  • I'm reading a wonderful book about her; "The China Lover" by Ian Buruma. She was Japanese but masqueraded as Chinese for much of her life.

  • Anyone knows her address? I would like to visit her if she is still alive. I wish to write a book on her.

  • She still alive, bit she is not easily to meet people.

  • if you want to know more about her, a good book to read is the china lover by ian baruma, also wikipedia

she certainly is an amazing lady.

  • @MrSccheah

She now in Japan, she is Japan Chaplin Association Honarary Advises. In Japan her name is YAMAGUCHI YASUKO.

  • what a great soprano she was,she hit my heart and bring my tears out, each time I listen her voice.

    She is a goddess

  • There have always been questions about Yoshiko Yamaguchi's race or ethnicity. My parents, who are pure Japanese, said she didn't look pure Japanese. I also, when seeing her picture for the first time, didn't realize she was Japanese; and when I questioned my parents, they told me she was a Japanese citizen. That's all. Author Pearl Buck of "The Good Earth," said Yamaguchi was a Eurasian, but I don't know how she knew. One good way to find out is to see pictures of Yamaguchi's parents.

  • @TheMidlakes It doesn't matter what's her race of nationality, but in all she's an adorable soprano.

  • That's why she also had a song about quitting opium. But did the people listen? watch?v=27nRwmiqpEM

Wait... Are you talking about history that came before Lee XiangLan was even conceived? What's this got to do with the woman?

legend, outstanding, exceptionally talented in both Chinese and Japenese songs,

  • She is a pure 100% Japanese, not mixed with Russian. ( Her early age best friend was a russian girl. ) She was born and raised in China and Chinese culture. She is now 89 years old, living in Japan.

  • There is a book called It portrays all of her history.

  • any history of hers? She didn't look like a full blood Chinese...??

  • She is a Japanese,and I heard of her grand-ma is a Russian.

  • thanks!! I would like to know more about her... very interesting... she is pretty. I think she is a mixed.

  • Spy or no spy, her heavenly given voice and her contribution to Chinese music will outlast Mao Tze Tung and will accompany many good hearted listeners for years to come. She will always be remembered by me and many, for her beautiful voice which touch the hearts of many will remains forever.

  • Whatever her nationality is she was born and raised in China. So her thinking and culture was Chinese (maybe Japanese by now). Anyway she had contributed to Shi Dai Qu in a major way. That also is fact which no one will be able to erase!

  • Besides she was allowed to "return" (her first time actually) to Japan. All spies had had the death penalty!!! These are facts and therefore also proof 李香蘭/Li Xiang Lan/Ri Koran/ 山口淑子/Shirley Yamaguchi was no spy.

  • No proof was ever given by Communist Party that she was a spy. So donot judge her by sheer rumour. Communists had done many wrongs to common people as we all know by now.

  • An interesting character. I never believe she was a spy

Having lived the Chinese way all her young adult life, how could she have betrayed the country she's born in? She was manipulated by the Japanese imperialists in making propoganda movies which she was later to apologise for. she also put on record she loves both Japan &China .

The Chinese people should accord respect to this wonderful lady who was a part of their history

  • Ed Sullivan had a popular TV show and had thousands of acts on it. He started on TV in 1948 and it ran for maybe 20 years. In 1964 He was the first one to have the Beatles on TV. My brother was stationed in Japan and brought this record back but I didn't know who the singer was until I read about Her one day. When She started amking movies She was known as RiKoran. So many names.

  • She made a few movies in America in the early 50's known as Shirley Yamaguschi. Oneo of Her best known songs is China Nights. It is on YouTube. Shina No Yoru.

  • Yeah! And she has ever performed on the Broadway stage. She even played the show in the TV Show "Ed Sullivan Show". Did you ever saw her show? I don't know how to search the vedio of the TV show.

  • the friendship between china and japan forever.

i come from Northeast of china(manchuria).

  • What an extraordinary voice. If only there were digital recordings back then.

  • a person who sings well, appreciate the quality of her voice and forget the rest.

  • She worked for her country that's all.

    What's wrong with it?

  • you piece of shit, she didn't want to work for neither Japan or China, she was manipulated by Japanese in order to control Chinese in manchuria!

  • Li Xiang Lan is the only Chinese singer for so long I love best. Her songs touch most inner of my heart. Strange it does not happen with chou xien or other chinese singers.

    Thanks for the posting.

  • She is japanese not chinese.

Her real name is Yoshiko Yamaguchi.

  • It's a very sad song. But it represents the greatness of Chinese ordinary people. The Opium War is the most shameful war (to the side which waged it) in man's history. In the opening of the Olympic Games in China, the developed countries which impudently denounce China as immature or ignoring human rights (especially about Tibet and Wiggle) should watch and listen to this movie. It is you that have been ripping off the Oriental Lion. The beauty of Lǐ Xiānglán is sad.

  • She is 88 years old now.

  • she is alive now??amazing

  • She still alive. Se live in Tokyo.

  • oh that is amzing. i like her so much.

  • Is she still around?

  • Melodic.What a sweet voice

  • The version of this song I've got is different to this. This sounds like a later version, the arrangement is different here and Li's voice sounds more mature. Where did you get hold of this version?

  • This "coloratura" version and the other version were recorded in the same time. The coloratura version was sung in the moive in 1942.This version was embodied in the album that released by EMI in Hong Kong in 2003.

    Thanks watch my viedo!

  • Oh, I found the first cut of this video is a picture of my record that I bought from Shanghai. Hmm, a bit surprised. But it is a kind of honor.

  • could you translate please

  • I heard this coloratura version for the first time. Amazing!

I want to know which gramophone did you use.

  • It's wornderful. Thank you very much. The sound is much better the CD I have. I heard the film still remains, wished to see it someday.
