@taurusgirl65 The original story suggests this is the case but IMO the cartoon makes it pretty clear that the HH is a supernatural entity with gags like the one at 5:14.
Guys notice that the Legend of the Sleepy Hallow scene here is very heavy on Blue. Well, remember back then, VHS transfers were very dark and not in full color back then, and if they did the early 80's transfer, you wouldn't see a thing as some scenes would be almost black, and they went heavy on blue in the transfer so that you can see it better.
@scottof83 I'm pretty sure all of the cartoons used in this special used old television masters, which often had some weird color casts (probably to help it show up better on black & white sets).
I rented this at the video store when I was six years old. I used to be so scared of the Headless Horseman. My mother recalled my face turning so pale when this segment came on LOL xD. This stuff is like nothing!
Anyways, I know this sounds ridiculously childish but Night on Bald Mountain still is just a little bit creepy to me, even after seeing lots of gruesome horror movies (ex. The Shining). The funny part is that it didn't even give off a creepy vibe when I was six! Odd...
This cartoon had atmosphere! There are live action movies out there that don't achieve what this does. The clop-clopping of Ichabod's horse along that nightmare road, passing through gnarled old trees. Maybe Tim Burton had his start with cartoons, because his movie feels like this.
@chainbluelightning1 You must not be aware that Burton got his start at Disney. wiki says he worked as concept artist for The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron(!).
@chainbluelightning1 Well, his movie, Sleepy Hollow, threw in a reference to the forest, with Ichabod hearing some frogs saying, "Ichabod," just like in this.
@chainbluelightning1 I think you'd be surprised to hear that he did an adaptation of Sleepy Hollow with a reference to the forest scene in there at the bridge scene in there when Ichabod hears the frogs saying his name.
@spiritgirl41192 That's true. I need to watch that movie again. Nobody beats Burton when it comes to Sleepy Hollow or Batman. Now if only he would make a movie combining those two worlds. The Dark Knight battles the Headless Horseman while poor old Ichabod comes face to face with the Joker. Ah, a guy can dream, can't he?
@chainbluelightning1 Oh, I know. I think the only version of the Joker Ichabod would be scared of is the Heath Ledger one. He'd be scared shitless with the line, 'Why so serious?'
@ Xenos Yeah -- there's a theory that Brod told Ichabod that story, then took his horse, put on a costume, and rid out, keeping his head in. Even if someone looked down the collar, it wouldn't look like there was anything there, since Brod's black hair would blend in.
I don't personally believe this theory though, for two reasons: The horse of the horseman has red eyes, not likely an eyecolor for normal horses, and it would be very difficult to steer if you couldn't see outside your collar.
you're right, and I don't recall the talking pumpkin in the version I grew up with either. I remember the evil queen's magic mirror narrating. through part of it. Apparently they changed it sometime in the late 80's.
I figured it out. The version I remember is actualy "A disney Halloween" he has it on here too, despite the actual title difference, they still use the Disney Halloween Treat song and intro animation. Hence the confusion.
No Krisathelas, many of us grew up with it too, TG for the Internet... Night on Bald Mountain will always be my fav, uncompromisingly sinister and very appropriate for halloween
THANK YOU! I thought I was the only soul left that remembered Disney's Halloween Treat. Donald and the ape, and this clip were my all time favorites as a kid. :)

Oh well, if they can't feature Maleficent, then I'll be making my own version of Disney's Halloween Treat that will feature Maleficent. I'm also gonna add Shere Khan from the Jungle Book and Sharptooth from the Land Before Time after the Queen and before the Siamese Cats.
Nothing personifies Halloween better than The Legend of Sleepy Hollow! The Headless Horseman is an awesome villian, and that story remains creepy and timeless!
"Don't let your imagination run away with you. After all, it's only Halloween. The spookiest night of the year." Oh that line sends shivers up my spine as if someone or something is watching me.
The ghosts popping up and down is a ride. The Ghosts coming out of the gravestones in the animated one are from the Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia.
In the outro song, there are clips of something that's not in the special, where the hand raised up the coffin lid, and the creatures popped up from behind tombstones, what is that from?
This really takes me back to when I was young, thanks for posting this!
because as sad as it is Disney has lost its touch and all their profits are focused on crappy show like High School Musical and whatever else they have now on the Disney channel
Now, now, I'm pretty sure there a couple good shows there.
However, they show more series shows, then show features.
I would like them to make another channell
"Disney channell classic, that includes what we used to see on disney back in the days, including cartoon features ,like snow white, cinderella, hercules, the series of adventures in wonderland etc. Including good ol' holiday shows, like this one for example.

Some of the old movies of which I've watched, I've seen them at least five times each, and even now, I can think of searching up old cartoons.... It's amazing how the old movies are so... so.... timeless is the only way to put it.
What are the odds Brom was the Horseman trying to get Ichabod out of town.
