I find a striking resemblance between Robert WIlliams and Joe Coleman. Both decided to use the low brow comic way of painting and both explore their psyche and that of their protagonists.
Saw a show of his work in Manhattan a few years ago. Both Joe and Whitney were at the gallery, and I was really psyched to see her walking around for the entire hour I was there, studying the paintings on display as closely as the rest of the people in the gallery. I was moved by the fact that despite living with the work, she still finds reasons to return to the paintings again and again. Joe Coleman is a generous artist!
Thank you so much for this! I think Coleman's just GREAT!!! Always interested in what he is doing... Fascinating!- I first encountered his work during my time studying at art school. I had got hold of Coleman's book "Original Sin" and, alongside my medieval art studies, specifically, the "Illumination Manuscript" artists, Joe Coleman's work and vision Really came alive for me; Coleman, our very own! contemporary manuscript Illuminati.... He's FANTASTIC!!!
