  • like saving private ryan

  • good but why air rifles ?

  • great video

  • 2 words - WOW AMAZING :D

  • Yes this is cool but... Whats with the weapons? Totally those are not M1 Carbines. Where the mag? And whats with the MGs? Are those supposed to be M60s with scopes? They should be MG42s if this is on a Normandy Theater.

  • 0:08 lol Saving Private Ryan

  • thx

  • maaaaan ...you need to make movies :D

  • @NarrowKilla You can check out another movie made by the same crew called Arms Race. Search for 'arms race steampunk' and you should find it.

  • british?

  • this looks great except that the guy in the start who gets shot in the head does not look like he belongs in the scene behind him.

  • hmm.. now im not an expert but I am almost 150% sure that Omaha was an AMERICAN beach. But I suppose this video proves that miss-conception wrong! Alert the world newspapers. Weve all fucked up our facts!

  • @muserock2367 This has already been pointed out several times. :) The video itself isn't supposed to be Omaha - the title references Omaha as it's that kind of setting that people want to recreate with their filmmaking, as seen in Saving Private Ryan.

  • @fxhome please can you put a tutorial up on theheadshot

me and some friends are witing a cold war movie and we were stuck on how to use blood and gore

is this effect in the gore software dvd you can buy??

    thanks!

  • @fxhome I will accept this comment as it was neither rude or immature. A lesson for most people on youtube can be learn't here. This is how replies should be composed and should not contain four letter words beginning with F or C. In saying that I left a comment earlier that broke all these rules. Oops!

  • @muserock2367 shut the fuck up you fucking mong i know but who cares

  • @muserock2367

sorry that was my freind :D

  • @msigt740 its all good

  • Wasn't Omaha beach the American beach, and I can't take my videos out of fx home

  • huge fail! it was americans who invaded omaha beach, im not saying that there werent any british, but most of them werent on the actual assault. Before the first waves british launched a special commando team to sabotage or whatever i dunno.

  • @errorcoder The short itself was never intended to depict Omaha beach specifically. However, because we thought this would be of interest to people trying to recreate Saving Private Ryan's beach landing sequence the YouTube entry was given the 'Omaha Beach Assault' title.

  • Dear " fxhome "

Hey guys I really enjoy your videos. However, being that I am a BEGINNER using FXHOME, it would help me out a lot if you could PLEASE SHOW STEP BY STEP HOW TO CREATE FX effects. From shooting them to editing using the SPECIAL SOFTWARE ON THE COMPUTER,,''

    THANK YOU :O)

FLYBY7A - VERY VERY VERY VERYYYYYYYYYYYY AND EXTREMELY Amateur film maker...

  • @flyby7a Hey flyby, that's what these tutorial DVDs are for. You can purchase them from the FXhome website. We also have a wide range of free tutorials here on YouTube, and some more tutes can be found in the Tutorials forum at FXhome.

  • 0:09

    Looks like wayne rooney

    Looooooooooooooooolz

  • why do the soldiers have british uniforms it was America that took on omha beach

  • I really can't fiend how to do it !! lol

  • All it needed was music, and it would have been perfect.

  • Wow you did a great job...You should make the whole beach invasion...you did good...My dad was in the 1st infantry and I remember him telling me stories of that day..He landed on Omaha Beach..I loved to hear them when I was a little girl..of course all little girls think their daddy's are the best (smile) so when I see this kind of stuff I think back about my dad wondering why some died and others lived..it bothered him his whole life..He said he lost good friends that day.

  • @littleshadowful Thanks for the kind comments. People like your dad are why we have the freedoms we do today, so you should be proud!

  • Yo one question how do you download fxpresents to your fxhome

  • @AJohnDiazProduction Check out the Support section over at FXhome, there's a knowledgebase article specifically about this.

  • @fxhome it work thanx man.

  • OK. so i understand how you did everything but having all of those people in one shot with one actor. did you just cut a mask out around them or just use say, a garbage mat and take chunks of the entire scene?

  • @shockhawk It depended in the shot, but generally it was just about rotoscoping some masks so that the right bit of each take was visible. Relatively simple, if a bit time consuming.

  • That is fricken awesome!!!

    Great work 5/5

  • I love it. I just recently got the software running, but unfortunately I don't get allowance so I have no money for guns and uniforms and the like. Any suggestions?

  • A lot of the stuff in this we actually just borrowed from friends and family - it helped that we only had a single actor, so only needed 1 costume and 1 weapon.

Are there are war re-enactment societies or theatres near you? They might be willing to lend you stuff - or even act in your movie.

A friend of ours, director Ashley Wing, managed to 'borrow' and actual fully operational tank for a WW2 movie he made, so anything is possible. :)

    Good luck!

  • Thanks. i live in New York, so my choices are pretty limited. And I'm only a teenager so i have a hard time getting actors. Thanks for the help, though!

  • I'm hoping to shoot a documentary film with a £40,000 budget. This might sound like a lot but my creativity will pushed to the limits because the story is about a surgeon in Grozny who remained behind while his colleagues fled to neighbouring countries when their country came under attack by the Russians. I want to stage some war scenes. Would it be possible to superimpose footage of delerict war torn grozny buildings with scenes that will film in this country.

  • Yeah, that's entirely doable, although the difficulty depends on the specifics of each shot.

The bunker and obstructions on the beach were composited in this clip; compositing buildings would be the same general techique.

  • Oh, and I forgot to say: Good luck!

  • Nice job in showing what you can do with little to no budget. I do have a suggestion for the blown off leg part. I am aware that you used a green stocking to edit out the leg. perhaps next time you could buy some meat at a grocery store and mash it up then attack it to the clothing of the green stocking. I'm not sure if it will make it look any more realistic I haven't tried it yet myself :)

  • Yeah, good idea! A little gore around the stump would definitely have helped, I agree.

  • 2 Part were Similar from saving Private ryan..but honestly this is really good for cheap filmmakers i have visionlab it works like a charm

  • Thanks! We tend to make our promo stuff on pretty much zero budgets, so that we're using the same kind of tools as filmmakers that are just starting out.

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!

I really need to convince my dad to get me the softwere because its soooo good! i actually tried the demo out before my old comp internals died

    fantastic stuff

  • I got this software recently and i have to say it is the most effective way edit my videos! Everybody says that Adobe After Effects is better but it truly is not, this software has a much better interface and i think that it is much more effective. :)

  • Thanks watertower! AE is a great program too, but our stuff is designed to do quite different things. Plus the prices are quite dissimilar, of course. :)

  • The effects are great but the actual video is not realistic. Bullets could easily go through a helmet and head. Great work though :)

  • Maybe it was a glancing ricochet? :) Point taken, though. If we do a war clip again in the future we're going to have to pay more attention to accuracy!

    Thanks for the kind comments.

  • I have a question...I have a high quality camera and when I import a video on here The quality lowers WAY DOWN and the video speeds up or slows down and sometimes it happens at the same time between points?? help?

  • Sounds like your project settings are incorrect. Please head over to the support section of the FXhome website for technical queries. Thanks!

  • American forces land on Omaha beach not the British who were on Gold, Juno and Sword !

  • @fzapos

    you forgot Utah

  • I do not mean to offend but this looked somewhat amatuer as good as it did look. is this the best of this programs ability or is this just to show you what you can do quickly/what amatuers can do?

  • This was created as an example of what anyone can do on a zero budget, to accompany a tutorial DVD.

Can you be more specific about what you didn't like about it?

  • sure! ok lets start dont get me wrong it looks really nice and saving private ryan-esque but somethings like the way the explosions were a bit colorless and really see through, and small things like that i guess you could just call it nit-picking :p

  • Cool, thanks for the feedback. We'll work on improving our explosions in future stuff. :D

  • fxhome, were all the explosions and gunshots made in your program? or is some of that stock footage?

  • It's a mixture of stock and CG stuff. Generally we find that using a mixture of techniques gets the best results.

  • saving private ryan!!! lol

  • are they planning on lowering the price anytime soon cus i really wanna get rid of the water mark

  • When i make video with muzzle flash. Do i need to set the sound effects on? Or does every muzzle flash have a Sound? But when i save the clip (OR render it) it wont be any sound effect when i shot. But in the other videos i watch on youtube they have sound effect exactly When the muzzle flash comes on a machine gun. PLease help!

  • You need to do your sound effects in your main editing program. The Lab products don't include sound editing features.

  • oh... Okey:)i know that this sounds wierd but can you watch my fxhome visionlab studio film? please comment and tell me what i need to do better! please i love to edit videos so please watch my video and comment what i need to do better. But you dont need to if you dont want.

    Thanks:D

  • hey can i do this with effects lab? or do i have to have composite lab? or do i need both

  • For the 'cloning' and compositing effects you'll need CompositeLab, but the muzzle flash and explosion stuff you can do with EffectsLab.

  • FXHome you are AMAZING

  • bigest fail with leg but cool vid steal

  • what camera was used for this?

  • It was shot on an Panasonic HVX-200 at 720P (although it was later down-rezzed to DVD res).

  • question, what is compositing exactly?

  • It's the technique of combining several items to create a new item. In this context, combining images, video and CG effects to creat a new shot.

Check out 'compositing' on Wkipedia for more. :)

  • how did you make him missing a leg

  • He wore a green stocking on that part of his leg, so we then removed it like we did with the normal greenscreens.

  • thanks i never would of thought of that

  • can i download it free?

  • the sound effects need to be more intense

  • Does it work with windows movie maker plz................. answer

  • It's best to ask questions at the FXhome website or by emailing us direct rather than asking on YouTube. :)

The Lab products work with any other video product that can import and export either AVI or MOV video files.

  • windows movie maker is a bad program but you can download freeware that can do most of this.

  • does it work with windows movie maker?

  • Comment removed

  • is the missing leg one of the effects you can do?

  • Yeah, that was a composite effect.

  • is that helmet thing in some movie where it saves him he takes it off then gets killed. cuz i swear ive seen that before

  • Yup, it's our little homage to Saving Private Ryan. :)

  • I dont know if anyone pointed this out! But the German nazi was using a modern American SAW weapon! lol. Very innacurate but enjoyable to watch!.

  • Yes, it's been established that the historical accuracy in this leaves something to be desired. :)

Sorry about that - we'll pay more attention to that side of things next time!

  • is that bunker real of is it an effect?

  • It's a composited matte painting. :) The metal girders on the beach and the barbed wire on the clifftop are all composited as well, and we only used 1 actor.

  • what i like about this is british kit not yanky kit :D

  • Did this use stock footage from the buyable collection on your website? I am most curious about the headshot after the man takes of his helmet. It looked to real to be generated using the particle engine.

Besides that, superb visuals, a nice display of the power behind the fxhome products.

  • Thanks, jabba.

This does indeed make extensive use of the stock footage we sell. Main packs used, I think, were the 'Dust', 'Gore' and 'Blood' packs. The headshot uses the last two, plus a little bit of particle effect.

  • it was "mk" lol

  • his foot was off

  • this is pretty good but the coloring looks weird. It should have been given a desaturated look 50percent black and white

  • It is quite heavily desaturated already - the sand, for example, was very yellow originally.

  • ok although it was historically innacurate it was still well done!

  • Thanks. :)

Next time we'll definitely pay more attention to the accuracy!

  • sick!

  • i see 3 things wrong with this but it is still KINDA good. 1)British? 2) needs more ppl and 3)it has some Saving Private Ryan scenes..... Hell this might be an attempt to make one

  • As discussed earlier in comments, historical realism unfortunately wasn't something we could afford. :)

Definitely could have used more people, but then the film was part of a tutorial demonstrating how you can do quite a lot with just a single actor.

  • i thought the americans invaded omaha not the british

  • See earlier comments. :)

  • There was a large collection of Americans, British, Austrailians, and probibly others all in groups to invade different areas of the beach.

  • no (I can't believe these idiots) the british went to gold, and sword beaches. the canadians went to Juno beach. and the americans went to Utah and Omaha beach(a part of omaha beach was point du hoc just if you say "but point du hoc is a beach i played in call of duty 2").

  • the guy in it bears a striking resembelance to Jason Statham!!!!

  • Hehe, Chris will no doubt be pleased to hear that. :P

  • Weird, right after I read this comment, there was a Jason Statham video on Youtube's front page

  • Alright well, this is really confusing. Almost all of the fxhome tests on YouTube look like complete crap, but the ones on their website are pretty amazing. Not Hollywood, but still better than usual. What I'm wondering is, if you're a more advanced user who knows this stuff pretty well, can you pretty easily make effects like those in fxhome's actual test videos?

  • Yeah, we're not doing anything to 'cheat' the results, it's just that we know the software well.

As with any tool (software or otherwise), the quality of the results is more down to the user than the tool itself.

  • I checked the website, and those blood splatters look really cool! Just wondering though, if they come with the wound effects themselves, or if there's a way to make the wounds useing downloadable presets from the fx home site?

  • Some clips include elements that work as wounds, some are just the splashes/squibs/etc. Depends on what you need for your shot as to how appropriate the clips will be.

  • Where did you get the digital bullet hole? Did you download it from fxhome website? I'd like to use something like that for an upcoming short film. Thanks, man

  • We'll be releasing some stock footage at FXhome soon, including the blood/gore used in the beach landing short film. Keep an eye out for it over the next week.

  • Just to note that the stock footage packs are now available in the FXhome store.

  • Was the bullet hole in the guys head made with prosthetics? Or was it created digitally, with NC cinema?

  • The headshot is entirely digital.

  • i think fxhome is better than after effects in a way

  • Is the blood from his head off of Visionlab?

  • No its off NC cinema

  • Yeah, it's blood stock from NoControl Cinema, composited using VisionLab Studio.

  • Hey I think your programs are awesome, but where do you get NC cinema and is it free?

  • It's not free, no. All of the stock footage can now be purchased from the FXhome website store.

  • This is the best green screen keying i have ever screen in a short film! truly amazing!!!

  • Thanks!

  • Erm...omaha beach was american. These men are british.Only judging by there uniforms.

  • Correct.

  • Then why call it omaha?Call it sword or juno or somthing of sorts.

  • It was called 'Omaha Beach Assault' because the whole point of it was to get as close to what's seen in Saving Private Ryan as possible, on a micro budget.

An unfortunate side effect of that micro budget is that historical accuracy wasn't something we were able to pursue, as discussed elsewhere in these comments.

It's more about the styling and presentation.

  • the part where he takes his helmet off and then gets shot in the head you stole from saving private ryan

  • Yup. And you know what, I think Saving Private Ryan might have stolen it from Real Life!

Saving Private Ryan is the best portrayal of the event ever put on film, so anything portraying a generic 'beach landing' is inevitably going to look pretty similar.

This sequence was part of a tutorial DVD showing you how to create your own 'beach landing', so evoking memories of classic films is no bad thing.

The framing and context of this shot is still very different to the equivalent in SPR, though.

  • yes plus i dont think you can really copywright a guy getting shot in the face. Therefore it aint stealing. Its just taking what actually happened from real life/

  • Where did you get your stock footage from?

  • All the stock is from No Control Cinema. A compilation of their work can also be found in the FXhome store.

  • when you make this beach scene does it look just as good as the one you did and what program do i need to buy to make this cool effect

  • If you make a similar beach scene its quality will depend on your own filmmaking and post-production skills. It's entirely possible that you could come up with something even better if you have the time. :)

I used VisionLab Studio to create this. More info over at the FXhome website.

  • Do they have fx home for the Vista????

  • Yup, all our products work fine in Vista.

  • how much does is cost????

  • Which product? We have many. I'd recommend going to the FXhome website, as you can find out all the information you need there.

  • which one are they using for this video

  • We used VisionLab Studio.

  • can i just point out an error made in most effects tests.

the explosions have no scarring on the ground. an explosion leaves a small crator, or at least a mark on the ground.

to do this, you need to have some green screen on the ground, lay the explosive with dirt on top of it, now place a green 'blanket' over the dirt, but with a star shape cut into the blanket, so when the explosive is detonated, the green flaps are blown outwards, revealing a little dirt crator.

  • We did want to include impact marks, but didn't have the time to do so, alas.

The greenscreen technique sounds a little over-complex, though. It would generally be easier, certainly in our case, to simply composite in the impact marks, either with a matte painting or using an 'after' dressed version of the location.

We didn't actually have any real pyro stunts on the location, every single explosion is composited, so the detonating green blanket technique would have been quite tricky to do.

  • Actualy, just digitally add a black mark and decrease the transparencey a bit...

  • i have a question. i already have effects lab pro. could i buy composite lab and the tutorial for the beach assualt rather than buying the whole vision lab bundle?

  • Yes, you can purchase CompositeLab Pro and the Beach Landing DVD separately from the FXhome online store.

  • when you get the free trial the effects dont look that good but when you buy the full version are they really good or just the same and do you get more effects with the full version?

  • I could have the exact same tools as a master builder, but it doesn't mean I could build a house straight away. You need experience and skills first.

The beach sequence was created using the same features found in the free trial. The full version doesn't have anything more. The only difference is that the user was experienced with the tools.

You can do cool stuff straight away, but there is a learning curve, as with all visual effects. Anyone can do it with time and effort, though.

  • that was pretty good, except the fact that they're wearing british equipment and it's the same guy

  • British did have some slight involvement in the D-Day landings you know. Try watching The Longest Day not Saving PVT Ryan.

I think the M60 or M249 used by the German is more of a problem.

Great video though this shows what you can do with a few people hence the same guy over and over but maybe he just had 7 brothers LOL.

  • OK just looked at title point taken Omaha Beach LOL!

  • how do you make the ships in the background?? could you make a tutorial for that?? and the headshot!!

  • Ohama was an American beach the only beaches America were on was Ohama and Utah. The Canadians were on Juno and the British were on Sword and Gold.

  • brought me to tears

  • I think it was good, but suggest changing the title as there were no British soldiers at Omaha beach.

  • The rifle and the ships in the background aren't exactly historically accurate either, I'm afraid. :)

  • Spielberg would be proud.

  • grading needed some work. great though

  • Thanks for the feedback, what would you suggest?

  • well, for example, at shots like 0:30, I think you did a great job with the darkness, its kind of like in Saving private ryan. But the beach, besides the runners, looks quite calm. The next shot, of the soldier getting up, is very smoky, resulting in different shot amtosphers. But, I'm assuming that this movie wasn't part of a full feature, so small things like that didn't matter. It was great though,

  • WOW. I preordered it already. I am so excited I CANT WAIT. I will need this for a world war 1 project for school THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RELEASING THIS GUYS.

  • You should be exited. It's a great program.

  • ...the amount of my excitement is uncmprhensive.

  • rendering takes time ..why?

  • because the computer will need to process every frame! (25 or 29,97 frames/second)
