Superb job of training Lucy. I've heard that Cavs are very easy to train--did you find this to be the case with her? I'm considering picking up a puppy for my g/f's birthday in May.
@RobDog65 Thanks for the compliment. Lucy is the first dog I've trained so can't compare breeds. Key is repetition & a calm, submissive behavior in the puppy so it can focus.
my cavalier tries the Hold and take it but he has trouble getting it from his nose to his mouth he can some times get it. he is a black and tan with a little bit of white.
@cahbarnes - I make sure the treat is small enough for Lucy to grab it easily (I actually use a kibble with a flat bottom) and then I place it right on the black of her nose and press lightly to make sure she feels it. Give him 3-4 tries each day until he gets it. If he misses after a few attempts, then just move on to another trick so he can keep being rewarded and feel success. Eventually he will be able to judge how far to move his nose away and grab the treat.
@powergirl7ful -- most dogs are very food-motivated so go ahead and have a pocketful of tiny treats (or treat pieces) handy and reward every time your dog performs the trick you are asking for. If you watch my videos you will see that I am popping a tiny treat in Lucy's mouth after every trick. This keeps her motivated, and increases her enjoyment for doing tricks.
