It's not that bad a place. I've stayed a couple of times and never felt in danger. As for the dodgy Indians? I found them to be freindly and if you talk to them when you get there you can get yourself a cheaper deal on a room than what you pay online through booking agents. My only concern for the place is if there's ever a fire it's a real rabbit warren to get out of

Like Chomskyfan, I too said to myself "What the fuck am I doing here" when I saw the place for the first time. Although the room itself wasn't bad, what you have to see on the way there makes you want to run away - dirt, grime, garbage, people hanging their laundry up everywhere. But hey, that's what you put up with to save a lot of money. If you don't want to see that stuff, go pay $400 and stay at the Madarin.

@pug1gun Actually I just went to the Mandarin Hotel's website for Hong Kong (mandarinoriental) and looked at what their cheapest room (called the Superior Room) would cost for a night. It's $412. So I was right! And by consequence, you were wrong! And what's even more amazing is that I didn't even check the prices before I wrote down $400 - it was a total guess based on what I thought the prices would be. But hey, thanks for trying to show me up with your erroneous knowledge

I'm from the US and staying in that hostel at this moment. There are a bunch of annoying Indian swindlers and creepy African men that just stand around looking among the crowd of tourists. My first impression was "what the fuck am I doing here", but after realizing how much money I was saving, I've realized that the regular HK hotels are the REAL criminals. Just keep your money safe and don't buy from the neighbors because every deal is a rip-off if you're white.

seems you´ve had an easy access to your room. I was on the 16th floor in Carlton Guesthouse (Block C), only possible reach via lift. Always have to wait for....

i stayed at the same hotel in oriental Pearl. In what was a broom cupboard I think.
