The judges at this level are not picky enough. If they were, you wouldn't see such blaring errors at the highest level of the sport. This horse is being pulled behind the vertical. And a horse at this level should never be so disconnected in the high & front end. The hind legs never reach the elevation of the front, revealing the horse is not driving enough from the hind end. Also, I was distracted by the tail flicking which everyone knows is an obvious sign of annoyance in horses.
He totally TOOK this! Maybe technically off but Freestyle should be about the audience and show too. The choreography was unbelieveable! The music! AMAZING!!! Everytime I watch it, I get goose bumps! GORGEOUS!
I have watched it and also LOVE it. However, the judges in dressage are extremely picky at this level as they should be. His half passes were not straight in some of them , his trot had many rhythmn changes and also, his hands were not still--- the horse's composition -for instance his front leg twisted upward when trotting... his extended trot was not as big (because of his small size) . This horse cant really compete against stride. like a Hanoverian or Dutch. This may be the reason ..
This was by far my favorite ride of the night. Could not believe how wonderful! I think though that the judges A) did not like him riding one-handed...jerks... and B) did not like the free walk or canter pirouettes. The free walk was not very relaxed and the he traveled a bit on the pirouettes. I think he should have had a much better score and at least medalled.
maybe the one-handed does earn more points, but I'm guessing the judges didn't like that we the fans liked it. Then again, I'm not a dressage judge, just one who has been subjected to their 'loving' comments time and time again.
The taking the reins in one hand and raising his other when he did the one tempis, as well as the end passage. But He looked like he had a GREAT time riding!
@jeaninedressage The reins in one hand is actually a move that earns more points, and the passage didn't appear to me as showboating because the crowd was already going nuts just for his ride, but he did look wonderful doing it all, regardless!
@jeaninedressage I didn't either until I watched a commentary on the World Cup Musical Freestyles, and looked it up haha, learn something new everyday! :)
I think he was cheated, he should have had the bronze at least. This is the only kür I remember from watching this, all the others sort of blended into each other. And although Totilas is beautiful and moves like something out of this world, his and Edward Gal's kür was really boring. This is what dressage needs to get out to the masses! And kür should be a little show!
OMG this was the most inspiring ride at this level i have ever seen. WELL DONE...showboat away. International Dressage must change. This team is here to stay. Cute horse, although I am somewhat biased. My new hero...rock on Jaun Manuel, keep up what you are doing with this horse.
awsomee!! We need more freestyles like this to make our sport more appreciated by non horse people. He certainly did a great job!!! The music is really well done too. =]
The Spanish horse is soooo arrogant (plus beautiful and... perfect, whether moving or standing!!!) I love that I get to ride one every weekend (I'm spanish, BTW :DDD ) Our horses have, sometimes, too much personality!!! Fuego is a clear example, you can even tell what he's thinking by the way he moves... perfect
IMO we need to see more spanish horses in the dressage they are all so elegant and gracefull and seem to have the movement that surpasses many warmbloods.
This is such an amazing performance, great choreography, stunning horse, and they obviously have a good connection. They should have placed. Maybe he showboated a little at the end, but who would argue that he didn't deserve to? It's freestyle for gosh sakes, they should be able have some fun with it!
@Tashinima thre is, 'cause our horses are small, and they don't have the extension others do, but we do have reunion, that's for sure!!! the problem is the spanish breed is still highly unknown outside Spain, and even within, some riders choose other breeds, which is such a pity.

awesome video - had seen another, but this one was clearer & from a different angle. Thank you for sharing. I agree that perhaps the showboating could have cost him a bit, unfortunately, but we loved it!! Absolutely amazing!!
@heidismutti I was facing the horse during the salute and when the crowd exploded, we all scared the horse! he was concentrating and suddenly, oh my GOD where did these people come from?! was the look on his face. Poor thing.
It was a scintilating performance and deserved better than 5th. He "showboated" a little towards the end which I suspect cost him a medal as the judges probably did not appreciate it...although the crowd certainly did. He got a Standing O!!! I was hoping to meet him at a reception that I attended the next day ....didn't see him though. His countryman, a woman who had given birth just 7 weeks ago, won the 100 mile event.
@sufenta67 it was weird though because he got all low and mid 80's from all of the judges except for B who gave him a 76. I don't know. For me though it was my favorite one he music was great and horse and rider looked like a great team. That would have been really cool to meet him!!
@SomethingBlue13 I really don't like parties/receptions of this kind. Totally out of my comfort zone. But, a chance to meet him and his countryman who won the endurance 100 miler was too hard to pass up. Most of the delegation did not speak English either which was a bit of a problem. The Spanish people are incredibly beautiful, though , I will say....just like the horse. I think Juan Manuel is known for his antics...scores be damned. It was truly the hi lite of the evening for me.
Hello. i am from Australia...i was wanting to know if you know where i could get the music that runs between 3 minutes 28 seconds and 6 minutes and 7 seconds....it is amazing music all through but i just that piece..
@mjblacky67 Sorry I have no idea where to get the music. I have a feeling that it was composed specifically for this freestyle. I do love the music too!
@sufenta67 I don't really think he showboated, he just raised his hand for the applause, and the crowd was already going nuts (I was there) so he either had to encourage it or deal with it anyway....
@sufenta67 I don't think that would've effected him, the scoring was just totally political after about the 8th rider in, when all the "good" ( or typically high scoring riders/countries) went in, all the scores got inflated. I mean, don't get me wrong these were all GORGEOUS performances, with talented pairs obviously or they wouldn't be there, the numbers of scores just got a little high....like the 91...in comparison to the other tests...
Thanks! I can't tell you how many times I've watched this ride. It's insane! So glad you got video of him from the end of the ring. Hadn't seen it from this view. Saved in my favs.

He was robbed of a gold medal. I literally cried when he didn;t win. Edward Gals sucked.. So did Stephans..
