Whoa seeing her dressed as a girl is a little off-putting!! I've never seen her play a female character before! But of course, she does it beautifully!
I love this fast tempo. In my humble opinion, it just goes better with Graham's voice. It's like having a faster tempo for her with "ah, chi mi dice mai." Not only do I love the aria, but Graham does an EXCELLENT job in the recitative. Just listen to her powerful "Lasciami sola." I just ADORE that first note at 0:54!
Susan Graham in a DRESS!!! WOW! ("Sexy Lady," indeed!) She's so fantastic... she never fails to blow me away with her voice and her incredible stage presence. Long live the mezzos!!!
She is great. I wish I could have sung my Fiordiligis with her. He, guys do you ever heard Her CD of Reynaldo Hahn. her french is so good and the interpretation marvelous. What a great artist !
now THIS is singing! She is tearing it up! We need more of this! She sounds good, and is such a funny lady. Saw her emcee the MET finals a few years back and she was great. I really love her voice. Great sound, great top, great technique!
Oh thankyou for telling me this. I just got that production for Christmas and it really is quite wonderful (don't know which one I like more, it or this one, guess I can't judge since I haven't seen this one in full). Oh and yes, Ms. James does shift her voice to a tenor's in the Gardiner production, very surprising! Still, I'd like to see her here too anyways.
Wow, this was great, wonderful portrayal of Dorabella's drama queen attitude! Do you think that you could update the "in uomini, in soldati" aria from this production as well MUEZZAB? I'd love to see how Despina compares to all the other great singers here.
As far as I can tell, the Despina in this production is Eirian James. She can be heard on both the CD and DVD versions of Così that John Eliot Gardiner recorded in the early-to-mid-nineties (recently reissued, I believe), also with Trost as Ferrando.
Lovely dark sound, great stage presence, heaps of sass. Apparently the register she shifts to whilst playing the Notario on the Gardiner recording has a tenor tessitura, but do feel free to correct me.
Oh, thankyou for telling me. I just got that DVD for Christmas and it really is wonderful! And yes, she does shift her register down to a rather silky tenor voice as the Notario in that production and she pulled it off very well! But she looks different in this production doesn't she? I think it's the maid's cap, and she seems more reserved here too.
Oh well, I'd still like to see how Ms. James is here... I find this production highly intriguing.
Love this! Lol, gotta love some Dorabella dramatics. The maid's reaction when she throws the tray with the cups out the window is hilarious.

Well, Dorabella is having a panic attack. What do you expect? To have a slow tempo? It is supposed to be frantic!
