My Great-Great-Great Uncle was killed on the landing at Gallipoli. His father (38 and brothers, 18 and 19) went on to be killed at the western front. Beginning of hell, birth of a nation....
Yay Lighthorse, reading a bokk about them at the moment Chauvel and his mounted infantry rocked the first world war. If I go to full time army i'd defs try for the Queensland Mounted Infantry, for traditions sake :)
It's an honor to grace a video of a real hero. Your grandather was a genuine hero. I think they had a charcter based on you grandfather in "The Lighthorsemen" movie.
Mate, I suggest that you do a bit more research before you make ignorant comments like that, or someone may just label you a hypocrite. Allenby made the speech because the Turks, being Muslim, did not allow religious freedom. The modern State of Israel in which Beersheba sits, has always allowed religious freedom. It is a democracy, unlike its adjacent Arab neighbours; furthermore no Arabs were dispossessed in Israel. Don't use your Grandfather's name to support your bigotry.
unlike when the jordenen ruled jerusalem and demolished singouges and prevented the jew from accssing the westren wall the Israeli state gives all the right of religious to the moslems at the golden mousk and the christians at the chruches.
so do me a favor and go peddell your antismitsim some where else.
Magnificent posting, galvinpt !! Congrats to you !! And I silently, reverently 'dips me lid' to both you, and your ancestor, Thomas O'Connor .. in tribute to him and his role as a Light Horseman. P.S. My great-uncle (Mom's uncle) was a soldier in the 3rd Aust'n Division, AIF, in France, WW1. As I am told by my family elders, tragically he was KIA, merely weeks before the November 1918 Armistice. Lest We Forget !!
cant help but think of breaker morant..scapegoats of the empire! shoot straight ya bastards,,dont make a mess of it..been wanting to read the book on beersheeba and breaker morant..soon i hope
Gen Allenby walked bareheaded into Jerusalem at the head of his force sometime after the battle of Beersheba, issued a proclamation of free worship and freedom to all. Its a disgrace to him and to his soldiers - including the light horse- that this is no longer so and that the inhabitants at that time are dispossessed of their lands.

This is a beautiful video. Are you part of a Light Horse reenactment group? I am part of a one. We participate in the ANZAC Day parade on horseback and in the dawn service on foot. we wear the uniforms with so much pride and i just feel so privileged to represent these soldiers. It means everything to me.
you make sure your kids know and your grand kids (if you have any).
did you go over there for the reenactment?
i am 32 and very patriotic, my grand father served ww2, my uncles did vietnam, and it saden's me to know that most of my generation and the teens of today do not give a rats arse about what our forefathers did for us.
its up to people like you and i to make sure their legend and memory continues,
yeah i know what you mean some people just can't care that so many people risked there lives and died for this country to be free and thats how they repay them it's outragous...im 15 and when i turn 17 i plan to join the army reserve and then when i turn 18 to join the army to show more respect and to protect my country like all the diggers right from the begining up to todays conflicts.

The tune is Song of Australia, and sung by Peter Dawson.
The music was writen by C.Linger and the Lyrics by C.J.Carlton. I think about the 1880's. It should have been our National Anthem.

The ANZAC were a key element in the war. You must be proud to be of great lineage. What brigade/regiment did he serve?
Beersheba is such a glorious moment in military history. It's tale should never be forgotten.
Cheers to the Lighthorsemen!
