Jean Arthur is my favorite classic movie actress besides Norma Shearer. This tribute to her was so well done I cried. A-mazing. Bubblewrap, dearest, please come back and continue your magic!!
@wellpastcaring Quite true. I actually named the video after the biography on Jean Arthur by John Oller. I do believe it is a reference to her private life because she never gave interviews and tried to stay as far away from the public eye as possible. I personally feel that Jean Arthur is very forgotten about in talking about classic film stars today.
I just love Jean Arthur and this is a nice tribute, but why is the vid called 'The Actress that Nobody Knew'? Arthur played opposite the greatest male stars of the day and was incredibly well known in her time. She was an actress that everybody knew.
I will always feel that shes very, very special speaking subjectively and with an obviously limited diminisional understanding . 'Just a vey Special actress, a real doll. Garry jones
It struck me when I watched this that Jean Arthur was rather like Katherine Hepburn but, whereas the latter is still well-remembered today, Jean is virtually forgotten. It's a shame, because she had a very warm personality, was equally as good in serious drama as comedy, and had a lovely speaking voice. This a fine tribute and makes me want to see her films again.
This is a very beautiful tribute! Going from silent footage to her just occasionally speaking is very effective! And I love the background music! Thanks very much for paying tribute to the actress who, in my opinion, is just as responsible for 'Mr Smith Goes to Washington" being an exceptional movie as Jimmy Stewart.
Beautifully done tribute to this under-appreciated actress. You captured Arthur's unique "je ne sais quoi" ---a special radiance all her own. Her body of work is so darn excellent---it's a crime she never got a lifetime achievement Oscar. I just finished reading Oller's biography & now have a new appreciation for aspects of her character of which I was never aware. Plus I'm happy to have located a copy of one of her few movies I'd not seen, "History is Made at Night." Can't wait to see it.
I'm serious when i say this. THE BEST LEADING LADY OF ALL TIME! she owned every scene she was in. she could handle the heavey stuff, the light stuff and everyhting in between. she held her own against cooper, stewart, the duke, milland, mcrea and grant. few lady's could do that. her comic time was and still is unmatched. she was quick and sure as hell handle the physical stuff.
Jean Arthur conveyed more with her eyes than any other actress of the Golden Age..........look at her face with the violin player from Mr. Deeds". She nailed every emotion. She rocked! She was the master of the delayed reaction. She needs to be remembered more: She was one of the most gifted actresses of the Golden Era!
I thought this was just wonderful! The music was so peaceful. Jean Arthur is totally forgotten and I feel she deserves remembrance because she truly was a great actress and she makes me want to love her more by her lovely personality on the screen and by her facial expressions on that gorgeous face. Thank you!
I'm playing Alice in "You Can't Take it With You" and my dream is to play Jean because they ought to make a biography about her. I'm practicing her voice, so I'll be ready when they do : )
She was definantely one of my favorite actresses and her biography is one of my favorite books. She was also Frank Capra's favorite actress and was his choice for Its a Wonderful Life. I also own several biographies on Capra including his autobiography and I always enjoy reading his stories and descriptions about her and her "voice of a thousand bells"
@runtateer just double checked, technically he wrote was "Low, husky - at times it broke pleasingly into the higher octaves like a thousand tinkling bells"
Stunningly beautiful. Recently I watched "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" shown on TCM and became more interested in this great actress. I wonder why her personal life was unlike some of the characters she played. I remember Shane as a young teenager and at that time was not particularly interested in her role - not so today. She's beautiful at .17 sec. The part at 1:28-1:41 is outstanding, which I've seen over and over. She should be given an Oscar posthumously.

This is so touching it makes me want to cry! She is my favorite actress and absolutely love all her movies and I loved her biography. Thank you for this video, it's beautiful
When I came to youtube to search for her, I was drawn to this video, "Jean Arthur, the Actress Nobody Knew." I thought maybe something would be revealed to me that explained the allure, and I think it was.
Your video is a beautiful and moving tribute to Jean Arthur. Thank you.
Bubblewrap, thanks for a great tribute to Jean. In my opinion she was the most beautiful woman who ever graced the silver screen. If I had seen The More The Merrier at the same age as she when she made that film I would have been on the train to CA to, by hook or crook, to meet her and sweep her off her feet. I think her inner beauty comes through in every role she played. I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Oller's book. God rest her immortal soul.
This is lovely! Jean Arthur was a fantastic actress, and sadly overlooked by today's audiences. I think she was one of the most natural and one of the most beautiful actresses ever put on celluloid.
I didn't know about this book. And since Jean Arthur is one of my all-time favorite actresses, I'll be running out to my local bookstore to pick up a copy. Thanks so much.
Quite late in life I discovered two words that would assure my watching a movie.
Two words that meant it would be funny or sad but always that it would have Class. And I never forgot them. Sometimes just saying them make me feel better aboutlife. The words are...Jean Arthur. Thank you bubblewrap1988 for such a well done tribute.
Thank you for this lovely tribut to the great Jean Arthur. She always wanted to be loved mostly for her work as an actress. Thank you John Oller for writing your wonderful book on her. Though Jean was insecure most of her time as a preformer, in her every day life she was a very caring happy fun person who loved jokes. That quality helped her to be such a good comedian. Thank you Jean for those many happy hours that you gave us on film.
I just discovered her by watching "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." I immediately was captivated by her screen presence. She's surely one of the best actresses to ever have lived. Beautiful tribute video.
I've read the book you mentioned in the info section and I agree, it's really wonderful. Jean is also one of my favorite actresses : ) thanks for posting.
@tapin4birdie Mr. Oller, I am reading your book as we speak and must agree with the maker of this beautiful video; your book is so insightful, thruough and well written. I don't know how to express my gratitude for all the information you have given on this wonderful and unique actress and woman. Thank you!
Ms Arthur gave magnificent performances in the The More The Merrier, Shane,
Ms Smith Goes To Washington, A Foreign Affair and other classics. Directed by George Stevens, Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder, and Frank Capra ( who adored her), Ms Arthur retired too early from the Screen. Years after her retirement Lucille Ball encouraged Miss Arthur to visit Desilu and watch TV shows being produced...to learn the new style. Ms Arthur went to Universal for a lame TV show quit the business.
Great star. Great Actress. Miss Arthur retired far too young, and along with Irene Dunne is the most glaring example of a great star that never won an Oscar. Jean Arthur was magnificent in The More The Merrier, Shane, Mr. Smith, Mr. Dees,
A Foreign Affair. Jean Arthur was directed by the best: Billy Wilder, George Stevens, Fran Capra who adored Jean Arthur. Miss Arthur returned in a weak Universal sitcom that CBS scheduled at 10 PM and yanked the show too soon.
wow, what a wonderful tribute to Jean Arthur! I think Jean was a wonderful and talented actress, but also a wonderful woman. The final sentence said by Jean make me sad, but all the video is sad... and i like that!
Jean Arthur is my favorite actress of all time. She is so lovely. She was in "You Can't Take It With You" and "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" with my favorite actor of all time Jimmy Stewart.

Very beautiful tribute to Jean; her personal life seemed to be so complicated and I think that she was able to use her acting as like a shield for that saddness.
MGM really had more stars than the heavens. Jean Arthur was one of the brightest. I love her!
