  • Amazing kata! Extremely fluid and I think much more beautiful than you normally would see, for example in competitions. It looks almost like a combination of Wing Chun movements and Karate movements. Does anyone know if that's the way he teaches goju katas to his students as well?

  • @tellet6 Of course that is the way he teaches his students. Check his videos of him doing kata slow motion in my collection. He was the co-chairman of the IOGKF and lived and trained with Higaonna Sensei in Japan at the Yoyogi dojo. They together are true Go= Higaonna and Ju= Chinen. I have several other old videos from the 70's of both of them performing kata.

  • very cool

  • When they started talking about gardening they showed his kata.

    Very fluid form!

  • That's his dojo around his house.

  • Sadly Sensei's house and home dojo burned down this past December

  • @NewEnglandBudo Wow, thats a bummer. For those of us that live close to Spokane. Do you have the address of the school. That is if Sensei has rebuilt. thanks

  • @MrLB78 He lost his home & home dojo. I believe that the Dojo on Perry is still very active. Check your phone book.

  • I stayed at sensai Chinen's house for a week, 13 hrs of training everyday. Goshu ku is brutal practice. Sensai Chinen would always be watching my back like a hound.

  • Do you really think because they have master or grand master in front of their name they can't play politics or lie.

Ignore all that as it occurs everywhere.Look at the technique if it's good the rest is just nit picking and jealousy and this is very good indeed.

Look for his bunkai for seiunchin .INCREDIABLE.

  • i go to hes karate class up on perry im a green belt 3 stripes

  • Chinen Sensei's kata is beautiful.

  • Yes indeed, and Sensei Chinen kata and his movements make Mankind beauty more harmoniously beautiful. It is so rare to see a martial arts master like this !

Such awesome video, thank you very much, NewEnglandBudo, for posting this.

  • He seems to bring out the Chinese side if Go Ju in his Katas more that other Sensei i have noticed.

  • Is Teruo Chinen a direct descendant of the 36 families of Kuninda?

  • I am not sure? I do know that his uncle was a propagator of Yamani-Chinen Ryu Kobojutsu

  • I remember being in Chinen Sensei's class. Really good guy. I was surprised when I saw him years later at the community college where I retook his class for P.E. credit.

  • i rrcently read an interview by mark bishop, the interview was of eiichi miyazato sensei, who says that higaonna sensei and chinen sensei are lying to the american people in regards to their lineage, to make money, also that he has expelled them from the jundokan? this interview was taken before miyazato senseis death.

  • Sad but it was Kent Moyer who interviewed Miyazato supposedly for political gain. My SHorin ryu Sensei saw Miyazato months before he passed and after this interview and told him to tell Chinen that " I miss him very much!". Don't believe everything that you read and only one-half of what you see.

  • your right, whats important is that the knowledge of these great arts is being passed on.

    Thanks.

  • Chinen Sensei was one of my examiners for 1st Dan and then 2nd dan in Okinawa

  • Really? What years were that?

  • 1979 and then 1981. I'm still REALLY enjoying Goju. I love what I do and do what I love.

  • Spokane, Washington..USA

  • Great Teacher.

If you read this and train come to Gashuku 2009 at Spokane!

  • Great video... but i don't agree when he said that Sensei Chinen is a gentle person lol. in trainning u have 2 be carefull or u are punished... i'm saying this because he made me stand 4 hour without move and i didnt do anything wrong :S... but he is a great sensei... waiting for next time he comes to portugal

  • Divad, that is me making that statement. Believe me, I have had my fair share of "Chinese Tattoos"!

  • i have met sensei chinen in south africa about 6 years ago , he helped me alot in my karate skills

  • I was in sensei's karate class at Gonzaga for two years ... learned more than ever ... best teacher out there.

  • Thank you for posting; I was present at a gashuku in 1988 when Miazato sensei visited. I do not train anymore but training with Chinen Sensei was a great experience. Best regards to Chinen Sensei.
