How about a variation on the nail on the stick method? Instead of a simple common nail you would use a spiral nail. If that doesn't have enough hold you could file ratcheted notches in it so you could pick up the can and it wouldn't fall off.. After that it would be relatively easy to simply pull the can off the modified nail with your hand. Food for thought.
