Pointless for laptops as it will reduce contrast in word processing. I don't want to see through my laptop screen. White or off white paper, black text for readability please. What next? Transparent books or e readers?
emphasising the word 'your imagination' makes me think of, "we have no real application for this, our innovation is useless..." Doubt it, we'll ever see one home application of this in our lifetime. :)
dont get me wrong its pretty cool, but i really dont see the big attraction about having a transparant screen on your laptop..it would annoy me, plus is the picture quality as good as a regular monitor..?
I don't like people on the other side of the screen being able to see the information or what i have pulled up as well. Last thing I need is to be sitting in a cafe and the guy next to me being able to see personal information or financial info I'm typing on my monitor. It looks really cool, but for me security would be an issue.
@giventofly3337 The O.L.E.D pixil shoots light photons forward. As seen as an example in the video when they look dirctly behind the screen you cant interpret any information thats being displayed. So "no you cant see any information from behind" as matter of fact the manufacturer would have to put the same passive-matrix on the other side to see anything clearly or at all!
True, but if they ever do sell a transparent laptop, I believe they will give an add-on that locks behind the screen to cover it up. Have you seen how it looks like from the behind? It's a lot harder to see the image from the back than it is to see the image from upfront. Basically most of the Light is shun directly to the user while limiting light shunning from behind.
Sorry, guys. It's not crosshaired for shooting people (at least not yet). But things like GPS streetlevel views would come alive and be much more informative in conjunction with a camera facing away. Turn it toward a building and info would pop-up (already apps for cellphones); face recognition improvements & a few years from now no one will be anonymous. Isn't Google already trying to make all images searchable? A lot of change comin'.
This is one of the most amazing things I've seen.. We go from huge boxes which can only play pong to tiny transparent screens where you can play on. It's freaking amazing.
I bet, in 10 years the Ironman computer isn't a dream anymore!
Scary shit, no longer a safe haven behind my screen? Without doubt a great tech achievement, but let's get serious: what is the f****n use man?!? Oh great, I can see my wall? Ceiling? OK boss coming up the corridor, hmmmmm...;-))

Now... we just need a good technology to show an image dependant on viewing angle. I would love to see an analog solution to this.

I want to see how opaque you can make it. It could be very distracting to see through it. Can the display create a completely opaque area?
I suspect it can do so by displaying a solid colour which is also bright enough. But what about darker colours or black areas?
The answer to this question will, in my opinion, largely dictate whether consumers ultimately want it or not.

This seems like a waste of tech on a laptop. It isn't THAT transparent. Not a very good job of selling it.
