  • Bayonetta brought me here.

  • Remember when these games used to be the shit? What happened to local arcades we could meet up with friends beat the shit out of each other in street fighter 2 and tekken and other games like that. Kill some mutants in house of the dead 1 and 2. Race each other in Daytona USA and cruisin'. We need arecades back in our lives. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • If u have the megadrive/Genesis ultimate collection this game is on here as an extra

  • I don't like this game but it's still cool that they put this, Afterburner, ansd Outrun in Bayonetta. Afterburner and Space Harrier are put together for some good action.

  • Hoth + 'Ice Age' = Lucasia.

  • This game for microsoft game room

  • From a historical perspective, Space Harrier might be the most advanced game ever released. It's the Wizard of Oz of video games.

  • Remember this game in 3D with the glasses??? 3D glasses in 1985 and it's just in 2009 that the tecnology is now good! ?? i cant believe it when i thing about that!!

  • I still can't figure out how to configure the controls for this game on MAME.

  • If Space Harrier has taught me anything it's that you can run full speed into a bush and walk away with only a scratch, but running into fiery explosions is like walking by a cozy space heater.

  • "Welcome to the fantasy zone. Get ready"! :)

  • "Welcome to the fantasy one. Get ready"! :)

  • CHAOS...

  • "You're doing GREAT!!" that's what I call motivation right there =) I wish more games gave you compliments like that lol

  • @joaovictor1994 your supposed to be confiedent anyway, just keep telling yourself "your doing great, your number 1" at everything you do, not just a video game.

  • Am I alone thinking this is one of the best, most addictive arcade games ever made?

  • Space Harrier was so eco-friendly during the bonus stages...

  • Flying mushrooms, then chasing a dragon . . . nope, no insinuations there.

  • how did you download it?

  • why isnt this on xbla

  • This is so freakin' stony.

  • @Ascyltos Shut up kid you are fucking stupid if you think this is anything like getting stoned

  • @haxor758 Well now you're an uppity little cunt aren't you?

  • @Ascyltos Hey you are what ya eat you dick

  • 0:06 is olev

  • When I was in Czechoslovakia in 1989, I met a girl who was a shop assistant in the grocery shop. There was standing a game machine with "Space Harrier". That girl jumped on the moving armchair during her work break and started to play with it. That was incredible. She was playing with it without any mistake!

  • have been looking for this game

  • The OST is soo much win. D:

  • This is one of the most classic and remarkable arcade games of all time. It defines the genre of "Pseudo 3D-Shmups". It is also available on the Wii's Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points.

  • @xwario

Space Harrier was also probably the first run & gun third-person shooter in history.

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

  • WELCOME TO THE FANTASY ZONE! GET READY! I remember thinking this was Video Game heaven. The music was awesome, the 3D environment was awesome, hearing those voices in the game was awesome. It was an awesome first time experience for me back in the arcade days. Oh, I also loved the thought of being able to run really fast on the ground and to just hover up with the jetpack when I needed to. Can't remember if it was 80s, or early 90s though.

  • One of my Sega favorites! It actually converted me to their consoles!

  • The sound effects drown out the awesome music! Lame!

  • The planet Amar looks like a Mush trip!

  • 4:14 longcat sighting.

  • Can't get my head round how amazing this looked at the time and how crappy it looks now!

  • @markowe

It still looks great IMO, the framerate of the video doesn't do justice to the real experience... play it on an RGB monitor w/60fps and be blown away, even 25 years after the initial hit :)

  • those big stone heads always scared me!

  • and somhow this relates to my mw2 video?

  • Anyone noticed that in main screen is just MS-09 Dom from Gundam but with 3 mono eyes and difrent color? :D

  • back at the time I recall the visual spectacle of this groundbreaking game, but R-type wins for mid-80's classic shooter memories.

  • Welcome to the fantasy zone. Get ready!

  • Sniff. Happy memories.

  • destorying trees? killing harmless flying thingies? this game needs to be reported to PETA and possibly to the envirmental department! haha. :P

  • If he tripped on a low hedge, he said "Ow!"

We used to call the stone heads in level 2 'Easter Island on tour'.

  • this is when games were games.now its about story graphics your sense of humanity blah blah

  • When I was kid this game would always eat up all my quarters at the arcade!!! After watching this video it seems to me the way you can be good at this game is only if you have ADD!!!!!!!!

  • What I like is how the Fantasy Zone in this game is actually just like Fantasy Zone the game.

  • Playing this game always caused me to walk around the mall afterwards, all alert and dodging people like they were going to pwn me.

  • I think he's using turbo. Lol.

  • This game reminds me how fast my childhood was.

  • @redfoxbennaton is that bad?

  • NO it was a awsome game. I\t just gives me memories.

  • It Annoys me the way this guy Plays this game. But i still Love this game

  • @Mahzinemm i do too.

I guess im not the only one~!

  • 32x version is pretty good but the Sat and DC versions are arcade perfect and much smoother than this.

  • Welcome to rhe Fantasy Zone!!!

  • get ready!

  • OMG Flying Tiki headz...z...z..zzz!

  • Coin-Op classic.....Yu Suzuki the daddy of arcade gaming....

  • Bayonetta is so much win

  • Her butt sure is

  • @Psychology word up to dat "fat" shit...

    (see what i did there)

  • Awesome. And this video doesnt even do full justice to how smooth the game really is. For arcade perfection, the Sega Saturn version is the way to go. IMAGINE an xbox live arcade remake of the game at high speeds. It would be mindblowing. Let's hope they make it! (never will)

  • its in sonics ultimate genesis collection as an unlockable extra and it looks really good

  • I like how fast you can move in this version. I'll be getting it on Wii Virtual console soon. Can't wait!

  • this is the future of video games.

    still amazing!!

  • lol my favorite thing to do in shenmue, other than moving boxes with a lift of course

  • and meditating at home.

  • Sega NEEDS to make a new Space Harrier game. They already made Outrun 2 and Afterburner Climax, now all they need is this...

  • Modern gamers simply could not handle the awesome of space harrier, it would make their n00bi5h heads explode as they Q_Q from the awesome of a REAL game.

  • yeah if you cant point and shoot at things then its no good anymore

    arcade games kick ass

  • Bayonetta anyone?

  • haha Thats just what I was thinking!! It was my favorite part of the whole game!! lol I love it when she says "Get Ready!".

  • I see what seems to be moais

  • Didn't the arcade installation have a seat that tilted depending on your direction of movement?

  • Does anyone remember the orginal space harrier that was a green alien man before they changed it to a white blonde haired dude?

I never understood why they changed it 8(

  • You may be confusing Space Harrier with 3-D World Runner for the NES. Developed by Square! Totally ripped off Space Harrier, though they did add their own twist by making it a platformer instead of a shooter. I'm pretty fond of it.

  • Nah it was defintately space harrier. We would go and play it at hunstanton on the coast and you would sit up in this chair that would rock around to the movements on the screen.

One of the few games burned onto my memory because of how awesome it was. Went back 1 year and it was a white blonde dude instead of the green alien

  • the guy controling at the start, looks like Hari's having a seizure as he flys. Brill game though.

  • Welcome to the Fantacy zone, get ready! lol still the first thing you her when you get near a arcade in blackpool :P

  • as a 10 year old, i never made it past ida. that fucker foiled me every time. i have never even heard of revi!

  • Watching this makes me think this is the 32X version, and not the Arcade version, cause i don't remember the arcade version saying more scenes coming soon, but i know the 32X version did. Either way it's still an awesome game, I have the 32x ver., Commodore 64ver. and GBA ver., however the GBA ver. was a bit of a letdown though with the controls and sluggish game play.

  • The arcade actually did say that. I remember because my first contact with Space Harrier was on my Sega Master System, which was awesome, but seeing it on an Arcade machine blew my frickin' mind and elements of it are permanently burned into my memory. :)

  • I guess there are different versions of the Arcade machine, and not talking cabinet wise, cause the one I remember at the local Pizza hut never said it, but my SEGA 32X copy does. BTW the one at my local Pizza Hut was the Stand up cabinet, and not the awesome sit down version.

  • sega makes THE BEST mode7-like rail shooters of all time

btw that flying cat thing in the bonus stage looks like Falkor for neverending story lol

  • excellent 5 out of 5 i like this game.

  • Music just a tad lifted from the Blake's 7 theme tune...?

  • Well spotted.

I loved this game and Blake's 7 but never made the connection.

Please don't try to watch Blake's 7 again. I made that mistake; Some things are best left rose tinted.

Buck Rogers, however, is a different story.

  • Loved this game. When I saw it at the arcades in 1985 it blew me away. The Master System conversion is amazing too.

IMHO Space Harrier has a timeless quality which makes it one of the very, very few games that is "ageless".

This was from a time when games were about gameplay not ridiculously long cut-scenes.

  • Is that a fuckin DOM on the title screen?

Did Sega realize how crazy the resemblance is? I wonder if Gundam sued.

  • This is a good game though it has to be said particular video / MAME rip is noticably inferior to the real thing, especially the sample rate on the sound. Might be worth trying to tweak it up to sound or possibly even look a bit better. Cheers though.

  • Every here and there, I look again at this game.. and over the years I still can't believe how they could possibly create such a game like this.. for fuck sake it was 1985 !!!

No game to refer, everything here is brand new... 1985... I wish I could have some info about this game creation back then

  • This game (and the hardware they used) was so ahead of its time, it actually took 10 years for someone to make a 100% faithful home version (32X version). The 2X 68000 cpus sega used for the arcade was too much.

In 1985 the 68000 CPU was only used in the most expensive home and professional computers, yet this arcade had 2 of them along with some other chips for sound. Back then Space Harrier was even more impressive than Crysis was a couple of years ago.

  • Indeed, the "graphics" in this game are more amazing than they look. Consider: Space Harrier was released in 1985, the same year that Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan. Super Mario Bros. is an 8-Bit nightmare. Space Harrier is virtually 32-Bit and it is comparable to games that were released less than 10 years ago. Sega's arcade systems were truly impressive.

  • I've never played this game, is it one of those shooters that is challenging or one of those shooters that is TOO challenging? If it's anything like Sin & Punishment then I want it. If it's anything like Ikaruga then screw it.

  • Sin & Punishment isnt in the same category as Ikaruga...

  • Uh, I didn't say it was. You need glasses or something.

  • But then why are you comparing them?

  • I'm not and I didn't. Why don't you re-read what I wrote. Is English not your first language or something?

  • Ok, you're talking about challenging shooters, and you mention S&P and Ikaruga. I told you that S&P isn't the same category of shooter as Ikaruga (S&P = Rail Shooter), therefore...

  • Oh, good God, I'm sorry I didn't get sub-genre specific.

  • That was to what I was referring.

  • S&P isn't a rail shooter.

  • This game is coming to the Virtual Console this summer.

  • came out today in the states

  • It's coming in a half hour!!!

  • Space Harrier, one of the greatest arcades of the 80s. I say that because of the 3D graphics which was unheard of back then. There are others that do rival Space Harrier, but I love this game without a doubt.

  • damn this game makes me think of my bro all the time his played the shit out this game!!!!

  • classic game one of my favourites, always found it quite easy tho, no way near as hard as thunderblade & afterburner, just go round in circles innit until about stage 14 where it did get hard

  • GIRUGAMESH

  • Hey, does anyone remember this game? This guy braks of his hirt and starts walking in with a black background behind him and the stage name appearing on top. He then starts throwing multiple punchs rapidly and the punchs gets faster then he ends the final punch with a "WAAAHHH-DA!" It was for the genesis, but I don'tremember the title, can anyone help me out?

  • Last Battle?

  • i'm not sure. I'll check it out.

  • Dude it came out in 1985 what do you expect?

  • grow up kid and realize the awesomness of old 2D games which do not exist anymore nowadays!!!

  • fool ass... the "graphics" may be a bit primitive, but there was much soul in these games that came out back in the day. now people are making games just to earn a quick penny. there is hardly that spirit in your "microsoft" and "sony" games today. that era is the era of innovation. this is the era of media hype, and bullshitty monotonous gaming

  • the 80s arcade games fucking rocked, if you wernt around back then you missed out dude

  • A true test of reflexes and reaction times. This is the real man's game.

  • My friends used to think i was sooooo good at this. Turns out i was just constantly making in a big counter-clockwise circle and pressing the fire button retarded fast.

  • This arcade gem is #1 on my list of games I hope to see on the new virtual console arcade

  • This is gonna be on Virtual Console Arcade, on Monday, thanks to the new update.

  • Remember this from Shenmue 2 <3

  • "up up down down left right left right down down down down up, YEAH, I got the Space Beam, YEAH!" from the song "Space beam" on OC Remix

  • Omg!!!Great game :')

  • Welcome to the fantasy zone! Classic!!!

  • Man I still love this game.

Say anyone remember the clone of this game that Sqaure did on the Nes 3-D World runner?

  • Love this game, had it on the Sega Master System.

Cool looking now, and back in like 1985 when it came out, it was mindblowing to see. Considering what else was out in 1985, Sega was quite friggin amazing.

  • The player looks like Bob from Sunset Riders.

  • fuck that kid

    he eats cum

for then these graphics were pimp

    and gameplay matters most

video games were more family guy back then

now its more like space chimps graphics.

  • I ment they were great

  • Comment removed

  • god i loved this game, but why did they change it from a green alien to a blonde white dude?

  • The main charecter has always been a blonde "dude" weither it was the arcade version, the Master system/Mark 3 version, or the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

I think your thinking of 3D World runner on the Nes

  • nah it was definately space harrier. I remember it vividlywhen they first put into hunstanton at the arcades there, would go down there all the time and got the high score etc. Then at some point when i came back, it was a blonde dude instead of a shirtless green alien gut, Was definately space harrier, that game was burned onto my retina \o/

  • Then it may either have been orginally a pirated rom in the machine or there was some problem with the monitor or whatever.

  • i uswd to play this fucker

  • Video games now make these graphics look like shit, but these old arcade games kicked ass

  • Indeed; the strategy, psychology and an overall fun experience that arcade machines along with 16 bit home consoles provided beat the modern "all fluff and no stuff" games of the twenty first century digital generation hands down.

  • finished this on 1 quarter at hershey park 1993 ^^

  • You are my hero

  • With 18 lives, what's the point?

  • this game had damn good graphics for being made that early

  • One of the most original game I have ever played!
