What I don't understand though, is why people blame the tool and not the situation that requires it. I didn't hate the kids for not picking me - they were just being realistic (I'm terribly inept at athletics).
No, I hated the schools for forcing me to play dodgeball instead of learning things that are actually useful to me and suit my interests (like math).

One thing I think you should have mentioned is that it is not currently possible to poll the server for someone else's RealID information. You can poll the server for your OWN, and that's it.

There is still a small risk, but let me explain how it would work... it may take more than one reply...
1. Someone (preferably with an already popular addon) would have to update their addon to have it join an hidden addon communication channel. Many addons use these to communicate with each other, gatherer is a good example.

3. They would install an addon on their side that joins that same communication channel and then sends a command to the other people's addon.
4. The addon on your machine would poll the server for your information and then send it to that chat channel where the person could receive all the information and record it.
Will GearScore do this? From the sounds of it, very unlikely. But it's totally a different way of doing it

First, they would begin to notice the effect fairly quickly. And 2nd I belive Blizzard will fix this security loophole before any such addon can become wide spread in usage.

It is perfectly reasonable to respond to claim of what one's own software may do, it would be unreasonable to state that other people do or don't have the intention(s) - that would be as they say in court, hearsay, of which the first person (this add-on author) has no direct experience.

You may not intend to create the addon, but it will be done. As soon as this hits the forums, a webscraper will associate all of the names that are on the forums with their corresponding characters. This will not effect people 100%, but you don't have to effect 100% of the people in game. It's the kind of thing that will snowball. If it's extended to the Armory, game over.
@GreenleafElf17 Why would I be jealous of a mod that has brought popularity to the idea that gear=ability. I've cleared nearly everything in Wrath but when I was asked to join a pug for Vault and I didn't have gearscore, I was told I couldn't join the group. Not only would I have been the most qualified member of the group, but also one of the highest dpsers. BUT NO, I was refused because I didn't use a pointless mod that says nothing about the skills of the player.
GS FTW, anything that griefs carebear motherfuckers is a good thing in my book.

Gearscore is real bullcrap. equip a mage with attack power items ..you'll have 6k gs and deal no damage..
humans can do what an addon just cant.. build equip fitting to your class/talents.
