Could anyone explain to me how Sondheim got so popular? Absolutely none of the music composed by him that I have heard goes anywhere, this terribly boring song is no exception.
It's good, I just think the accent ruins it a little bit. There has to be a sexual traction between Dot and George, but some people play George so that you don't understand why she is with him.
I'm sorry. this guy is a charlatan. jesus, all that prissy breathing. normally I wouldn't bitch but he's panting all over one of the greatest songs in history
Daniel Evans live was just incredible. his voice is perfect for this role. and as much as i love Mandy in this role, i didn't hear or miss him in this rendition. this was "state of the art" all by itself. hey! like the original!
As with many British actors, his diction is wonderful (if not a little TOO clear), and he's breathing properly from the diaphragm... but it is not introverted and personal enough. This isn't a "Hey, audience!" song.
Evans is great, but Mandy Patinkin made "Finishing the Hat" a private and memorable moment.
@sophshaw-Hi, I also saw the West End performance and still prefer Mandy. I just feel (as someone else commented) he has more detatchment, other wordly tortured genius about him. Especially in this song. Sigh, to be able to go to a gala perormance where mandy and Bernadette were performing would be a tick on my wish list!
@banthonywhite Not just you. I said exactly the same thing when I first heard this song. But then, when you've had as long a career as SS, you have to expect a little recycling.
In my humble opinion, no-one could ever aspire to reach the dizzying heights that Mandy achieved in this role. He is perfect. Total genuine raw emotion, angst, genius personified. You could say I quite like him...lol
@bazandpete - I agree that Mandy Patinkin is absolutely incredible, but I saw this performance twice in the West End of London, where it originated and it was absolutely jaw-dropping. Had me in floods of tears both times. Daniel Evans was extraordinary.
I have to say I'm not crazy about Daniel -- He doesn't play the part as detached or obsessed with his work, and that's basically what George was. Mandy Patinkin will forever be Georges Seurat in my eyes, but nevertheless Daniel has a wonderful voice.
You can tell that, at least vocally, his performance is inspired a bit by Mandy. It's tough to get out of the mold of such a revolution performance as Mandy's.
Having seen this both in London and New York, I think it's interesting how the whole show was made bigger for Broadway - both the leads play their parts as more extroverted. Also, it's strange seeing Daniel Evans sing that song with a close up. Nice, but strange. He's fantastic as Georges.
This is my favorite show. But I prefer the original performance---Mr. Evans seems to come from school of . . . ACTING!! And that bothered me a little. Also, don't knock In the Heights for the rap element. You can write as much art into rap as you can into other lyrics (not that it's done much).
To all of you bashing "In the Heights" because "Sunday..." didn't win-- they were up in two DIFFERENT categories.. the only ones that would have been were the acting categories, which IN THE HEIGHTS did NOT win.. so I do not understand why all this hating towards the IN THE HEIGHTS people..
I cried when South Pacific won Best Revival! Sunday in the Park did something NEW and it got nothing! =[ Plus, I'm a huge Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell fangirl. {Glad Patti LuPone won, though, because I LOVE her too.}
I was so mad. They were totally ROBBED of Tonys! This is my favorite musical. I've never been so moved by a musical. And I have listened to and seen MANY musicals.
Dude, I completely agree. Him and Jenna so deserved more recognition for their excellence, and not to mention this Sondheim piece is one of the most moving and touching plays ever. That stupid "In the Heights" should have surrendered its award to this brilliant work of art that we may never see again.
Well, see I love Patti, and it's about time she won something again, but Jenna and Daniel did a fantastic job. I don't see how some stupid rapping "In the Heights" crap could surpass one of the best Sondheim musicals.
Patti's good but I think Jenna diserved that Tony more. I KNOW! I think Xanadu should have one Best Musical. The Tony voters must have been high or something. Um...Dear, Sunday in the Park and In the Heights weren't in the same group....
I still don't see the reason why you're burning "In the Heights". "Sunday in The Park" was created by Stephen Sondheim over twenty years ago! They barely shared any category except for the acting ones (which by the way "Gypsy" deserved to almost sweep). "In the Heights" was new and fresh, "Sunday in the Park With George" was wonderfully artistic and creative. so please don't flame anything until you've seen it.
Daniel yes Jenna, it was close but no. Even if she had done a better job thatn Patti, they still would have given the tony to Patti because they screwed her over last time when she didn't win for sweeney todd. The only reason they gave it to the dude from south pacific is because he's a world renowned opera singer. Oh well SITPWG is and always will be a phenomenaly beautiful musical.
this was broadcast on tv--full title was "Visa Signature's Tony Award Preview Concert" (with I assume a 2008 somewhere in there). Depending on the city you live in, is when it aired. This was captured on June 7.
I actually like his performance, but the skips in the video just ruin the whole thing. Dislike. :(

@PNTBRescued You do realize that this song would've been heard in "On the Steps of the Palace" since this was written before Into the Woods.

Daniel is a beautiful sondheim singer, its almost as if he was a born to sing sondheim, he just brings so much magic to it.
