I heard Britten in a 1951 concert, and thought then what a superb accompanist he was. In this wonderful performance of the Arpeggione, he becomes the equal partner of the finest cellist in the world.
The best! Perfect tempo! Seems others play so fast, trying to impress with technique, that they loose the depth and breath of such a delicate and passionate piece of art.
Very impressive, I had no idea that Britten was such an accomplished pianist, what great interpretations of the the piano introduction and solo passages. He takes his time, which is something that is all to hard to do while under the pressure of a performance.
I also like Rostropovich's performance. His dynamics are amazing!
Wonderful piece of music and the sound of Rostro's cello.... is something else!
I highly recommend the version with Andreas Schiff and a wonderful Hungarian cellist. There you can actually see them playing (with eyes closed from beginning to end).
How great it is to hear a piece soulfully played by two great musicians and best friends.

The opening mood set by Britten and then answered by Rostropovich is one of the most beautiful things ever recorded.

My favorite performance of Arpeggione Sonata! Most romantic and melodious playing both of cellist and pianist.

I used to find this piece a technical minefield. Then I found an edition that transcribed some parts down an octave and it's no problem now lol.
