How sweet of you to post this video! You are absolutely right and it is a positive video. Years ago, the farmer was the nicest person you'd ever meet! My grandfather owned a dairy (delivered door to door); and when people couldn't pay their bill; he'd say, "It's time to butcher a cow!" He'd go to the homes that owed him money and hand out beef. (for free) When he retired at 55 years old, he washed away all debts to him and gave his dairy to his children. THAT'S COUNTRY!
Yeah, never forget your wallet at home when you are at a store. Too far to drive home in the boonies to get it. Expect 12 hour days to work that garden, milk those goats, plus housework, fixing things, building/repair fences, tractors, gates, etc. Sun up till sun down, no matter if you work a job off the land or work on your own place. Be ready to be tired. Want to sit on a swing sipping iced tea? Buy a condo with a nice patio and grow food in containers and rabbits in the back yard for meat
Scutter4Christ...thank you for your high recommendation of Carla Emery's book. We are Don and Pam DeLong...yes, Don was married to Carla. If folks order from Carla's website, we are the ones who mail out the book(s). All sales are appreciated!
To see what Don is doing now, search "SuperMPG" in YouTube. He talked a lot about Hydrogen, and now he's doing something about it!
Scutter...praise the Lord for you are doing...keep up the good work.
Best venison receipe? Easy...Do it the bible way...in olive oil...good ol' boy taught me that one...tried everything written above and gagged...OLIVE OIL....Isaac was a happy man
LOL, dont laugh. I think that it's going to come to that before too long. And I am not a big fan of deer meat. But if my belly is growling........... :o)
Deer meat can be good if it is processed immediately and correctly. Then ya gotta cook it right.
Being an animal lover, I might feel bad about killing a deer in the garden. Kinda takes the fairness of the hunt out of it. But as you said...if we are starving.......
You mentioned deer eating the garden.....we had an older gentleman come in and talk to us yesterday. He told us an old trick that works for him. Sprinkle human hair clippings around the border of your yard, and supposedly it keeps the deer out. (Re-apply after rains).
The best country life would be where you do not have to deal with code enforcement trying to extort you for money. In the suburbs/city people cannot fix anything because Big Brother says you cannot. I like to get stuff done myself, and having to get permission for every step and pay dearly for it is a road to nowhere. As for convenience, who needs a grocery when you have food at hand. I grow veggies on my roof and fish whenever possible. Stuff? I have engines and tools in the house.
Hello Scutter ! I have lived out in the country for twenty years . I am a tool maker/machinist by trade, and I consider myself VERY LUCKY for that education, and NEVER MORE THAN NOW !. I KNOW that the things that you are saying are TRUE AS IT CAN BE !! Country life is no place for "Fancy City FOLKS" It requires a strong back and a stronger will ! However, I feel much safer and more in control here with this HELL ON EARTH we are heading into !!
thank you so much for posting this, because I am one who's very much considering moving into the country. (I was born and raised in nyc, so this definitely applies to me)

@mythic89 I don't understand what you are disagreeing with him about. He's really telling it like it is. Nothing was exaggerated.

I've never had a gamey tasting deer.
Kill it, drain it, cook it, eat it.
I hate city folk complaining of the country smells. It smells good to me.

You can soak it in buttermilk over night and it will take the game taste out. Or most of it atleast.
