Damn, what a great raspy voice! I love it ! I hope he makes a lot more songs before he leaves us because there has to be more of this. May be sing till he's 99.
you know, I discovered Tom years ago around '85 and I was in the middle of a very physically and emotionally painful upheaval. But I see no reason that he would not appeal to someone who has never been though any of that. We all come from somewhere and to be human is to suffer. So if you dig Tom, cheers, there is plenty of time in life to suffer. But it is not required to dig on Waits.
I used to sing this to my daughter as a lullaby. I know I'm a weird dad but it worked and it was the only song I could remember the words to. Sung in a low gentle voice it has a nice tune and is calming. Very nice video! Is it a Tom official or did you make it?
none other but tom waits can ever get that low down gospel blues sound. gravel voice and harmony in the background makes me soooo happy, yet also cry. one of the best songs. with of course the exception of all his other ones that are, none the less just as equal :)
@JoeSmithAu check out "pony" also by tom waits on the same album (if you havent already). my favourite line-" ive lived on nothing but dreams and trainsmoke" genius.
I woke up with iJustine in bubble gum flavor, I just wanna date her, I would never trade her. Wanna take her dancing but I ain't got no money, ain't got no money, no I ain't got no monay!
It was an ex who introduced me to his music. As well as sparklehorse. And I was very much taken with his love of these lyrics and soul of the music. He was a the sweetest boy ever. And I am soo sorry Joe. Love and thanks.
One thing about Waits - He only appeals to people who know what pain is. People who have been to hell and back. Whether it be physically, mentally or however else somebody can go down and parcially recover.
@mysteria31 Bollox! I haven't experienced significant pain in my life and I absolutly love all albums from this great man. The strength behind Waits is that he can get that such emotion into his songs that the listener is roped into that emotion whatever it happens to be.
@mysteria31 Bullshit. I haven't been through squat. Not only does he 'appeal' to me, I'm actually a bit obsessed by his abilities. He's amazing. One doesn't need to have been 'troubled' in some way to appreciate talent & artistry. Quit projecting.
@Herebebears once you go through something that fucks your life up then come back and say that. your lucky you havnt been through squat but once you have been youll appreciate it even more. sure you can appreciate without going through shit but if you have... its a whole different story

handymandan100 - You should hear John Prine's "The Hobo Song"( if you haven't already ). This my first time to hear Tom Waits' Cold Water. I love it.
Prine's Hobo is certainly up there with the best.
The best version of The Big Rock Candy Mountain is from the Oh Brother soundtrack.

@OneEyedSnowboarder I was just responding to:
"One thing about Waits - He only appeals to people who know what pain is. People who have been to hell and back."
I never said he couldn't be more appreciated by the traumatized. Don't read more into my comment than I wrote.
