The thing with more underground bands like this are hard to find. They are awesome. If you like this look at Deathspell Omega. I might upload some of their stuff.
I think mainstream bands are less interesting than some unknown bands.
Okay Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Marduk are nice to listen, but you don't "feel" the music, like you do with many other bands.
From France, the band Défaillance is amazing too !
Some good BM bands are Deathspell Omega (I don't like a lot), Mortifera, Celestia, Alcest, Seth, Austere, Ancestral, Gris, Niflheim, Nagelfar, Vargnatt etc.
I particularly like Deathspell Omega, Niflheim is good, I will have to check out Défaillance, and if you like Depressive Black Metal I would recommend Nocturnal Depression, and well of course Peste Noire. And I agree that underground bands can be very good, if not better than the mainstream bands. Much more atmospheric, and emotional.

interesting, I dont know much black metal except for the mainstream, deicide, gorgoroth, behemoth etc. I'll have to check out more from these guys

I know Nocturnal Depression, I liked it for a time, but it didn't crushed me a lot.
Gris/Niflheim is amazing, high level of french language in their lyrics, very interesting songs, great vocals. Definitively a great great band !
Défaillance is very strong BM especially their last album "Comtemplation Misanthropique de l'humanité"
I generally like DSBM, but also when it's more atmospheric like I Shalt Become for example.
