January 9, 2010 - yesterday, two miles from my home, a gunman motivated by, I do not know what, but certainly hate, gunned down 19 people, of whom six have died. A seventh, our representative, Gabrielle Giffords, hands on by a thread. We sang this song today at the beginning of church and I cried. I cried because it is so true that we wade in the waters of life, the cold muddy waters of life. This song is so beautifully evocative of our need for grace in the face of hate and oppression.
Im hispanic but raised in a black community and i grew up with this song, i love it so much and i would randomly sing it sometimes but i didnt know where i was getting this song from, but now i remember !
Simply amazing performance! Gotta say though, and despite not being performed in the same way as here, Eva Cassidy's version has in my honest opinion, the greatest vocals on any version of this song
Eva Cassidy does have a great voice, but NEVER be able to capture the true meaning and feeling of thes song the way my ancestors did when it was written, there is no better way for this song to be sung other than the OLD NEGRO WAY, because when they sung it it had a tremendousthe amount of meaning to it. Any other way is just disgraceful, to my people. You have to be able to unserstand the true and full meaning of the powerfullness of This OLD NEGRO SPIRITUAL.
the slaves used to sing this song as a warning when the "masters" would take the hounds to look for runaways. it would tell the escapee that he was being searched for, and to get in the water so the hound would loose his scent trail. it was also sang for baptisms, thus "wade in the water" and the line "god's gonna trouble the water" was symbolic of christ bringing his people back to him through baptism.
She has a beautiful voice!

nobody can sing this as well and as powerful as Irma. the fast tempo of the other versions just ruin the songs meaning.

This spiritial has great meaning for me because it hold's dear the struggles of my
ansesters & the promises of God my Father washing us clean though baptism to be
eternally his through Christ our Lord & bringing w/ it brothers & sisters freedom from
the shared guilt & of true redemption of wholeness through Christ's suffering. AMEN!
Glory to our King & God. God Bless & Peace to all.

Keep at it, Irma! One day your version might be as good as Cherry Lee Mewis's!

you're telling us an English newbie can do a southern black spiritual better than a soul legend? You must be Cherry Lee's boyfriend or something.
