BTW, my left toenail was the problem. The Podiatrist drained the pus and blood out of the swollen part, cut off 30% of the ingrown side of my toenail down to the skin, then she applied some chemical that's supposed to stop that part of the nail from growing ever again. Not sure how bad your toe has to be to get the whole nail removed, but i know you can get your toe amputated if you're diabetic or if you let your infection spread for a very, very long time.

If your toe looks as bad as this, its time to get a Matrix. There's no remedies or antibiotics that can fix it. Just make an appointment at Kaiser and they'll fix your toe in 20 minutes. They just stick your toe 4 times with the needle to numb it and that takes about 10 minutes (the shots hurt like hell). The surgery takes about 5 minutes and its painless of course.

Mine was infected like that and then I was able to move the nail out of the area it was growing into and then I put hydrogen peroxide on it until it stopped fizzing. I then put some bacitracin on it and now all I have is an open sore but no pus.

At an early stage of infection, I start to rinse mine with water to wash off the puss, dry it and apply some regular antiseptic stuff meant for home treatment of small wounds. I do this a few times in a day for some time, and the infection is soon history.

Most ingrown toenails have nothing to do with hygiene. They're genetic when they reoccur. The problem comes from picking and trying to fix it yourself. I suffered for 6 years with recurring infections until I finally got the chemical burn to stop them permanently. Some people need to educate themselves before being judgmental pricks.

Ok, so I am the master of doing this at home. My toenails genetically curve in such a way that they will repeatedly cause issue. EVENTUALLY - a doctor lasered off the sides of both big toenails to keep it from reoccuring.

At one time - it was so bad that the nail punctured the bottom of my toe.

SO THIS IS WHAT YOU DO: IODINE and NEOSPORIN.  The combination of iodine, then covered with neosporin softens the nail considerably! it makes it easy to remove, painlessly.

Go get some iodine and some triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin) - apply the iodine directly to the crack in the toe - let it get down in there. THEN - cover it with the neosporin - making sure the neosporin kinda "seals" it all in.

Do this at night and in the morning. After several days of this the nail will become very flexible and bendy - making it easy to work with, and the iodine and ointment will have worked on/killed the infection.

no prob. also remember - there is a order to things - colored pus, green/yellow - still infected -- white pus - infection being fought, fairly successfully, -- signs of blood or just blood? -- infection is not in that area. Pus is your friend! it's white bloodcells that died fighting for you!

- once that nail is soft - do this: rubber band around the toe to cut off blood flow. Then, you can use a tweezers or whatever and with minimal pain lift the entire "wing" of the nail out. then cut straight back. clean up blood/pus. more iodine and neosporin. remove rubber band to get blood flow back and wrap toe in gauze. pain should be minimal. @Capolan The lift with tweezers does work. Especially, if the toenail is curving down to the bottom of the toe, just by lifting the nail up and straightening the edge about quarter Cm away from the side skin can fix the nail.

What this shmuck is doing is cutting away from the side the correct length, but he is forgetting the nail in the very back by the cuticle. .... very poor technique especially since he's had them 3 times. I've had my right ingrown for 7 years... almost gone though

Ingrown toenails actually have a pretty simple cure. Just use your nail-clippers to cut a V-shaped incision in the center of the ingrown nail. This will cause both sides of the nail to pull toward the center, and correct the ingrowth. You should experience relief from the ingrown toenail within a few hours of following this simple procedure.
