Jam in Puerto Rico. I lived in a small southern US town and had to drive to the city 3 hours away just to find a decent record store.

  • awesome song!

  • Gordywilson, I was at that gig too. It was my first ever gig. I was very young at the time and my brother took me. Loved it - this tune is a classic

  • cool was my second jam concert lucky me this song has such a great northern soul feel about it

  • I lived thru the MOD ear..only I was living in Australia...let me just tell ya, f**king great music but a tad dangerous...for some reason this music & what is represented was very threatening at the time...

    & so it was... :)))

But we still succumed to the beaT surrender!

  • End of a beautiful era , still hurts today , to me great goodbye record . Great to live through those times . The only contempary band that ever really touched me . Thanks For Posting . john

  • The Jam died young, but they left a beautiful corpse.

  • TOTALLY AGREE WITH U MAINSTREET

  • Great music from a Better Time. Wish we could all go back. Today's society sucks.

  • this always reminds me of being a teenager at the glasgow apollo on the beat surrender tour we where totally gutted they split they played in the city last then my favourite band ever where gone was an unreal atmosphere

  • such a sad song - ive loved it for years

  • top mod revival soul stomper as only this band could do in the modern era, this song also makes me very very sad.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm only 17 and i want this mod scene to re apear i really think i was born in the wrong year.

These, style concil and the weller are just inspiration to me.

Seeing Weller live was amzing at the Apollo.....When with the old man wouldn't of gone with anyone else.

He is the reason i love him and the jam to detah.

    .x.

  • same as you squeaky.....im now almost 42 and this song still brings a tear to my eyes...always has and always will

  • We're all still young... well actually...... i am ..im 6 years younger than you so you're on your own auld thing.... :P

  • when the jam broke up it was on itv News at Ten , people my age from england will understand how important a band they were to make it to national news when they broke up!!

  • great swansong........who knows what could have been....

  • im heading into town now in search of a new jam cd all my old ones have broke now:'(:(:(:(

  • i'm not a fan of weller nor the style council

    the jam defines paul weller

it's a same the mod scene has gone :(

  • Ditto... i love the Jam but weller as a solo artist not so keen on.. i like one or two style council songs but not enough to make me buy a CD of them... Thanks for the comment :D

  • @tes74 i agree i find wellers solo stuff a bit stodgy

  • @tes74 Weller is a enormous artist and composer, fortunately there has been life beyond style council, and, that's my opinnion, near every album weller made solo is better than the earlier, and well, in this particular song style you see later on a lot of style councils, like shout to the top or so, real soul....

  • I cried when The Jam broke up, so I love this song but it's also bittersweet, you're right! GREAT band, the Jam, none like them ever since

  • So glad someone finally seems to love this song for the reason i do too... thank you for your comment :D

  • i know that feeling, i did the same squeaky, and this song still brings a tear to my eyes now and im almost 42 but still a massive Jam fan

  • I loved the jam and I am still a fan of Mr Weller... I loved this song.

  • Thanks for your comment :D

  • Decent band, great song.

  • GREAT band, great song :P

  • I Love the 80's I didn't know about this song until i brought, 80's Forever disc 3 Track 6 I think XD.

    Great song! the Jam

    Legends.
