I love Standardbreds. I hate how early they are raced, and basically ruined because of all the damage caused to their ligaments. However my opinion changed when I went to a sulky racing stable in Canada, they started their horses later, and the breed was just lovely. I fell in love with this huge black stalltion and this time 13.2hh pony XD They are a great breed.
My new gorgeous boy is a standardbred.. He has never raced before.. He is ALL leg and ALL head hehehe.. Yeah he may not have the super sexy looks our anglo arab has but he has a cool, calm personality and looks can't make up for that.. I would actually opt for a std over another horse breed any day.. They are just easy going horses..
My standardbred is an ex racer. He would have been sent to the slaughter home if I hadn't bought him. It's pretty sad because he is so young and wouldn't have had a chance to live the rest of his life as a normal horse.
I adore my standardbred - we have been together for 6 years and he is capable of everything I would ask for. Anything he doesn't do is not worth doing - he is soft, responsive and totally willing. Never mind he's not into dressage - neither am I?
We love to cover distance and to be out on the range - CTR is pretty cool too!
Standardbreds are also good in the racking world....once the get in gait they are awesome.....Hard to train...na.
My mare is 3/4 standard and 1/4 TNW......Her other was 100 % standardbred. y brother in law just adopted 2- 4 yr mares right off the track....they r beautiful....
Standardbreds are amaing horses. I have one standardbred mare and she is the BEST horse i ever had. She was so easy to train she has a lovely canter also. And she can lope and do western pleasure. So for people who say they are hard to train are CRAZY lol.
i have two standies and i love them heaps my 23 year old standies has been sittin a paddock for two years and my sister lost her confidence on her standie and deciced to start ridin him and he goes like a dream.....
i get angry when people bag standies my standy came from NZ and his first owners thoughts he was a dud when he got shipped to Australia those owners thought he was a dud so they ent him to my work and they thought he was only good for trail rides i bought him and hes my bestfriend
why do so many people hate stbs!? i wanted to buy a stb but everyone i know says not to and my mum wont even let me! they all say they are ugly hard to train horrible to get to canter cant jump and all the rest they say i wont get anywhere on a stb but i don't see what ever they are seeing to make them say that! it's just not fair!
@AmethistGirl1 You get ugly horses in all breeds, and they aren't hard to train many are actually very willing to learn most people just don't have the ability or patience to re-train. I went to a Gymkhana with my two stbs, and won hack over 15hh, on Barney if I covered his brand and no one would know he was a stb and with Annie we placed 2nd in the 60cm and 70cm show jumping in a class of 4-6, and the girl who beat us, (youtube name: bestinthesadle) her horse is an awesome tb who clears 1.3m
@AmethistGirl1 I just brought a standardbred :) he is amazing and is a beautiful horse!!! he LOVES to jump! he is very smart! for the 6 weeks i have had him, he has learnt so much!! with only ME that is riding him! i dont get what people hate about standardbreds! they are beautiful and smart!! My standardbred didnt know how to gallop until 2 weeks ago.... i didnt teach him, the horses in his paddock did!
@NohoaLover i managed to con my mum and everyone into letting up on stb's i have bought one! i got her in November 28th i think it was she is a beauty and as sharp as a fox she learnt how to bow in 2 days! my mum still doesn't like them but doesn't mind ruby (the horse i bought) i hav vids of her on my account and she is great to learn on! go the STB's!
love this vid!! the standerbred that i ride can do every thing! At first I was not that strong(me not the horse) so when we where troting i almost fell of!! But now its really easy!:)
@wolf14985 Thankyou :) Annies trot is extremely smooth and fantastic for bareback :) I have another standie who is smaller and he seems to have a bigger trot :S which at the moment is a bit hard for me to sit too, but is really great and ground covering.
Standardbreds are amazing, both on and off the track. I've seen them race and I am always awed by how fast and steadily they can trot/pace. I know they're wonderful horses off the track as well, and are just as good as any other breed. Great video.
our standardbred has come so far since we first met her back in 2006, she was trained only to drive and knew one pace. trot.
after a while my sister became friends with our shadow, and now, four years later, this mare is a proud mother of an amazing filly, can jump, canter, gallop, do spanish walk and can even rear! shadow has come a long way since then and still has time to learn.
@LittleBayPony wow Well done :) I love hearing other peoples successful standie stories :D Other people don't realise how great they are because they may take a bit longer to train sometimes but its definately worth it ;)
@cowgirl7894 yeah, when somebody asks what breed shadow is i proudly say that she is a pure standardbred, then they just laugh.
people need to realise that years has gone into creating this breed, just like all the other breeds. and for years to be wasted by people who dont appreciate thier beauty and gentleness, it a real shame :)
@cowgirl7894 they sure are i dont have a horse yet havnt had one cause parents wont let em but when i do get my own i will get a standie ill find my fav horse macker and buy him haha
i just got my 1st horse .. hes a standie and he raced for 7 years .... he never paces anymore and hes on been off the trak one year .. were jumping CANTERING and trottingg he's as good as any breed .. i love him :)
Great video. I have a standardbred and I love him to bits. He was a pacer in his race days but has quite a nice trot now and is starting with the canter this winter.
i was riding with people who had quarter horses saying they had a standerbred. and they hated it because it never did anything but walk and they sold him immediately and i said why did you do that they are fun project horses. and amazing horses to jog and ride.
My cousins (who used to own annie =[ ) hate standies aswell cuz of annie, the problem was that they had no idea what they were doing....anyways standies are awesome project horses and its so good when people are like they cant jump but then you beat them in a jump comp on a standie =D I love showing off the fact that Standies can jump and canter and are just completely awesome! =P
wats amaising is they r all so differant there maising theyve been my fav breed for the last 5 yrs when im older they will be the horses i get even though im becoming a jocky they will still be the ones awsoem horses at my riding skewl we had blaze a really fat one he retired got monster the we got rockey now we just got jake yesterday awsoem horses all diff heights differnat riding abilitys personalitys but they r all damn right amaisng ily all standys
i reckon that they are also one of the most gifted horses because they can do alot more than any other horse out there. They have 4 paces not three they are capable of jumping and dressage and you can even teach them tricks like bowing or piaff and many more
I reckon that if the marking wasnt there people would buy them because they dont know its a standardbred. the only way you could tell is if they pace but one that has never raced or been taught to would be just like any other horse
oh my god your video nearly made me cry, i have a standardberd called rocky he was 15,2 and a bag off shit when i got him and now he is 16hh and is learning to canter, i would have never brought him if i had known but know i dont regreat any min of it ur video is amazing thanks for sharing it hope to see loads more, are you on face book ?? x x
Heyy Thanks! yea i am on facebook - Kristina Fletcher- I was uploading a new vid today but unfortunatly my internet screwed up and it wouldn't do it! grr...but I'll try again tomorrow! its of Annie for our One Year Anniversary :P lol I got her exactly a year ago on the 14/9/08...and we have a show this weekend(and my friend with the standie clive will be there aswell) and next weekend so i'll make videos out of that aswell so stay tuned!!! Subscribe if you like! thanks! xx
Yeah i totally agree 100% with you, i have a 7 year old standard bred, and she can jump over a metre, she can canter and trot, and we hav won heaps of ribbons and trophies!
She has boosted my confidence to the top!!
a year ago, i was scared to jump 1 foot, now im with her and im jumping over a metre,
i used to be scared to do cross country jumps and canter in inclosed spaces, now im Galloping across open, wide spaces with her! i love her so much!!!!
lol thats what you would think...and if you actually watch any foal they all pace a little bit to test it out but its only the standardbreds that are trained to keep that pace and use those muscles...
Got two of them. 7 years old Sam is actually russian trotter but its almoust the same. He is a rescue, got him when he was 3yrs. Ha has not been racing on track but is now doing endurance. And he is GREAT at it. And the 2th STB i got is just 3 yrs old, i have owned him less than month but allready love him :)
i love standies between me and my sister we have three and i think they beat any thoroughbred. i love coz they are so plaside . i would go past a standie
god why do sum people get so upset about these things! and to the people that waste evryone elses time going around upsetting people for no apparent reason, go get a life! dont watch these vids if ur gunna do nuthin but write nasty stuff... seriously! Annie is a wonderful horse! she has come such a long way thanx to this fab girl! LUV U KRIS!
Can u centor not like swear i dont know what ur saying and if u said that standarbreds suck well ull have to go to the er if i see u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video! I just LOVE standardbreds they are the best horses, we have 6.I hate how some people are all snotty about them and say they aren't good, but thats their loss. ilovetuff, although some harness racers are not the nicest to their standies there is also a big handful of them that love their horses and treat them just as well as any of us do.
i know a standardbred mare who is black, and i love her soo much! but every day i know that her owners may sell her and ill never she her again!!! how much i love standardbreds i hate harness racing!!! they treat the horses like a big pile of worthless pennies!
hey i luv standies there great never accualy had one but delt with 4ever but omg annie is so pretty omg omg omg if shes ever up fo sale im the first to no ok deal
haha thanks so much!! lol I can tell you that Annies not gunna be up for sale for a long time if i have anything to do with it!! lol shes my baby girl!! though recently shes been mucking up and bucking alot :S though the chiro is coming out tomorrow to check her out...we think its her back...
I love standies! Their eyes always seem to "smile". i dont know why. they just have that cute, smiley, bubbly look on thier faces. Am I crazy? lol. or do other people feel this way too.
Yes I agree...unless that rider has had previous experience with standies and understands their gaits (like their pacing and cantering) stuff like that =]
hey can you please tell me how to upload a movie to youtube from windows movie maker thanks and i toatally agree on the video i have a standardbred to :)
in the side tabb bar on Movie maker click "save to my computer" then follow the on screen instructions and then that file should be able to be played on Windows media player...the go onto youtube click "upload video" and select the one that you play on windows media player and then just follow the on screen instructions =] hope this helps
Well my standie was left in a paddock for 3 years of her life before i got her :S lol so basically there shes figured out all the paces on her own!! hehe...she trots fluently is developing a better canter and only ever paces when we turn at a canter because she finds that easier but we are getting better!
i agree! i have no idea why people think bad of standies. i used to have one and she taught me to ride and she took me to the state championships and barastoc horse of the year show.....
those horses are the best for trainability, temperament.... actually they are the best for evrything!!!!!! they are the best horses
Great video :) I have a standardbred that im currently training. And he is the sweetest horse ever! He only paces when its really windy and cant here me click my tongue (i train using voice aids) And he started cavelleti training with his previous owners whihc i am going to finish off. I have a girl at my pony club that hates standies but she fell in love with one and is trying to buy it!!
Hey... thats fantastic!!! yeh Im using voice aids for my standie Annie.... when i say Slow she will go down a gait so from a trot to walk :) its funny cuz sometimes she hits the skids right away!!
wow what a great film me and my sister have 3 standardbreds, we have train 2 of them to saddle but we are waiting for the time to train the other she hasn't been long off track and we need to break a lot of her old habbits, but anyway great film.
my brother has a standardbred she races , and when the racing season is over we ride and jump , standardbreds are the most amazing breeds they can do anything .
I work for a therapeutic riding clinic. We have a standardbred Dotty. She was an ex-racer. She is SO SWEET! She can be a bit pushy at times, but my god she's such an angel most of the time. I fell in love with her when i first met her. I looked at my boss and said "we have to get her!". She was offered to us free of charge, so i was kidna iffy...who gives away a perfectly sound 13 yr old horse for nothing? But now i'm so glad we looking into it! SHE'S A DOLL! I love standards now!
Yeh there are alot of standies that end up being given away when they're perfectly fine, and they can at times get pushy but as long as you let her know she cant get away with it...hehe my standie gets heaps pushy and threatens to nip and kick when you do up her girth...lol but i just tell her off and sometimes if she almost gets me i slap her neck....anyways Congrats on Dotty being great!! and yeah STANDIES ARE AWSOME!!
WOOO lol absolutly right!! i got my standie on the weekend and rode her the first time today since shes been mine =p and we walked trotted(she did pace a bit) AND SHE CANTERED!!!! =P i was so extatic i wasnt expecting she would but she did YAY
Do you have any suggestions on smoothing out an ex-racer's canter?
When the standie at work, Dotty, goes into a canter, she seems so...choppy and kinda seems like she is about to go into a hop.
We've yet to get her to canter under saddle...just a quick trot that is damn near impossible to sit (idk how to post-im a western rider...but i'm slowly learning!)
Well the only thing i can think of would be is to lunge her on it so she can find her rythemn and balance and then try it out under saddle...also when standies are first learning the canter they actually have four beats in it which is them trying to figure out what to do =P lol I hate that super fast crazy trotting that they do when you ask for a canter!! and WOO WESTERN ROCKS!!!! lol I LOVE IT!!
Tht is realy weird you kno. Evry Standardbred ive ridden as a dead smooth canter. Very flat & dead easy to sit to. Ass doesnt evn leave the saddle lol.
I've been working with her for the past 6 months on the lunge line with her canter, and just the last few weeks i've started her on the canter in the saddle. I was very surprised to discover that once I was in the saddle, and there was weight, she slowed down her canter ALOT. It seems more like a Western lope! On the lunge, she's a speed demon at the canter. It's so odd! But her canter is really smooth in the saddle!
You will probably find that she has a four beat canter at the moment, instead of a true three beat canter. This could be giving the effect of looking choppy.
I have a standie that looks almost EXACTLY like that black one who's name is Annie too!
Your friend rayer93 asked if I could give you some tips on how to get a standie to canter. What I did was had her start a trot, and I started squeezing when I got to a corner(it's easier for them to get the lead comfortably on a corner). She started trotting really fast, but if you sit up and keep squeezing she may(like my horse did) break into a canter! --Next comment! :) (sorry, I talk too much! :)
amazing horses got one myself joining you on FB

Great video! I just LOVE standardbreds they are the best horses, we have 6.I hate how some people are all snotty about them and say they aren't good, but thats their loss. ilovetuff, although some harness racers are not the nicest to their standies there is also a big handful of them that love their horses and treat them just as well as any of us do.

i know a standardbred mare who is black, and i love her soo much! but every day i know that her owners may sell her and ill never she her again!!! how much i love standardbreds i hate harness racing!!! they treat the horses like a big pile of worthless pennies!

Great video. I am a proud owner of a standardbred!

But, standies are great horses but they arent the best for first time horse owners the require a lot more exercise. Great vid.
HorseObsession23 3 years ago
Yes I agree...unless that rider has had previous experience with standies and understands their gaits (like their pacing and cantering) stuff like that =]
cowgirl7894 3 years ago
actually there pefect for first time horse owners, as long as they have a paddock to run in theyl love it!

she was a pacer, and so smart..... it took about 2 weeks to get her to be trotting fluently. yours?
goldpolaris1234 3 years ago
Well my standie was left in a paddock for 3 years of her life before i got her :S lol so basically there shes figured out all the paces on her own!! hehe...she trots fluently is developing a better canter and only ever paces when we turn at a canter because she finds that easier but we are getting better!
cowgirl7894 3 years ago
i agree! i have no idea why people think bad of standies. i used to have one and she taught me to ride and she took me to the state championships and barastoc horse of the year show.....
those horses are the best for trainability, temperament.... actually they are the best for evrything!!!!!! they are the best horses
goldpolaris1234 3 years ago
Yay! thanks for commenting... i completely agree with you standies rock :P lol...was your standie an ex pacer or trotter?
cowgirl7894 3 years ago
Great video :) I have a standardbred that im currently training. And he is the sweetest horse ever! He only paces when its really windy and cant here me click my tongue (i train using voice aids) And he started cavelleti training with his previous owners whihc i am going to finish off. I have a girl at my pony club that hates standies but she fell in love with one and is trying to buy it!!

Yeh there are alot of standies that end up being given away when they're perfectly fine, and they can at times get pushy but as long as you let her know she cant get away with it...hehe my standie gets heaps pushy and threatens to nip and kick when you do up her girth...lol but i just tell her off and sometimes if she almost gets me i slap her neck....anyways Congrats on Dotty being great!! and yeah STANDIES ARE AWSOME!!
cowgirl7894 3 years ago

TeddyOConnorTribute 3 years ago
WOOO lol absolutly right!! i got my standie on the weekend and rode her the first time today since shes been mine =p and we walked trotted(she did pace a bit) AND SHE CANTERED!!!! =P i was so extatic i wasnt expecting she would but she did YAY
cowgirl7894 3 years ago
Do you have any suggestions on smoothing out an ex-racer's canter?
When the standie at work, Dotty, goes into a canter, she seems so...choppy and kinda seems like she is about to go into a hop.
We've yet to get her to canter under saddle...just a quick trot that is damn near impossible to sit (idk how to post-im a western rider...but i'm slowly learning!)
emilyXevil92 3 years ago
Well the only thing i can think of would be is to lunge her on it so she can find her rythemn and balance and then try it out under saddle...also when standies are first learning the canter they actually have four beats in it which is them trying to figure out what to do =P lol I hate that super fast crazy trotting that they do when you ask for a canter!! and WOO WESTERN ROCKS!!!! lol I LOVE IT!!
cowgirl7894 3 years ago
Tht is realy weird you kno. Evry Standardbred ive ridden as a dead smooth canter. Very flat & dead easy to sit to. Ass doesnt evn leave the saddle lol.
xLuv2Chevyx 2 years ago
I've been working with her for the past 6 months on the lunge line with her canter, and just the last few weeks i've started her on the canter in the saddle. I was very surprised to discover that once I was in the saddle, and there was weight, she slowed down her canter ALOT. It seems more like a Western lope! On the lunge, she's a speed demon at the canter. It's so odd! But her canter is really smooth in the saddle!
emilyXevil92 2 years ago
You will probably find that she has a four beat canter at the moment, instead of a true three beat canter. This could be giving the effect of looking choppy.
xLuv2Chevyx 2 years ago
On my first try for a canter, I leaned forward, which made it difficult for her to canter. So, I sat up, and she cantered! :) GOOD LUCK!
I <3 STANDARDBREDS!!!
horsey683 3 years ago
I have a standie that looks almost EXACTLY like that black one who's name is Annie too!
Your friend rayer93 asked if I could give you some tips on how to get a standie to canter. What I did was had her start a trot, and I started squeezing when I got to a corner(it's easier for them to get the lead comfortably on a corner). She started trotting really fast, but if you sit up and keep squeezing she may(like my horse did) break into a canter! --Next comment! :) (sorry, I talk too much! :)
