My grandfather mined coal for decades in McRoberts KY where my Daddy was born. I'm sick of these right wing bastards sayin' they're fighting for America when they never broke a sweat a day of their lives. Roosevelt did more for the working class in this country than any president ever did. God Bless the working class of this country.
I am from Corbin which is pretty close to Harlan and it a beautiful place. I live in Louisville now because I couldn't make it bad there (no jobs) but I love to ride back there in the summer.
I am from Oregon and Washington and have lived in eastern Tennessee and western Kentucky. I found the people to be quite hospitable and friendly. It is unfortunate that many of such good people live in poverty.
I grew up in this and left and took the pain with me! I make a good living now knowing I am stronger.. for growing up with nothing but knowledge and what my family could teach me about living off the land . I thank God everyday I know what I know because I will never be without!

This is a beautiful song, and I appreciate the time and effort put into making this video. A lot of those photos could have been of my own ancestors. I am from eastern KY, my grandfather, mother, uncles and cousins have been coal miners.

Born and raised in the Cumberland mountains(TN side). It may be hard, but I try to look at the good in everything. The up side is how beautiful our home is, and its secluded enough to keep its natural beauty. Plus the city folks and yankees stay away lol.
i live i Eastern KY and my daddy made it out of Harlan alive but my Uncle didn't. Not our fault what happened in Virgina and WE do feel soooo sorry for all the loss.
I hate to say so but she is from kentucky and so am i . this song is about kentucky.its about eastern kentucky coal mines. it is not about west virginia
@archerdog1 The video isn't about West Virginia. It's about eastern Kentucky and north-eastern Tennessee. Maybe you should read the description in detail before you leave a comment next time.
my whole familys in kentucky, lots of em live in crummies and cawood, sure is pretty over there, sure does have nice air over there, didnt know there would be a song about harlan since its such a smalle town, but it sure is poor
Brings back memories. Great video and song. Patty is superb. Recall very well my mother complaining that the sun didn't shine long enough to dry the clothes she hung on the line. Thanks for this.
I'm so proud to have been born and brought up in Harlan County, Ky. A place where "plain talk is easily understood and people say what they mean and mean what they say!"
@shirleymcknight15 Harlan Hi friend! I'm from Argentina and through having seen the series "Justified" not only enjoy it, its history, but also is in love with me what is your city, its tradition and history, would be an honor for me to make a friendship you know even more to their culture and way of life, I admire his people for the sake of his land to his patriotic signs, you can contact me through e-mail God bless you
This is a great video and song. My school does service trips during spring break to the Appalachia region and it always touches my heart to meet these people who have lived such tough lives yet are so willing to help and welcome others. I was in Grundy, VA this past March and will be spending the week in Johnson City, TN this upcoming March.
Great video. I really enjoyed the pics too. I live in NE Ohio but my family came from eastern KY. I got to see the mine where my Papaw was crushed in Wheelwright, KY this year for the first time ever. Very moving. Unbelievable how some people have to live down there. Never met nicer people though.

just wanted to say piece of child hood memory as i far bak as i can remember all my great's grandfathers down to my grandfather work in coal mines and they all died of BLACK LUNGS cause thy had to make a living for there family and etc and this song here bring back sad painful memories but i will always cherish them in my heart and mind for ever
Both sides of my family came out ot the coal fields of Kentucky. The men worked themselves to death under the control of the bosses. The women had a child every two years and died in poverty. My Gr. Grandpa started working the mines when he was 10 yrs. old; Thirty years later, when he was killed in the mines, his wife and children were evicted from their house in the coal camp. Sheriff J.H. Blair and the coal bosses will stand before this family and many others in the judgment.
Excellent video! I love this version of this song best, and coupled with these photos makes it even more touching. I never have been able to figure out how the part of the US that is richest in nature's beauty is so poor economically. It's really sad how hard these good people work to have nothing.
I served as a missionary in Leslie county KY, through the RedBird Mission, I was appalled at the poverty in this area. The one important thing that I've noticed about the people is that regardless of how miserable life is in the mountains, they love living there. Many want better things in life, but have no desire to leave the mountains that they love so dear. My goal is to go back there to live and serve those blessed people.
I've grown up my entire life life in central Kentucky, all my family is from eastern Kentucky and I grew up going down to the mountains to see my great grandparents. Coal and Appalachia are in my blood, people that arent from here will never understand the culture that surrounds the area, hell people from central kentucky really dont get it unless their kin is from the mountains. Bless the families dont pity them.
Its not really like that anymore. I worked underground and i love it. Was layed off twice and been liveing on 7.25 a hour and Iv have a job lined up working underground again. If you havent ever worked underground then you wouldnt understand. Its in my blood, had a chance to go to collage but im not, my sister is gonna be a doctor but id rather work everyday love going to work than go to work and hate it.
My husbands family lived in the hills of South West Virginia and his family lived the life of coal miners and his parents moved heaven and earth to shake that coal dust off of them but they took it with them to their graves.Wanda & James Cole your journey was not forgotten.
My daughter sings this song. She learned it from Brad Paisley's version. Patty is pure, so is Ginny McAfee. Give her a rating and listen. You won't be disappointed.
Give's me chill's. I barely remember my Grandpa, he died of black lung in 69 and never left Harlen alive. I probably went there once when I was 5. My Grandma moved back near her family in NC and almost lived to 100, died 3 weeks after 99 birthday, outlived 12 of 15 kids...Could she tell stories.
This sort of thing is not limited to the mid southern states mountains. The southern tier of New York is just like this. There are no jobs. Nothing to do but milk cows or drive a long way from home for work. The state has taxed the small family farms out of existance and now the bigger corporate farms (2000+ cows) only want to hire illegal mexicans because they work for next to nothing and can't complain. Go to Allegany county NY and you'd think you were in Harlan or Rabun Ga. Gov't doesn't care
@beserkr29 I've seen it up there too, the Adirondacks are just the same. To say that you are left to rot is only half true really, they haven't forgotten you completely. They have you set up like a patient on a feeding tube except they aren't delivering nutrients to you, they are sucking you dry. I for one would love to see Albany and everything below it separated from the rest of us. We seem to have no voice anyway. WESTERN NEW YORK- THE 51st STATE !!! Hang in there beserkr, it's not a dream...
Sadly, tent cities are popping up all over the US. Before long many will face their own special Harlans. What's happened to this nation is a disgrace and both parties are a disgrace.
I am an African American living in NY. I have heard from here and there about the Appalachians and its all negative. To see the conditions that people live through makes NY inner city life look like a paradise.
This is truly shameful. You wont find me making any Appalachian jokes - not that I actually did before. I hope you get out of Harlan Alive
I just left NY after living in Brooklyn for more than 3 years. I'm back in the hills now. I couldn't find a job there. so I didn't have a choice. Now I work in fast food and go to college. This gives me hope so that my kids don't have to suffer like I did.
I really appreciate your comment. I've always believed that you shouldn't criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. You know we all come from divergent backgrounds with many different experiences, but in the end we're all flesh and blood people irregardless of color, nationality, or whatever.
I'm a working class person living in Appalachia and these kinds of conditions shouldn't exist here in America or anywhere for that fact.
