it kills me that people stil swing at riseballs...as a pitcher i still throw it because batters are so horny they can`t lay off it. its all about spin recognition, the riser has a very distinctinctive spin that for some reason batters can;t recognize. but once they do it will be ball after ball.  thats when you hit em with the inside cut fastball.

Rise balls do not really rise. They just fall at a different rate than the batter expects and the batter swings under the pitch.

I am not saying it isn't a great pitch. i have seen professional baseball players that can't hit it very well. Maybe it just needs a new name.

@jonsand3rson ..it crosses the plate higher thna where she releases it. It does not suddenly "jump".  It is impossible for a person to put enough rotation and speed on an object as heavy as a softball for it to overcome gravity.

@psufan38 I have seen several videos done with high speed cameras. It is impossible to make the ball "hop" or "jump" even when thrown underhand. The ball is too heavy for any human to put enough rotation on it to overcome gravity. The ball ball does "rise" as it goes from the pitcher's hand to the plate, but as you said, it is only because it is being thrown underhand.

The riseball is an illusion. It only seems to "hop"because the batter expects the ball to be lower when it gets near the plate. You would have to throw the ball around 90mph and with about 35rpsec to have a chance to overcome gravity.

Obviously the pitch is good. It is just misnamed.
