@4errors Soaking for 20 mins in freshwater is fine. What is to be avoided is leaving them in freshwater overnight. Some people even suggest adding oatmeal or flour to the water! Never do this!
@TheRODNEYD707 Easiest way is to steam them. Add a small amount of water to a pan, add the mussels and boil for 3 mins. The mussels will open and gently cook. You can them remove the mussels and use the water (with the liquer from the mussels) to make a sauce to pour over the cooked mussels. Enjoy!

you have to preserve mussels in a cotton cloth and in a fresh place (low refrigerator).

If they're still closed after going in the pot alive, I just take out the cooked ones and cook the unopened ones longer until they open.

Unopend may indicated the mussel is dead or merely uncooked. Either way it is sensible to discard unopened mussels once they are cooked.
