  • Hearing of teh sad death of Davy Jones got me thinking about Mike Nesmith's solo recordings. I love this song and I haven't heard it for years. Thanks for posting it.

  • I remember when Nickelodeon played Rio on a show called Pop Clips, hosted by Michael Nesmith in the late spring 1981. It was just before the launch of MTV, that was owned then by the same company as Nickelodeon and The Movie Channel, Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Corporation.

  • Got the vinyl album "From A Radio Engine To The Photon Wing" from whence this came (and uploaded a few tracks from it). I adored this song, it's so underrated but as long as it is listended to and appreciated, gems like this will never fade. A classic!!!

  • I guess I was lucker than most in that we had a free form FM station in Philadelphia in the 70's and 80's that played just about anything they wanted. This was one of the favorites when it fist aired. I have not heard it in years. Thanks for posting.

  • Great track from an under-rated album.

  • Mikey at his very, very best.

  • This was the audio recored off the betamax video of said song! Well played , Romeo!

  • Michaels second greatest achievement one step behink Joanne.

  • Very well written track. Mike does have a way with music and with words. Way to go Dude.

  • Michael Nesmith es un gran compositor y músico ex integrante The Monkees. Su música y su manera de cantarla es de lo mejor de todos los tiempos. Soy un seguidor de su trabajo. Vicente Gramcko, periodista y compositor venezolano.

  • I've got this disk and three of his first three other LP's, unopened, waiting for the day when I've worn out the first set....I never got into disco, but this just makes me flow and dreamy...this album is a classic Nez trip into the new, unknown, trippy.

    ...reno? no rio...

  • God, I have looked for this song fro so long!!! Great stuff :)

  • Kinduv makes me cry, crap mike got old and his didn't

  • Comment removed

  • A true classic

  • Apropos nothing, his mother invented liquid paper (Tippex) and sold out to Gillette in 1980 for 48 million

  • "Reno, why Reno?" lol

  • Michael -- loved this since about 1980 -- nor '81 whenever -- it is always been my song of anything is possible -- escape -- wander, or just do the best next thing -- thank you for this --I am 61 now-- but at 31 or 32 I loved it so much -- I hope you never lost that spirit-- I'm now 61 -- I just might go to Rio -- this song riased my spirits on many occasion Love you! Hugs Lyn

  • @drlynmar I'm a bit older than you but it's raised my spirits too! See you on Copacabana beach

  • @computerrage That beach must be in Rio -- went to your page and saw Buffy St. Marie and heard "until it's time for you to go" for the first time in forty years. I used to have that album in college -- thanks for the memory, she is now on my page also.

  • I like to listen to this great song, followed by Aloha by Walter Hyatt (Uncle Walt's Band) and then Peter Allen's Rio. Great stuff.

  • @jusomeguy I knew Walter very well in Nashville. He was my friend. Thank you for saying his name and the band. Not alot left.T

  • This is a great song. Heard it on a Belgium radio station. Michael had a very innovative combination of sounds and rhythms going here. Thanks for posting ..

  • 1313ginger, maybe it's Mike Nesmith's connection to the Monkees that has kept his solo stuff a little less than celebrated, the album this is from, (From A Radio Engine To The Photon Wing) is great all the way through, and the segway from Rio into Casablanca Moonlight is just beautiful, a pity he is not recognised for all the great stuff he has produced.

  • @stolly57 I agree...well said. I never thought about it but I think you right...it's his association with the monkees that kept him from being really recognized. Maybe if the monkees were taken more seriously, so would he have been...maybe, not sure.

  • i love this so much takes me to a nicer place

  • I have this on a vinyl 45...... such a cool tune, good to hear it again. Have to get my turntable out of mothballs.

  • I remember playing this on the radio. Not many people did.

  • Still a fab song,,,,still love to hear it.

  • I've always loved Nesmith's songs.

All I wish is that someone would upload his NAVAHO TRAIL

  • @TheRedPenn Check out my uploads...... and there it will be!!!!

  • i have always enjoyed listening to this. I bought it on vinyl when it first came and thought the whole album was very very good. It's always a pleasure to listen to and all the music of"the Nez" brings a smile to my face.

  • Got to be one of my Guilty Pleasure records from the 70s

  • I probably wont listen to this again.........but then again I just might.

    Love it.

  • Hey, this IS happy music - give me a touch of the old EPNS and a couple of beers. Life is good!

    Stubend

  • still excellent to hear

  • this is a great song

  • this is a great song

  • I like every one of his songs. He is very underrated.

  • Great song,I have newer heard it before. Mike Nesmith is a fantastic singer

  • Flying to rio was a film made by RKO in 1933. There are many references in the original Elephant Parts video ( which as far as I know was the very first music video ever made). Nesmith was a comic genius, and this was his masterpiece. See the original, it is hilarious and charming. I am sure the crew had a ball making it.. "Not Reno, Rio de Genero".

  • Great job MIke,I love your music -

  • The video clip of this song is hilarious, but I'm kinda digging just the audio studio track...love the airport sounds and waves! Like a mini vacation!!

  • Is there an "Elephant Parts" soundtrack?? Awesome songs!! Great memories!! See guys, it ain't so bad being over 30 sometimes :)

  • After a crap day pour a nice drink and play this- volume up-and amen !-all's well !!

  • @eluvian AMEN to that!

  • why won't youtube let me post comments anymore?

  • Are you for real? If they don't let you post comments, the one I am replying to right now would not exist.

  • sorry,I guess it takes days for my comments to appear. You tube does not like my point of view on real issues relating with the political. You have to understand who owns and runs this site

  • I'm a seeker of wisdom. Tell me in detail who runs the site. I'd like to know.

  • can not understand why so few have rated this wonderful funky song, wave breaks and all. After all these years it is still awsome.

  • It might just get a new lease of life now.

  • @1313ginger Love it love it love it!!! Great bit...... "Reno? Why Reno?", "Not Reno, dummy. RIO, Rio de Ginero"!!! Classic!!

  • @1313ginger Beguiling!

  • don't know why but i just love this song !! xx

  • This was released in 1976. Sounds like Mike influenced Jimmy Buffet.

  • This sunday afternoon is what I needed.... Mellow as F**K!

  • I remember this song when it was first broadcast. Terry Wogan used to play constantly on Radio 2. I like it.

  • This is one of my 'happy' songs, meaning when I'm in a really good mood I'll catch myself singing it.

  • My dad used to sing this as a lullabye to me and my sisters <3

  • I've always loved that bum bass note, when he thought it was a turnaround!!

Check it out at 1:12. In later released versions the fluff is covered up.

  • ha ! imagine that <<<i never caught that but your right ,funny

i play bass too......love the bass work on shelly's blues and realease 2 great nez tunes

  • wish i could fly down to Rio....... : - )

  • Bring back the original clip , it was gorgeous.

  • Whoever has the original clip, plz upload it again. I agree.

  • This tune has been in my head all day long. I played it this morning while getting ready for work. It makes me want to get up and move. LOL.

  • This song pops into my head every once in a while. :) I bet my brother still has his First National Band albums!

  • great song love it,i remember it being relesed all those years ago

  • great song still have the 45

  • love this... but never been... De jinero my sister can't say it either

  • Does anyone realise that it was Mike's mum who invented liquid paper....true! Unfortunately she drank some and wrote herself off (untrue)

  • not untrue

  • Reno, why Reno...? not Reno Johnny... Rio! ..Rio Dejenaro.. I love it....

  • unfortunetly I never got a chance to see him here in the UK. But I am glad to say I bought most of his Solo LPs. Pity he never came back over here since the 80s.

  • I`ve been trying to locate this particular song for some time, at last I`ve got it; I like it.

  • Me too

  • Good track. Nice to hear it again. I wasn't a fan of the Monkees, but I reckon Nesmith had a lot of talent.

Greetings to you all from wonderful Western Australia!

  • Great to listen to after all these years! Reno? No...RIO!

  • Love it,love it love it

  • such a undervalued american talent.

  • You are right. He must have been so frustrated in the early days of the Monkees, when he wasn't taken seriously.

  • Nice to see a nesmith fan! I mean besides the

Monkee's. He such a creative force. Thanks for the post.

  • Thanks for putting this up. This great tune makes it onto the net every now and again but then the copyright big brothers usually tear it down. Viva rio!
