I experience MAJOR pressure in my nasal cavity and in my throat (by my liphnodes) when I do this exorcise. It doesn't start right away, just as I go on with the exorcise. I get so frustrated I stop doing it. I can't tell if I'm doing it right because it is so hard for me to do. HHEELLLPPP!!!
I've never had anyone write to me before about a problem like that. It could be that you're pushing out the air too hard. Think of the air escaping by itself rather than you having to push it out. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks a lot, I need to be able to hold my diaphragm expanded longer. Laying on my back eases the pressure too. Thank you for the advice it helped me so much!
Thank you for all your great exorcise! I am in a beginning vocal class at my college now and you really give me some great exorcise to work on. Directing air to the TOP of my two front teeth helps tremendously. I love vocal teachers so much!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELPFUL VIDEOS!!!
hai joy i nead your help i have a good voice people say i do but i seriously have a verry short range horribaly short lol well i have to realy push for even mid range songs and high range i just cant do it
when i try and sing its like even tho the song is actually in a comfortable range i have to push in order to reach it
It's good to keep it expanded for as long as possible when singing because doing so allows you to release the breath with more control, which in turn helps keep your throat from tightening.
Envision the sound as a golden thread that goes through your top 2 front teeth. It's that compact. Compress your breath to get that feeling. It's what will produce a BIG sound. More air doesn't make for more voice so try to feel the sound like that golden thread going out of your mouth through your teeth.
Sorry it took so long for me to reply to your question. The answer is, yes, you can improve. Not sure exactly what you are doing because I can't find a video of you singing. Do you have one?
Technically, we breath only into the lungs, but I think you're asking about using the diaphragm. There's a great graphic on my website that shows what happens:
Great question. The answer is as long as you can. Keep challenging yourself to increase it by 1 second each time you do it. I've seen people get up to 2 minutes and more. Everything you can do to increase your breath power helps.
hey u said the longer u keap the better ur vocals get so i wanted to ask u what would be the idol or good time to keap this leaky tire for for heavy metal vocals??by the way ivisit ur site regularly but most of it is under construction :(
Sorry about the "under construction" on my site. I do everything myself so it all takes a lot of time. But I'm hoping to get some help one of these days so I can help more people with their voice. Do the leaky tire as often and long as you can to build up your lung capacity.
how come when i breath out im supposed to keep the diaphragm out??? didnt you say that when i breath out i put the diaphragm in? (in the dog pant) or is it just for that exercise?
and do i inhale with my nose? or with my mouth too? thanx!!!
Good questions. Yes, the diaphragm naturally goes "in" as you exhale. What I mean by keeping it out as you exhale is that you don't want it to "collapse" to fast. The more focused your breath is, the more power you will have for the tone. Some people say to inhale with the nose, some say with the mouth. I personally use both but do not do it consciously.
I'm truly grateful that it's helping you. Also, you've probably read that I encourage everyone to use the resources on my website and tell all their friends and family about what's available through all these things.
What an extraordinarily generous gift your singing lesson videos are! I especially like this exercise.
I would love to see a lesson from you on expanding one's vocal range. What is the lowest note that people sing in their head voice? Or does that depend on where their chest voice ends?
I am also somewhat confused as to what a "classically trained" singer is.
I will go check out your website to see if I can find answers to these questions....
Thanks! Think of vocal range as 1 voice from high to low rather than head or chest. I tell people it's like driving a manual stick shift: you have to learn how to use the clutch properly to get from 1 gear to the next without choking the engine. Classically trained generally refers to someone who has studied what is called Bel Canto technique. Pop singer will often have a voice coach who is classically trained to help them so that they won't lose their voices from overuse or poor vocal habits.
Joy, it's so great of you to share your knowledge... a question for you: when I do this exercise I tend to experience tension in the throat. Any ideas? Also, Where do you stand in the whole "keep the rib cage expanded" vs. "feel support in the lower abdominal, back, and side muscles"?
Thanks. Tension in the throat is a very common problem and often comes from a tight neck and tight shoulders. I heard about a new approach the other day that seems to work really well. When you inhale, pretend that you are breathing in through your armpits. I know it sounds bizarre, but it seems to work for people. Expanded rib cage vs other? I think you have to do it all.
I am having a lot of troubles to talk now, I have to do much effort to pronounce a simple word, my neck's tension is so high. Do you know how I can to overcome this problem? tell me more about that new approach, thanks in advance.
I noticed that you're a professor. Often, teachers have vocal problems because they have to speak for so many hours per day and no one has trained them how to use their vocal cords properly for such long periods of time. How long have you had trouble with this tension? Have you seen a doctor about your voice?
Yeah I'm so glad you're back. You're a Joy to watch, Joy. You're the only one I've subscribed to. Watching and learning is a dozen times easier, fun and effective than reading. You're a great teacher.
I just saw that YouTube had NOT posted my comment to you! So frustrating when they do that! Anyhow, I'll thank you again because it's people like you that make what I'm doing worthwhile. I figure that if I can help at least 1 person in this world, I'll have done a good job, so your kind comments make me feel valued. Thanks!

Hi! I have a question: when we breathe in (before doing the exercise), should we only breathe into our stomach, into the lungs or both?
Thank you!
