  • This may sound silly but where exactly is your thumb located on the back of the neck when you're doing the bottom string stretching? Is it located more toward the bottom? Will that prevent excess cramping?

  • 'Flick offs'? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

  • theyre not hammer-ons you morons, theyre called SLURS

  • @THEGUYD0WNTHESTREET don't be mean. it written music notation, slurs is the term. but the technique is called hammering on

  • Youtube recommended it so I watched. Cool vid actually. Reminds me of years gone by. I used the same Gmajor 3 note per string shape. I kept practicing it until I was able to sweep pick the entire scale. Good vid, wished I'd had some instructional crap like this back in the day instead of having to read it and figure it out myself without audio or video.

  • my hand tends to get hard as a rock AHGG damn ...I lack strenght?

  • "sometimes its called pull-off" first time i heard a word flick-off :p

  • lee press ons rule man !!!!! nice job

  • Should i alternate picking when im doing the run with hammerons and pull offs or does it not matter?? cus i get the urge to only do downstrokes..

  • you know it called a pull off , a filck off is when some 1 cuts you off in trafic .....LOL hammerons pull off

  • legato is NOT simply hammers and pull offs...you can do hammers and pull offs and still NOT be doing legato...study Chopin for true legato....

  • @sAK47rament0

Legato just means 'smooth'. There's no such thing as true legato.

  • Dude, really? "Hammer as hard as you can!" ? That is the opposite of what you should do. One part of mastering the guitar is to learn not to use so much strenght in either of your hands. Yes, you should "hammer" on, but not necessarily hard at all.

    Cheers to you all!

  • hahaha they call them flick offs in england?

  • @lgmetallicafan no, no they don't, lol! I've never heard of a flick off until now :P

  • give me thumbs up if you think it sounds funny when he says flick offs.:D

  • I's good technique!!!

  • LOL!!!!He said bitch xD

  • 4:05 thats friggin epic. i can play it but it looks way cooler when you watch it hahaha

  • @biker5211 not really hard but yeah its looks cool :P

  • hammer-op and pull-off is the most common term

  • hey great video... i really needed a lesson like this... now practice as much as mi fingers resist... thanks justinSandercoe

  • suck my :-

  • @baylorjose if you really have a :- im sorry

  • i can never watch this guys videos... he doesnt explain anything and goes of on a rant...

  • fuck you! im not interested with your fucking lesson

  • this has ads? rly?

  • there oull offs not flick offs LOL lmao

  • @satcheljnrshredder ...the "pull offs", not "oull offs"... just kidding :-D

  • fuckin easy ass shit

  • agreed

  • 5:37 - 5:42 he just rubs in your face that he can do it and we can't HAHAH all his lessons are amazing, learning so much with him.. Go Justin!

  • Yeah i've been seeing his lessons, and even though I don't learn many of them, it's like his good playing is contagious and i'm getting infected by it lol.

  • FLICK OFFS!

  • ah go flick off

  • @calebsj haha :L:L:L

  • Keep up the good work

  • I've been playing guitar for years, but flicking off on three notes is really hard for me. I play it like it was the first time I hold a guitar. Hammering on is much easier.

That would be great if you could make a beginner sweeping lesson...

Thanks for your instructive videos !

  • so useful, thanks ;)

  • fuck me friend and i started callin it flick off :D

  • doesnt matter what he calls it......he does it well! Good job justin

  • Oh flick off you bleedin bugger.

  • flick off hahahahahahaha................hahahahaha

  • lol come on man..."flick off"? Don't re-invent the wheel. Good video and nice Fender amp in the back.

  • I think it too so.... ¿ flick off ? ¿ pull off ? whatever... good video, i invite you to check and comment. Regards from spain.

  • 6:17 lol

  • you're fantastic|!!

  • what scales do you recommend for a sweet sounding legato? Locrian?

  • locrians a mode isnt it

  • ye locrian relates to a half diminished chord

  • mixophrygian

  • hahaha :p isn't that in the same family as aeolidian?

  • Yeah, erm, um, so like, what is aeolidian?

  • LOL! @SalandFindles ~ Aeolidian is the imaginary realm between lidian and aeolian modes. :p Just like mixophrygian is the imaginary realm between Mixolydian and phrygian. Neither truly exist to my knowledge, but hey, some new stuff may have been invented.

  • @Wiseman501 lolololol "Lydian" not Lidian, but I guess no one cares xD

zomg oh hey its Wiseman! XD I'd no idea it was you until I typed that XD

Mixolydian is the version of the Lydian mode which is just more suggestive of the major scale. Lydian has a b5, Mixolydian doesnt.

Phrygian is the mode of the Major scale which is suggestive of the Harmonic Minor Scale. Pure and simple.

  • @ShadowLancer128 Hahaha, I know, I was being humorous. I haven't been back to this video for a long while. Mixophrygian, aeolydian... It should be obvious to catch. :p Also must have been a typo on lydian. Hope your music is going well, my man!

  • @Wiseman501

It's going great, really. I've been learning some MAJOR Paul Gilbert licks, and I've got his picking style down pat.

I'm beginning to get his string skipping stuff down.

When I get into my next college next month in January, I'll try to get a band together and upload some original material.

  • @ShadowLancer128 Awesome! Paul's got some insane licks, bro. Keep up the good work and let me know!

  • any scale... major, minor, harmonic minor, Hungarian minor,

  • I'm sorry but it's so f'ing funny when he says flick-off xD I know it's pull-off, and i know it's the same thing but it's so f'ing funny XD ROFL

  • can any one help me.

in one lesson justin said to keep finger movements low as possible to help, but my pinky is a retard, what do i do???

  • Keep practicing and slow down until you can do it perfectly. SLOWLY increase the speed. Don't go any faster than you can go with perfect technique.

  • zakk wild recomends trills with the little finger to build up strength, it helped me out.

  • *Wylde

  • @wayne03051982 me too.

  • @wayne03051982 *wylde* :p

  • You gotto do it slowly man, slownees in the key.

  • flicks offs (: pull offs same thing

  • flick-offs: more commonly referred to as pull-offs in the US. Also, instead of picking the first note on each string, you can also hammer-on that note. It results in a more even tone.

  • you are awesome justin, thank you so much._jake

  • 5:50 is absolute gold, I hope people listen

  • dude that's awsome

  • lol 'coz it will just sound shit' and i swear its a pulloff?

  • those are good warmups even if you already have it down.

  • and remember children:colour NOT color and flick-off NOT pull-off xD xD xD

  • NO. color and pull-off is correct. Fuck that other shit. grr

  • if this video if for fast legato rock technique, and is also the second video in the series, why is he spending so much time defining hammer on's?

  • Comment removed

  • hey duface a flick off uses only the midle finger a pulloff is and finger on the guitar .lolol

  • why does it call pull-offs flick-offs?

  • maybe... just maybe.. im not sure so dont hold me to this... could it be ?.. that you have to hammer you finger onto the fretboard then flick off your finger ... maybe im not sure as i say... ^o)

  • but they arent called flickoffs they're called pull offs

  • hes australian so he obviously says it diffrently

  • if you understand what he's meaning then what's so important about the word...

  • it?!

  • changing between the third and second strings is the bit that always seems to fvck me up

  • Comment removed

  • Did you even watch the video? ...

  • noi didnt i watched the kristopher dahl one and he didntexplain it well so i just had a question so i asked it on this video but now i know.

    Ps, Your a dickface

  • You're a fucking retard, why would you watch another video and then ask a question in a completely different one and not even watching the video in the second one which explains what legato is, fucking retard

  • i asked a quesion on another video because no one was answering questions on the other video you ignominous fag.You cock fucking bitch as motherfucker.

  • Yes! THE DARK SIIIIDE! USE YOUR SUPPRESSED RAGE ! USE IT!

  • ahh your funny

  • legto is the style of using hammer ons and pull offs. Eric Clapton would be a legato style player, using triplets often. Eric johnson is the other way around. He plays almost every note instead of using hammer ons and pull offs.

  • Flicking brilliant video Justin!

  • Flick off

  • I have a dilemma

    in the pull offs

on ther moment I use the little finger to start the flick offs

should I already have my index finger pressing on the string

if you do so it feels like you are making to much effort and you cant go any faster

  • It should burn.... because that means that your getting stronger in your fingers..

  • i think so because you would have to have your fingers in place to do this at higher speeds.

  • Good video but I disagree where you say you hammer down 'really hard'. The motion shouldnt be of your finger hammering down really hard. The motion should be using as little tension as possible but moving the finger sharply onto the string to sound it as loud as the previous note.Hammering down as hard as you can will limit your speed and possible lead to RSI or other pains

  • Joe Satriani says not to hammer down *hard*, but to hammer down *fast*. It's much easier in the long run.

  • lol its called pullofs

  • yea but hes british so, W/e

Flick-offs are more correct for the motion, you dont want to pull the string.

  • We say pull offs in Britain not Flick offs.

  • well he is australian so stop moaning. jesus

  • by pull-off it refers to your finger lol but yeah flick-off is a more correct way for the motion.

  • ya and that is another way to do it too, by flicking the string.

  • muchas gracias de guayaqil te saludo

  • thanx justin..you fuckin ruleeee yehhhhhhh!!!"£$%

  • Thanks dude, that was a really good lesson. You give the music a relaxed feeling, which many may forget while practicing ;)

  • How do you do the pull off so that it sounds loud and clear enough withouth touching the adjacent strings? Im really having trouble with that.

  • If you mute the other strings with your 1st finger, then it won't matter if you bump them. But it also just takes practice to be able to do pulls so they sound loud without moving your finger too much. You might even try just doing a hammer/pull with one finger, back and forth until you get the hang of it. Then do that with each finger so you build up strength/dexterity evenly.

  • loved the end bit ... it will just sound shit. LOL this guy fuckin rules i love him =]

  • Kinda like buying the first note and getting the second two notes FREE. ;)

  • you are crazy good job man

  • Thanks bro!

  • you D man!!!

  • oh sweet ive been looking for a nice beginner exercise legato lick

    tyvm

  • My God... don't know if you're joking... by the way for those who don't know: he's simply playing Major G or Ionian notes - it's not exactly the G scale as he doesn't stop exactly on the octave, it's just the form of G major/ G ionian -. E natural minor has the same note of G ionian NOT mixolidian - like A dorian, B phrigian, C lydian... - . G mixolidian has the same notes of C ionian and it's like a major scale but with seventh grade minor.

  • please teach me scale theory God. I don't know anything about scale theory and i really need to. i mean even a starting point would help.

  • He's playing G mixolydian which is the natural minor of E Aeolian

  • actually i think its just a normal G major scale... if he was just letting the E sting ring to set the root while playing what looks like a g scale wouldn't that make it Em aeolian? because as is he was starting and ending on G and was using what looked like a major shape scale (3notes per string)I don't think im wrong but uh...I totally can be so...please let me know I would like that very much

  • G major is a parallel scale with E minor or aeolian mode so yes that's true!

But it isn't Em aeolian it's either Em or E Aeolian mode! ;)

  • it can help... tnx

  • It really doesn't matter at all what the heck he calls them, As long as you understand what he means.

  • no it's not its just his way of calling it becuz he believes "it's more of a flicking action."

  • it's the same

  • maneirooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo translate

    cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • aww i want a bike riding lesson^^ cool vid

  • you explain it really well thanx!

  • Have u been knighted yet? Sir Justin Sandercoe has a nice ring to it :-)

  • tks justin i was looking for a lesson like this for a long time , i rly like how you explain things slowly at the start :) that way we can rly see whats going on there , tks

    keep it going

  • "it will just sound shit"

    quote of the year

  • Thanks for the lesson.

  • hahah flick-off's, thats new :P

  • Get over it

  • i thnk british ppl

    call it flick off..

  • No its just that begginers think "pull off" and all they try to do is just lift the finger up and expect for a note to be played. You have to "flick it" in order to do a mini strum with your finger to make the note be heard.

  • ohh i see

  • Fuck off

  • hahaha nice

  • try to see my legato videos, im playing only from a years! wat do u think!!! enjoy!!!!

  • is it amp settings that make that pull off sound or just the rough fingers? Cuz when I hammer on and pull off it's so quiet

  • yeah same :S

  • Alot of distortion helps with this but a lot of it is finger strength and smoothness.

  • yeah man the best way to master legato is with a clean tone, thats what im concentrating on

  • Oh really? thanks for the tip dude ill give it a try.

  • i practice with a distorted tone, because i find it harder to keep notes/noise ringing, and learning to mute perfectly is a art form almost =p

  • yes it sounds better and its easier but your depending on the distortion rather than technique

  • The funny thing with legato is that it's so damn easy to play clean and fast. The bad thing is that it doesn't sound as fast as it really is.. :P

Well, easy and good lesson for beginners. Pretty sweet. 5*****.

  • Thats the hard part..... to make it sound as fast as it really is.... its not easy to master but very easy to learn. Also it is very difficult to mute the strings. But this guy is an ace, man. And his legato is as agressive as fast picking. His legato sounds as fast as it really is.....

  • yea he's good.

but i don't think its very difficult to mute the strings.

  • I dont mean the cross handed style , muting with the free fingers of the right hand is hard, like joe satriani does.....

  • These lessons are really good. Its nice to know there are some people out there who aren't interested in making money for teaching the things they love to do.

  • what does he do to stop the sounding of the other strings he hits when he does flick offs?? and still play it so fast

  • Notice when he goes to the next string, his first finger is still touching the last string he played, so that it gets muted. It takes some practice, because you need to touch the string, but not fret it.

  • but damn the move from the g to the b string is a royal bitch!!

  • lol straight up why are all these idiots arguing over some minor technicality? flick off pull off either way this is a good lesson.
