My GOD he's a fantastic singer...sometimes he pronounces things a little strangely, but he makes up for it by being amazing in every other possible way...going up the octave during the "Have to know my lord" section is brilliant (and REALLY hard)
Drew is the man - definitely a unique twist. If you like seeing "masculine" versions of this song, check out the video I posted of Kurt Bowen doing it...he even has all the high notes!
Yes, there is an officially released recording of this performance. Search the internet for the 2005 Vienna Concert Cast. There are also several unofficial recordings all over YouTube.
Gillian was the best, he sounded like Christ, the way I picture Christ sounding. Like a man,a real man. some of these guys sound wimpy!! Ted was amazing, second to Gillian. Would have loved to hear Geoof Tate sing it in his prime!!!
but common steve sounded like barry gibbs. of course. if your angry your gonna scream i mean comeone. and his performance is so heart felt. you can feel the anger.
if you think this performance was good, then you should watch Drew Sarich in this video. Yes, i know, it's the same guy, but this performance is ten times better. Trust me.
The song starts out with confusion and then leads into anger and ends with sadness...trust me my high school just did this in the spring and Drew is performing this perfectly...if only our Jesus could scream like that
Great vocal performance from a great Broadway and West End performer. But, I must say I dislike how he plays the part with so much anger during this song. It's just a personal opinion, and I love Drew just as much as y'all, but I still don't like it. So please don't pounce on me. I personally think that it should have more emotion than anger...more, sadness. Like he's feeling he has to die...and he's sad about it (read Luke :])
Gethsemane is sung by Jesus. Drew has played Jesus and Judas at various points in his career. In 2005, he participated in two productions of JCS, one as Jesus (this one) and one as Judas.
He has a cool voice. His high notes are cool, but Neeley still has the best scream. Danny Zolli is awesome as well. Everybody likes different things. the metal, angst-filled take is definitely a different approach. rock out, Drew Sarich.
Oh I most certainly have, and it's one of my favorite versions, to be sure.
There's just something about Steve Balsamo though.
I think Drew is absolutely amazing, and he is without a doubt my favorite singer. But as far as this show is concerned, for me it is Drew = Judas / Steve = Jesus
Steve loses something in his live performances. Although I love the smoothness he has. However I'm a fan of the idea that this was original a rock album and I want rock voices for everybody.
Therefore Drew wins for my Jesus. As for Judas...Carl all the way. I actually like Serkan Kaya better than Drew...acting wise and most of the time vocally. I would like to say that I think Raul Esparza would rock the shit out of Judas as well.
I just think Drew Sarich is utterly amazing. End of.
''If you argue this, you are wrong.''
Just because its your opinion doesnt mean that its automatically right. Who are you to say who's right and who's wrong? Theyre all strong in different places.
Have seen and heard them all: Jesuses and Judases. Sarich rules. In my mind, Jesus was quite pissed off at Gethsemane, the night before he got arrested and crucified. A tormented person indeed, and Sarich does it perfectly. With all my respect to Gillan, Neeley, Balsamo, Carter, Bach, Ball, Crawford, and many many others...
No one else even comes CLOSE? Check out Jesus Christ Superstar - 1973 with Ted Neeley! And Steve Balsamo does a pretty good Gethsemane too!! This technology really sucks on this one.
nope. ted neeley is pretty good, steve balsamo is awesome, but no one even comes remotely close to drew. have u heard the full version of his gethsemane?
I saw JCS on tour last month, Jesus was played by the guy who originally played him in the movie in like the 70s... Ted Neely, I think. He seemed like a very nice old old oooold man. It was kind of disturbing to watch- I was front row center & it made the whole Mary/Jesus thing look like a young girl/creepy old man thing... & his voice just got lost next to the young vibrant cast... it was a shame, but then I think a lot of people were just there to see him. My point: Drew's so amazing!
I got the dates from the man himself. He's in JCS in Vienna on March 20th-22nd. Then he goes back to Les Mis, where he has extended through June. I run his message board. You can find updates there.
I heard about that. Hopefully we'll find some video and audio from that production as well. And I heard that Serkan Kaya is reprising the role of Judas?
Oh I've so wanted to see a video version of this performance!! So amazing. What a voice, what a passionate, modern performance. Thank you for posting this. I just wish the last section wasn't cut off! It's my favorite part.
Glad you like! I got a call that he's doing Jesus again this month in Vienna. Hopefully there will be some footage of that! I put the dates he told me on the message board.

I think his best strength is that he is NOT a musical theater singer. He's a rocker.

Fact:
Drew Sarich is awesome at everything he does. He is the best Judas ever. Tied with Carl Anderson.
If you argue this, you are wrong.
Fact:
Steve Balsamo is the best Jesus ever.
If you argue this, you are again wrong.
You can discuss favorites all you want, and I have no say. However, if you want bests, they have been clearly laid out.
