LeRoi and Jeff's solos are like night and day: LeRoi's solos were more stately, discreet, and controlled, yet were very beautiful and blended with the songs. Jeff's a very wild, unpredictable soloist who along with Rashawn has brought the horn section to the very front row, and also comes up with some amazing background riffs (ie. #41, Tripping Billies). He's content sometimes playing high squawks for several minutes, but it makes the song very positively untamed and wild! Keep it up, Jeff!
I didnt know Leroi, but i know that Jeff Coffin is a super talented sax, flute, etc player with the Flecktones. He is in my opinion one of the best musicians today.
Jeff is more the 'cool' jazz player, as were Leroi - may he rest in peace - was a very warm sax player. Completely different styles so I don't think it's fair to compare the two.
As a big DMB fan I must admit though, that Leroi was very much my favorite too, as he was for many others. So it might be a while before fans are used to Coffin's style.
jeff coffin is very talented and is as close as to filling in for leroi as they are going to get i believe.... yes the styles are completely different but both are very talented musicians, as for electric, you're deaf sir.
he plays variations on a theme in this solo, mainly focused around a single note. pretty cool actually, although opinions will vary and you're more than welcome to your own. I think its cool as an experiment with what you can do with a single tone. It brings the motif development of Sonny Rollins to mind for me. Coffin can play a single thing and really wring every drop of creativity from it.
I'm very aware of what I'm saying and don't think it's tacky at all. It's a cool way of building a solo and the musician is forcing himself to do alot with a little. But as I said, opinions, vary and you're welcome to yours. But even if you don't like Coffin's style, its hard to ignore his technical facility.
More jazzy feel than Leroi - which is strange. He also is friggin flawless. I have friends who are sax majors that can't believe this guy isn't more well known. He also has a THICK sound - which is great. Still, I'd rather have Leroi any day. I'll miss him...
he's one of the few dudes that can pull stuff like this off. kind of playing that comes strait from the soul. jeff is an amazing guy, and i recently found out his son goes to a college in my area, pretty crazy.
This entire solo is focused around one central note, and he only takes it maybe four steps above and below, before starting to jump the octaves. I'm a saxophonist, and I have to say, it's exactly this sort of thing that I admire in other players - the ability to control the tinstrument so much that that sort of a solo becomes absolutely incredible.
I was at that concert at NC State. Specifically I was in the ensemble and I can say that the things he did on stage just totally blew my mind. He has such control over every sound the saxophone is capable of making, and i shows anytime he plays. This is a great clip.
he played at NC State with our Jazz Ensemble last week, i went and saw it and he is amazing. He did so much cool stuff, and he is just.....i dunno, i was speechless at his talent with the sax after i left that place
i saw him play... he did cool stuff like jamming the bell on the mike to blurt out low notes, and taking off the neck and playing that alone, and using the keys as a percussion instrument, and you should see him play alto and tenor at the same time
This past weekend I went to this jazz festival, and Jeff Coffin was there. And I was able to get into on of his clinics he held, and wow...... he is amazing. He played by himself for over 30 min. It was incredible.
actually he does play a lot of cool special things but you have to go to one of his clinics or a more private place, like when he's playing at a school
If you don't get goosebumps from this, you aren't a human.

Variations on a single note? Do you even realize what you're saying and how tacky that is?

When he plays real music he's a legend. This stuff is just mindless squalking, and you can ferret out the posers when they say it's godlike.
