  • I actually love Radiohead and Pearl Jam. :0

    but you're still a BAMF Derreck :D

  • @MrSplatterPlatter If you've seen any of my other videos I have professed my current love of Radiohead. Pearl jam are good but hold no interest for me.

  • @dereckvon ahh, well that's good to hear. :) Pearl Jam is honestly the only one of the "big 4 of grunge" that I care for

  • (addendum) By the way, hold off on picking up the Mark Hollis on vinyl. Many in the first run have a manufacturing defect. (I know because I have a bad one.) The reissue label, BaDaBing, claims it's going to notify people when better copies have been pressed. When I hear from them, I'll try to remember to let you know. I agree with what you said about how quiet that album is but I had to have it on vinyl too!

  • I loved to hear your praise of Ryuichi Sakamoto. Definitely agree with you, although I don't have Heart Beat. It's now on my short list! I still need to find a copy of Chrome on vinyl, too, although I do have the CD. I'm super jealous of your copy of US on vinyl. That's a Holy Grail record for me. Toward the Within; Homogenic; Mezzanine; Mark Hollis - SUCH great albums! I couldn't agree with you more about Mark Hollis! Fantastic selections, Dereck!

  • Your knowledge is appreciated. I'm glad to hear others talk about music that I love. Thank you sir!!

  • Was it Gabriel's UP that you were not too keen on? Thanks for your comment on Radiohead. Finally someone has said what really needed to be said about there overrated status. I met the lead singer at WFNX and he was very rude to the girl DJ. I thought the other DJ was going to toss his skinny butt out but he didn't. Seeing that would have made my day. I love the song 'Shocking' on Happy days by Catherine Wheel. Is it next to impossible to get a copy of Chrome on vinyl? Ex post Dereck~

    Rob/Boston

  • @Paneeks1960 Up took a long time to 'gel' in my perception of it. I would best put it this way, the mellowing of age shows on it. That's not a negative, just a reality that to me, is reflected in the less intense nature of his approach to the material.

  • @Paneeks1960 and thank you Rob, for your insightful comments. I'd love to say I met Thom Yorke!

  • @dereckvon Hey man you said you had slayer and megadeth on vinyl? Do you think you could make a video showing your thrash metal, and classic metal vinyl collection?

  • @arabianmetalhead99 I really don't have much to show on vinyl but sure.

  • this is dereck on top of his game.

  • "Loveless" just bought it back on cd this week never should have sold it in the first place. If i love a record i can play it for one/two years straight. Well i only love Pavement from those bands, i also don't like Pearl Jam,Korn, inubus etc. i don't even like Nirvana, but i understand what you're meaning. "Homogenic" is in my opion her best. "Teardrop" such a beautiful video and song of course. You could never give too much information. Bye Jen

  • Loveless would be in my list as well. From 1991 I would strongly recommend laughing stock by talk talk and just for a day by slowdive, I think you'd love em both.

  • @TheMM360 You're right, I do love them both and have them.

  • Dereck, can u do a video on Mogawai please?

if you're into the band. thanks :)

  • @AJ18109 Quite honestly, I have yet to buy my first Mogwai title. They have been on my radar for years and I haven't connected yet.

  • @AJ18109 I can do some more. I haven't used the term post-rock but I've shown some of my vinyl already. I know I have a lot of videos but have shown Slowdive and others. There is more to come for sure.

  • Bjork? I have everything by her up until Volta...and then I went off her. I also have a massive collection of press material on her (although not as much as my other OCD group ;))

  • talking about bad gigs....did I ever tell you when I walked out of a Harmonia gig?

  • oh so much passion and insightful choices...

  • "Loveless" - my man!!!

  • Thanks for replying to the thread Dereck! This also serves as a great recommendations video (eg Sakamoto, Mark Hollis etc..). Love your story about Laraji. Excellent stuff. I learn something every time!

  • Wonderfull video!!

  • Love it! That's the first time I heard Pavement grouped in with Korn, RHCP, Pearl Jam, etc. I love Pavement but love your honesty and enthusiasm. I have the same negative and emphatic reaction to a lot of "classic" bands like The Beatles, The Doors, and Yes, lol. Definitely all about one's personal feelings when it comes to music.

We're on the same page when it comes to MBV, Peter Gabriel, Bjork, Massive Attack, M. Hollis, Stereolab, etc. though! So jealous that you got to see MA live.

  • @KoolRanchDressing Exactly, more love for being true to oneself! Massive were massive and Horace Andy was with them!

  • The Pale Saints album is actually called "In Ribbons" -- amazing band and record. I saw them on this tour and they were killer. Hold off buying the Hollis vinyl reissue -- it's a mess, along with "Laughing Stock." In fact, it's being repressed as the pressings are bad -- noisy as hell with all sorts of surface noise, clicks and pops.

  • @katonwdepena Thanks for that. Say, that reminds me that I didn't respond to your message about Progfest. It's a real possibility. Yes, I should have just pulled it out, the Pale Saints. So cool you saw that tour! I can imagine.

  • Loveless is such a pretty album. I loove the 90's, I wish i was more musically conscious back then

  • love the energy and passion u have in your words! great video!

  • @scotricksen Thank you!

  • Amazing response Dereck! I must say that I was waiting for stuff like these. Catherine wheel was totally unknown to me before watching your videos. I've just ordered these two a few weeks ago. Mezzanine is the bomb for 98' totally agree. Mark hollis, man, I must get this/ I'll respond to the thread, but I struggle for 99', don't have much on vinyl :(( / peter gabriel and US, great memories for me, I love this album, saw one concert during that tout too. Thanks for educating me dereck!! peace

  • @Chris4127basket So glad to hear from you! We have similar tastes in many ways it seems.

  • Stereolab, sweeettt! One of my favorite albums of theirs for sure. I love the track "Blue Milk". Fantastic picks Dereck!

  • @TheInfiniteGroove I love these! Thanks friend!

  • I've been waiting for this thread response! Amazing albums you show. I love all of them. Massive Attack, hell yeah! I love the track "Exchange" from Mezzanine. You have inspired me once again. I was originally going to try and take the traditional approach to answering this thread, by trying to show "essential" albums of the 90s, but I would much rather show albums that I love that aren't as well know, and don't get enough praise. I mean whats the point of us all showing the same LPs, right?

  • @TheInfiniteGroove Exactly, show us your gold.

  • Very interesting and intriguing selections. Added a few to my "seek list." Always great to learn about the unfamiliar.

  • @wertsdb71 I'll be curious what you think of what you try.
