i really really wanted to like this cuz i love AiC but this is horrible i rather phil anselmo or corey taylor ...man this is really bad he just destroyed the most beautiful song
I think it's unfair to keep comparing William to Layne. William is still a great singer and it seems they are just paying tribute to some amazing songs. Jerry wrote a lot of the music and he deserves to play them. It's still a great version. I'll always love Layne's voice, but I can't shit on someone else just because they're not Layne.
his voice sounds like from the 50's. layne's voice is epic, thats what sux when youre replacing the vocalist, you cant help but to compare.. specially in this, cause he's trying to sound like layne.
IMHO they should not do the original AIC songs, at least not in public. No offense to Devall but it just ruins the music, Layne and Jerry's voices are what made these songs great and they will obviopusly never be the same again.
@TDF10411 I've heard shawn morgan and aaron lewis both do a cover of Nutshell, i do perfer Aaron's over Shawns, but they just sound like mediocre copies compared to the original.
hands down one of the best tracks in the history of music. Still gives me chills. One of my favorite to play on acoustic also!! Amazing how this new kat sounds so much like Layne! No its not the same and it never will be but for what its worth, its amazing.
This has nothing to do with this video just an oppinion, AIC kicked ass on the first two albums w/original members, after that good but not great the chemistry is gone.
Sorry to sound like a fanboy, but AiC died with Layne. DuVall is a good singer, nothing against him, but the chemistry between Layne's almost hauntingly beautiful voice and Jerry's songwriting, vocals and playing is what made Alice in Chains. I'm not saying Jerry should stop, it's just especially now, with Mike gone too, it should be recognised as a different band. Different members, different sound, different image, just make a quick comparison and you'll see what i mean
@FreakyStyley95 You know that Mike Starr left the band in the early 90s, right? He wasn't the bassist for almost 20 years prior to his death....Mike Inez was. I think it's sad that Starr died, but he was out of the band for a long time.
@FreakyStyley95 meh, in my opinion, Jerry Cantrell is and was the soul of the band, he was usually writing the songs. At the end of the day, I trust that Jerry Cantrell and co know what they're doing...they're the award winning band, not me. DuVall can carry the tunes, yeah, he doesn't have Staley's tone or anything, but he's not a bad singer
@gabegambino actually Layne wrote almost half the lyrics and some of the music. Jerry is good in his own right, but AIC would have been nothing without Layne's voice.

I think all of you are putting your own thoughts about how Duvall doesn't know anything about pain and suffering to sing these songs. You don't know his real life background. For all you know he might have been through alot tougher things than you know. I am guessing but, I think he has.

@lilrockable Were you even alive when this music was made? Sure, some things sound superior in hindsight, but at the time, nothing was better than what the original band was writing/recording. I lived in Seattle in that era, and no music epitomized the drearyness of that town better than the Dirt and Facelift.
@WarmothGuitarist the original band? Pre-Inez joining almost every song was written by Layne and Jerry, with literally only a select few featuring contribution from Sean and Starr.. i'm not trying to be rude, but Starr leaving had no effect on thier music, and Jar of Flies, Self-titled, and Unplugged were released after the departure of starr.. and let's be real those albums left a far larged legacy then Facelift and Sap
@lilrockable Incorrect. AIC's legacy lies with Facelift and Dirt. Those were the albums they were hailed for. Those are the albums they're most associated with. With songs like We Die Young, Man In The Box, Would?, Them Bones, Down In A Hole, Rooster, and Angry Chair, those were the songs that they were tearing the roofs off of Seattle clubs with. So, you think Jerry actually wrote and arranged all of the bass and drums on those records? Not hardly. Quit quoting Wikipedia, kid.
You like Inez more than Starr, that's fine. But don't try to argue about things that you didn't experience. Anyone who was in the gen x crowd that was there when AIC first surfaced knows how valuable Starr was to AIC, and how much more important Facelift and Dirt were.
...and with that said. I'm done. I'm not arguing with someone who wasn't even alive when any of those albums came out. Someone who will never know the early 90's vibe in Seattle, around the country...and even around the world.
@WarmothGuitarist Hey man, I have no problem with your opinion. You're obviously a dedicated and long-lasting AiC fan and that's always a good thing in my book. But you should probably look up DuVall a little bit before slagging him as an inexperienced yuppie n00b.
@maddunea hes not so new. i seen them at RockImPark in germany in 06... i thought it was magnificent. it may not be layne but the music is still there and for someone who lived through those times when these songs were new, just the feeling of memories and everything come back to you. doesn't matter really who the singer is but i think he does a fine job. Jerry Cantrell wrote most of the songs and sang them anyways.
yes is true...but personally i don't like the new singher...i think that have a good voice but not for alice in chains...maybe for sinning some song like lenny kravitz!! so..this is my opinion...and i'm not god...bye
Duvall sounds great! Stayley was a junkie and nearly destroyed the band--great singer and very sad that he died, but I'm sure they're glad to be able to move forward.
this guy really fucks me off i no hes know layne, but its the fact that they tried to replace him and sing his songs, layne was and still is one of a kind and to go and try to find a replacement,to me is disrspectful, especially this song which is just full of true meaning that this dude dosent have.neway miss you layne rest in peace mate
There is a quality in William Duvall's voice that is much like Layne's without being a complete copycat. Obviously Layne and his voice are irreplaceable but I think that Jerry and the boys took their time and found the right fit to go on with the band and in doing so are honoring Layne and honoring what they did as a group to change music history. For a long time, too many people only talked about the horrible way Layne died. Since AIC's return, the conversation has finally begun to change.
@Nicomis11 I agree with you. Layne is the only singer I've ever connected with as if I actually knew him, it's very strange. It was hard to hear the things people said when he first died, like everyone forgot about that is a person, not a tragedy. i'm glad they found Will. it's not quite the same, but it helps, a lot.
@Nicomis11 There is nothing in Duvall's voice like Layne. Are we hearing the same singer? Maybe at times he tries to imitate Layne, but his natural voice has no similarity nor the same quality.
sometimes it is hard for me listen to Duvall singing my favorite AIC songs like nutshell, man in the box, or would... songs that Layne truly shined on.... Layne will never ever be replaced he was IMO the best vocalist of the 90s..... BUT I think black gives way to blue was AMAZING, Duvall rocks. I think if he was fronting ANY OTHER band, people would love him, but because its AIC, people cant accept someone on lead vocals other than Layne. AIC will always be Layne and Jerry..but Duvall Rocks!
I can't make up my mind about William. Sometimes he sounds great and other times he sounds like shit. This performance was fantastic but I feel like Layne owns this song.
@FreeIconoclast I will help you make up your mind on william. He does harmonize good with jerry. When it comes to that raw power in the lead vocals Layne had, William cant touch it. I have seen random singers covering aic on youtube that blow duvalls vocals away. As I love to see aic conitinue and love a few of the new jams they made there is no doubt it was timing and the fact duvall is likeable that he landed the gig. Backing vocals should be as far as he got.
It is so hard not to hear Layne's voice with this. His sound was so great...the way he would grind his vowels at the end. Still, this version of the band sounds good, too!

@anja96ful dude my friend saw them live and they were still badass, plus how can you be an aic fan and say this sucks, it still has 75% of the originals
THat nigger piece of shit believe that can replace Layne?...hahahaha...what a crap!...Cantrel just a money searching!!...that's the way you make great music in shit music!....THX Cantrell make money asshole!!...Layne was AIC you just rice....;)
the rules are simple, you subscribe us and after we have 1000 subscribers we will start showing YOUR vids, to all our subscribers! doesnt matter what your videos are about, well promote them for you!
On his OWN merit, not too interesting to listen to. Comes off as cheesy. Some notes it was like "yeah I can dig that", but most of the time all I could think was "shut-up already, that line was like 3 chords ago", because he just drags every fucking line out and it doesn't do anything for me at all.
I do miss Layne. His attitude, his lyrics, and his one of a kind voice... Duvall impresses me more and more in his own right... especially the high part of this song. Gave me chills, as I think about Layne... RIP Layne. Long live AIC
People. GET OVER LAYNE. He's DEAD. Sorry to be so blunt. But he is gone. He will never return. So sorry to those who are expecting to hear Layne, but your wish will never come true. William DuVall is a very talented musician, who is FORCED to have to live up to somebody else's name. He has to be forever recognized as "Layne's replacement" and not as "William DuVall, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Alice in Chains" due to ungrateful fans. Look, if you don't like it, don't listen to it.
Wtf?? Where in the goddamn did all the unplugged aic go??? Very fuckn pissed, all i can find is this duvall guy when i wanna here layne!! Not lenny kravits look alike. Total bs
Sorry guys. But the new Alice in Chains just doesnt do it for me.
Jerry Cantrell is one of my favourite songwriters and it indeed is basicly his band, but this new album just doesnt do anything to me. Not a single bit of emotion coming up. Its empty. Sorry, I really am, for everyone that it turned out like this. I just couldnt think of someone fitting in Alice in Chains worse than DuVall. And that has NOTHING to do with the fact that he isnt white. In fact, thats the only thing I like about it.
The great thing is there making new music that's still AIC. Jerry is awesome and Ducal isn't trying to BE anyone else. He respects the music and Laynes memory. They rock live as well, I got to see them live in MN and was blown away!
This is a very personal song to Layne. It's great Alice n Chains moved on,n found a great singer,I just don't like this song being touched.Couldn't they have chosen another song??? For once lets give Layne respect, love, privacy he deserves. This song belongs, to Layne it is Layne,it should not be touched.
outside.enemy@gmail.com: No offence, but William desicrated one of my favorite songs by Alice In Chains, I can sing it way better, and no one can sing it like Lane, well except for me!!!!!! Good try though?
@RexJava75 Yep and looks like Jerry and William are the first two. They deserve my support when they write some material of their own and get a new name.
@RexJava75 Probabily you are deaf and blind to see that it isnt Alice in Chains and Duvall doenst know about what he is singing... Could you really feel the real AIC on the stage!? Man... I dot think so... "Yeah its over now..."
You all who complains duvall's vocals want a Lane singing? It's impossible laine's gone. Duvall is trying his best and has never wanted to replace lane.
@clayto1332 I was at that show too and absolutely dig the sound that Duvall gives to this band. I am so disappointed to hear about your encounter with him. I don't understand why he would be this way to a fan. Did you ask "shake my hand" rudely at all? Cantrell's a fucking brilliant musician and will listen to anything he creates. Layne, you are dearly missed RIP. If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead
duvall is great i wont dish out any hate on the guy. Its just too hard for ANYONE of that matter, to fill the void of Layne Staley. Layne Staley is INCREDIBLY underappreciated, he had the best grunge vocals him and chris cornell. DuVall is great, but he'll NEVER be layne, NO ONE can replace Layne. Rest in peace to the legendary Grunge vocalist. Layne Staley. Wish you didn't die, damn fuckin heroin.
i really really wanted to like this cuz i love AiC but this is horrible i rather phil anselmo or corey taylor ...man this is really bad he just destroyed the most beautiful song

So, you think Jerry actually wrote and arranged all of the bass and drums on those records? Not hardly. Quit quoting Wikipedia, kid.
WarmothGuitarist 1 month ago
You like Inez more than Starr, that's fine. But don't try to argue about things that you didn't experience. Anyone who was in the gen x crowd that was there when AIC first surfaced knows how valuable Starr was to AIC, and how much more important Facelift and Dirt were.
...and with that said. I'm done. I'm not arguing with someone who wasn't even alive when any of those albums came out. Someone who will never know the early 90's vibe in Seattle, around the country...and even around the world.
WarmothGuitarist 1 month ago
@WarmothGuitarist Hey man, I have no problem with your opinion. You're obviously a dedicated and long-lasting AiC fan and that's always a good thing in my book. But you should probably look up DuVall a little bit before slagging him as an inexperienced yuppie n00b.

people what we think about the new alice in chains? and about the new singer?
maddunea 2 months ago

Nicomis11 3 months ago 29
@Nicomis11 I agree with you. Layne is the only singer I've ever connected with as if I actually knew him, it's very strange. It was hard to hear the things people said when he first died, like everyone forgot about that is a person, not a tragedy. i'm glad they found Will. it's not quite the same, but it helps, a lot.
pablobubba 2 months ago

@FreeIconoclast Layne owns every song
Joca54 3 months ago
@FreeIconoclast I will help you make up your mind on william. He does harmonize good with jerry. When it comes to that raw power in the lead vocals Layne had, William cant touch it. I have seen random singers covering aic on youtube that blow duvalls vocals away. As I love to see aic conitinue and love a few of the new jams they made there is no doubt it was timing and the fact duvall is likeable that he landed the gig. Backing vocals should be as far as he got.

On his OWN merit, not too interesting to listen to. Comes off as cheesy. Some notes it was like "yeah I can dig that", but most of the time all I could think was "shut-up already, that line was like 3 chords ago", because he just drags every fucking line out and it doesn't do anything for me at all.

Duvall is nice, but Layne... Layne had that 90's symbolism of a fallen angel that you know... that you know. Won't last long here.
