I wonder if the milltiary'd treat one of my faith like the Boy Scouts did..telling a soldier that they're spiritually deficient bc they don't worship the *right* God.
"I'm sitting here on the Group W bench because you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the army and burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug?"
This is partially attributable to the chaplain corps being filled up with right wing conservative Christians. I think the military should ramp up chaplain recruitment among more "liberal" denominations, instead of allowing fundamentalist clergy filling up the chaplain ranks.
@historygeek2007 Yeah I don't think they should be even in the military....they should bring in civilians... I'm Active duty....Chaplin's are officiers that make big bucks...over 6 figures once they hit Captain and above....not sure why a Chaplin should have such pay or authority.
whatever. this is "news" to whom? for the record, i consider myself a card-carrying progressive, liberal & socialist. i also consider myself an honest person & this strikes me as essentially no different from most of the bullshit "news" stories on fox. soldiers & warriors across many cultures, since the beginning of history are & always have been superstitious. of necessity they'd have to be to do what they do. human beings need a "moral" rationale to kill other human beings. we aren't sharks.
I was in Iraq from March to September of 2008, I remembered that on Easter Sunday they had a huge set up in the chow hall including a statue of Jesus, and a large banner overhead reading "He is Risen." There is no way you can't say that the military doesn't have a religious bend.
@nicknufsik Absolutely, I'm in the Military too...notice how every ceremony in the beginning the Chaplin gives a prayer??? On your dog tags it must say your religious preference.

Our government is now in the hands of a military which thinks that Jeebus is a real, live person. OH MY FUCKIN GOD!

I'm not against Christianity and I'm not always against war, but I don't get why people think Christianity and combat are so compatible.
WWJD?
Not fight.

So before they slaughter civilians, rape children, or torture innocents they have to be in good spiritual condition?

You gotta love Theocracy...unless it calls for helping the POOR like Jesus says. That part doesn't count, I suppose.
